Improved Physical Properties of Ni-doped $BiFeO_3$ Ceramic

  • Recently, multiferroic materials have attracted much attention due to their fascinating fundamental physical properties and potential technological applications in magnetic/ferroelectric data storage systems, quantum electromagnets, spintronics, and sensor devices. Among single-phase multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3$, in particular, has received considerable attention because of its very interesting magnetoelectric properties for application to spintronics. Enhanced ferromagnetism was found by Fe-site ion substitution with magnetic ions. In this study, $BiFe_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$ (x=0 and 0.05) bulk ceramic compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering. High-purity $Bi_2O_3$, $Fe_3O_4$ and NiO powders were mixed with the stoichiometric proportions, and calcined at $450^{\circ}C$ for 24 h to produce $BiFe_{1-x}Ni_xO_3$. Then, the samples were directly put into the oven, which was heated up to $800^{\circ}C$ and sintered in air for 20 min. The crystalline structure of samples was investigated at room temperature by using a Rigaku Miniflex powder diffractometer. The Raman measurements were carried out with a Raman spectrometer with 514.5-nm-excitation Ar+-laser source under air ambient condition on a focused area of $1-{\mu}m$ diameter. The field-dependent magnetization and the temperature-dependent magnetization measurements were performed with a vibrating-sample magnetometer. The x-ray diffraction study demonstrates the compressive stress due to Ni substitution at the Fe site. $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ exhibits the rhombohedral perovskite structure R3c, similar to $BiFeO_3$. The lattice constant of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ is smaller than of $BiFeO_3$ because of the smaller ionic radius of Ni3+ than that of Fe3+. The field-dependent magnetization of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ exhibits a clear hysteresis loop at 300 K. The magnetic properties of $BiFe_{0.95}Ni_{0.05}O_3$ were improved at room temperature because of the existence of structurally compressive stress.

  • 본 연구에서는 고체산화물연료전지에서 사용되고 있는 전해질의 직접탄소연료전지로의 적용가능성을 평가하기 위해 YSZ 전해질의 특성을 평가하였다. 전해질 층은 진공 슬러리 코팅 법을 사용하여 연료극 지지체위에 형성하였으며, 코팅 후 $1,400^{\circ}C$에서 5시간 동안 열처리하여 미세조직, 가스투과도 및 이온 전도도 측정을 통해 직접탄소연료전지로의 적용가능성을 확인하였다. YSZ 전해질은 얇고 치밀한 층을 형성하였으며 낮은 가스 투과도 값을 나타내었다. 이와같은 결과를 바탕으로 직접탄소 연료전지에 YSZ 전해질을 적용하였으며, 단위전지를 제작하여 $800^{\circ}C$에서 성능평가를 수행하였다.

