  • In this study, the leaflet motion of a mechanical heart valve and the characteristics of two-dimensional transient blood flow in an elastic blood vessel have been numerically investigated by using fluid-structure interaction method. Here, blood has been assumed as a Newtonian, incompressible fluid. Pressure profiles have been used as boundary conditions at the ventricle and the aorta. As a result, closing motion of the leaflet is faster than opening one. While opening angles of leaflet grow up, vortex is detected at the sinus and backward of the leaflets. When the leaflet is fully closed, vortex is detected at the ventricle and at that moment maximum displacement of the elastic blood vessel is observed in the vicinity of the sinus region. Maximum displacement is caused in association with the blood flow that is oriented toward the elastic blood vessel.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present essential numerical data of FCV(Flow rate Control Valve) which is used in a projectile ejection system for a underwater vehicle. A commercial CFD code is applied to analyze the 3 dimensional viscous compressible flow field within the FCV as four cases of opening rate, 25, 50, 75, and $100\%$. The flow coefficient of each cases are mainly calculated. And other characteristics such as the location of shock wave and total temperature distribution are also determined.

  • In this paper, the mathematical model of the underwater discharge system using a linear pump is derived and the suitable opening pattern of a flow control valve which satisfies the discharge performance requirements is obtained through the underwater discharge simulations. The simulation results show that the dynamic characteristics of a projectile are greatly affected by the opening pattern of the flow control valve, however, hardly by the diving depth. It is anticipated that the simulation model can be used to derive the design parameters and analyze the performance of the designed underwater discharge system using a linear pump.

  • A simulation model has been developed to predict the performance of 5-valve gasoline engine by gas exchange process with combustion model. In this study, we simulated the intake flow characteristics and performance of 5-valve engine with entwine speed and we compared the 5-valve engine performance with that of 4-valve engine. As a result. the calculated value was in consistency with the measured value relatively. The performance of 5-valve engine was higher than that of 4-valve engine in high engine speed region.

  • Recently, a semi-active shock absorber has been taking interest because of its low cost and simple structure than the active one. CFD analysis has been conducted to investigate the continuous and variable damping characteristics of the semi-active shock absorber. Also, the flow resistance characteristics of a spool valve has been examined to identify individual parameters(namely, exponent and discharge coefficient) of pressure-flow rate relation needed for the accurate valve modeling. The flow field in the damping valve was simulated using the commercial code, CFX-5.3. The numerical results showed reasonable agreement with the experimental outputs. The pressure distribution with the variation of spool opening length and volume flow rate were discussed in detail. And the continuous and variable damping performance was found clearly. The individual parameters of spool valve were obtained as a function of orifice area. The exponent and discharge coefficient were fitted in with the first and the third polynomial respectively.

  • The present study investigated design parameters of shunt valves and anti-siphon device used to treat patients with hydrocephalus. The shunt valve controls drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through passive deflection of a thin and small diaphragm. The anti-siphon device(ASD) is optionally connected to the valve to prevent overdrainage when the patients are in the standing position. The major design parameters influencing pressure-flow characteristics of the shunt valve were analyzed using ANSYS structural program. Experiments were performed on the commercially available valves and showed good agreements with the computer simulation. The results of the study indicated that predeflection of the shunt valve diaphragm is an important design parameter to determine the opening pressure of the valve. The predeflection was found to depend on the diaphragm tip height and could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness and its elastic modulus. The major design parameters of the ASD were found to be the clearance (gap height) between the thin diaphragm and the flow orifice. Besides the gap height, the opening pressure of the ASD could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness, its elastic modulus, area ratio of the diaphragm to the flow orifice. Based on the numerical simulation which considered the increased subcutaneous pressure introduced by the tissue capsule pressure on the implanted shunt valve system, optimum design parameters were proposed for the ASD.

  • Fuel shutoff valve of a combustion chamber controls propellant mass flowrate of a rocket engine, by using pilot pressure and spring force. The developing fuel shutoff valve can be self sustained even though pilot pressure is removed in an actuator. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the characteristics of the forces with respect to the opening and closing of the valve in order to evaluate its performance. In light of this, the valve has been designed to adjust the control pressure for the opening of the poppet and to determine the working fluid pressure at which the valve starts to close. This paper also has been predicted flow coefficient of the valve by Fluent(ver. 12.0) CFD analysis. Various results from the prediction and the analysis have been compared with experiments.

  • In order to develop two-stroke free-piston hydrogen engine to obtain high thermal efficiency and low emission, backfire occurrence have to be prevented. In this research, backfire characteristics are analyzed as functions of the intake valve opening timing and compression chamber pressure under piston by using RICEM (Rapid Intake Compression Expansion Machine) that has reverse uni-flow scavenging. As the result, reverse uni-flow scavenging is advantage about back fire. but, it exists suitable intake valve opening timing and its timing become known that equivalence ratio 1 retard until the piston rises. Also, To rise chamber pressure of lower piston, this does not cause backfire occurs in equivalent ratio 0.6 observed back fire. Therefore, 2cycle hydrogen fueled free-piston engine is undesirable scavenging compression by compressing the piston.

  • It is essential for the valid design of a marine flow-control valve to exactly know its flow characteristics. The present study has numerically investigated the flow characteristics inside a marine throttle-type globe valve using a kind of commercial CFD code, CFX10.0, with an adoption of the SST (Shear-Stress Transport) turbulence model. To validate the numerical approach, the flow coefficients are compared with the experimental ones. Results show that the globe valve is effective in the control of flow rate according to the opening ratio in case of the forward-direction flow, whereas it is effective in the flow shutoff in case of the reverse-direction flow. Around the inlet of the valve, a recirculation region is formed due to the blunt body shape, the turbulence intensity becomes strengthened and then an abrupt pressure loss occurs.