  • 최근에 고효율의 형광체를 개발하고자 무기물 모체에 주입된 희토류 이온의 발광에 대한 연구가 급부상하고 있다. 형광체는 고휘도, 넓은 시청 각도와 저 비용으로 인하여 대형 평판 디스플레이 분야로 그 응용성을 확장하는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 제작에 있어서 매우 중요한 물질이다. 현재 적색 형광체로 널리 사용되고 있는 발광 물질은 YBO3:Eu3+ 혹은 (Y,Gd)BO3:Eu3+ 형광체이지만, Eu3+ 이온이 중심대칭의 자리에 위치하기 때문에, Eu3+ 이온의 5D07F1 전이에 의한 주황색의 발광 세기가 5D07F2 전이에 의한 적색의 세기보다 강하여 고품질의 색상을 구현하는데 상당한 어려움이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 새로운 모체 격자를 갖는 적색, 녹색, 청색 형광체 개발에 많은 노력이 집중되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 형광체 합성시 중요한 변수의 하나인 소결 온도가 새로운 다양한 색을 방출하는 형광체 분말 CaSiO4:RE3+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ce)의 특성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. CaSiO4:RE3+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ce) 형광체 분말 시료는 초기 물질 CaO (99.99%), SiO2 (99.99%), Eu2O3 (99.99%), Sm2O3 (99.9%), Tb4O7 (99.9%), Dy2O3 (99.9%), CeO2 (99.9%)을 화학적량으로 준비하였다. 볼밀, 건조 작업을 한 후에, 시료를 막자사발에 넣고 분쇄하여 3시간의 하소 공정과 5시간의 소결 공정을 수행하였다. 이때 소결 온도를 변수로 선택하여 각각 $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, $1,000^{\circ}C$, $1,100^{\circ}C$에서 소결 작업을 수행하여 합성 분말의 구조, 표면, 광학적 특성을 측정하여 소결 온도가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. Eu3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체 분말의 경우에, 발광 스펙트럼은 597, 618, 655, 707 nm에서 관측되었으며, 소결 온도가 $800^{\circ}C$에서 $1,100^{\circ}C$로 증가함에 따라 모든 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 순차적으로 증가함을 나타내었다. Tb3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체 분말의 경우에 관측된 발광 스펙트럼은 주 피크인 549 nm를 중심으로 하여 세기가 상대적으로 작은 493, 592, 626 nm의 피크들이 관측되었으며, 소결 온도가 증가함에 따라 전반적으로 발광 세기들이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. Sm3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체의 경우에, 발광 스펙트럼은 전형적인 Sm3+이온에 의한 전이 신호들이 605, 570, 653 nm에서 나타났다. 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 소결 온도에 비례하여 증가하였다. Ce3+가 도핑된 경우에 발광 스펙트럼은 소결 온도에 관계없이 401 nm에서 관측되었으며, 소결 온도에 따라 발광 세기의 변화가 나타났다. 이 실험 결과로 부터, 합성시 적절한 소결 온도의 선택이 고발광 효율의 형광체를 제작하는데 있어서 매우 중요한 요소가 됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

기계적 합금화된 Al-8wt% Fe분말의 고온 변형거동 (The High Temperature Deformation Behavior of Mechanically)

  • 기계적 합금화 방법으로 제조된 A-8wt%Fe합금분말의 진공고온 소결거동을 분석하였고 이 소결체의 고온변형거동을 연구하기 위하여 35$0^{\circ}C$-45$0^{\circ}C$의 온도 범위에서 여러 변형률속도로 압축 시험을 수행하였다. 또한 이 소결체의 열적안정성을 조사하기 위하여 30$0^{\circ}C$-50$0^{\circ}C$온도 범위에서 각각 60시간 동안 열처리한 후 경도시험을 수행하였다. 압축응력은 변형률이 증가함에 따라 급격히 증가하여 변형률 약 3%에서 최대응력에 이르렀으며, 최대응력 이후 다소 연화현상을 보인 후 유동응력은 가공경화돠 동적 재결정의 평형률 30%까지 일정하였다. 또한 60시간 열처리에 따른 소결시편의 경도는 40$0^{\circ}C$에서 부터 급격히 감소하였다.

Pool boiling heat transfer of a copper microporous coating in borated water

  • Pool boiling heat transfer of a copper microporous coating was experimentally studied in borated water with a concentration of boric acid from 0.0 to 5.0 vol percent (vol%) to determine the effect of boric acid on boiling heat transfer in water. A high-temperature, thermally conductive microporous coating (HTCMC) was created by sintering copper powder with an average particle size of 67 ㎛ onto a 1 cm × 1 cm plain copper surface with a coating thickness of ~300 ㎛ within a furnace in a vacuum environment. The tests showed that the nucleate boiling heat transfer coefficient (NBHT) of HTCMC became slightly less enhanced as the concentration of boric acid increased but the NBHT coefficient values were still significantly higher than those of the plain surface. The critical heat flux (CHF) values from 0 to 1.0 vol% were maintained at ~2,000 kW/㎡, and then, they gradually decreased down to ~1,700 kW/㎡ as the concentration increased further to 5.0 vol%. It is believed that the micro-scale pores of the HTCMC were partially blocked by the high boric acid concentration during the nucleate boiling such that the small bubbles were not effectively created using the HTCMC reentrant cavities as the boric acid concentration increased.

금속분말 강화수지를 이용한 쾌속금형 제작 (Rapid Tooling by Using Metal Powder Reinforced Resin)

  • As dies and molds have become more and more complicated in the recent years, the demand for lower cost and shorter production time is also growing stronger. Rapid prototyping and Tooling technologies are expected to be used for more rapid and lower cost tool fabrication. However the rapid tooling methods have not yet reached the level of application to the manufacturing of metallic dies and molds which require high dimensional accuracy. As the rapid tooling technology, there are the slurry casting, the powder casting, the direct laser sintering, and so on. Generally, in the slurry casting, the alumina powder and the water soluble phenol were mainly used. However, the mechanical properties of the phenol were not good enough to apply to molds directly. In this study, pure epoxy and two types of aluminium powder reinforced resin are applied to the slurry casting. The mechanical and thermal properties are better than phenol because the epoxy is the thermosetting resin. And mechanical characteristics such as shrinkage rate, hardness, surface roughness are measured for the sake of comparison. Metal powder reinforced resin molds are better than the resin tool form the viewpoint of shrinkage rate and hardness. Finally, it has been shown that the application possibility of this process is high, because the manufacturing time and cost savings are significant.

탄소섬유 배열이 LSI Cf-Si-SiC 복합체의 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Carbon Fiber Arrangement on Properties of LSI Cf-Si-SiC Composites)

  • Carbon fiber fabric-silicon carbide composites were fabricated by liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) process. The porous two-dimensional carbon fiber fabric performs were prepared by 13 plies of 2D-plain-weave fabric in a three laminating method, [0/90], [${\pm}45$], [$0/90/{\pm}45$] lay-up, respectively. Before laminating, a thin pyrolytic carbon (PyC) layer deposited on the surface of 2D-plain weave fabric sheets as interfacial layer with $C_3H_8$ and $N_2$ gas at $900^{\circ}C$. A densification of the preforms for $C_f-Si-SiC$ matrix composite was achieved according to the LSI process at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in vacuum atmosphere. The bending strength of the each composite were measured and the microstructural consideration was performed by a FE-SEM.

고온 집진용 Fail Safety 소결 필터의 통기도와 분진제거 특성 (The Properties of Permeability and Ash-Removal of Sintered Fail Safety Filter of Dust Collector in High Temperature)

  • The fail safety filter is an assistant filter element to be mounted in order to intercept the particles leaked when the main filter elements are broken. So it should have two contrary functions of being plugged easily to meet the purpose of dust sealing and a high permeability to save the space. The permeability of the metal filter elements were effectively controlled by the following factor: powder size(53-840 ${\mu}m$) and applied pressure(1000-2000 $kgf/cm^2$), and then the compact were sintered for 1 hour at $1200^{\circ}C$ in vacuum sintering furnace. The sintered metal filters was evaluated for the function of the fail safety filter in an experimental unit. The maximum allowable particle size was 420-840 ${\mu}m$, when a CIP pressure of 1500 $kgf/cm^2$ was applied reveals a permeability of about $1.2{\times}10^{10}m^2$ and pore size of about 60 ${\mu}m$. The metal filter produced with stainless steel powder of 480-840 ${\mu}m$ size, which presented excellent permeability than commercial ceramic filter element and plugged with in 3 minutes with the leak of the maximum particle size less than 3 ${\mu}m$.

  • In an attempt to enhance phase transformation and homogenization of Mn-doped $FeSi_2$, mechanical alloying of elemental powders was applied. Cold pressing and sintering in vacuum were carried out to produce a dense microstructure, and then isothermal annealing was employed to induce a phase transformation to the $\beta$-$FeSi_2$semiconductor. Phase transitions in this alloy system during the process were investigated by using XRD, EDS and SEM. As-milled powders after 100 h of milling were shown to be metastable state. As-sintered iron silicides consisted of untransformed mixture of $\alpha$-$Fe_2$$Si_{5}$and $\varepsilon$-FeSi phases. $\beta$-$FeSi_2$phase transformation was induced by subsequent isothermal annealing at $830^{\circ}C$, and near single phase of $\beta$-$FeSi_2$was obtained after 24 h of annealing. Thermoelectric properties in terms of Seebeck coefficient, and electrical conductivity were evaluated and correlated with phase transformation. Seebeck coefficient electrical resistivity and hardness increased with increasing annealing time due to $\beta$ phase transformation.

Ni-MH 2차전지용 AB5계 수소저장합금의 소결에 따른 전극 특성 (The Electrode Characteristics of the Sintered AB5-type Metal Hydrogen Storage Alloy for Ni-MH Secondary Battery)

  • The AB5-type metal hydride electrodes using $(LM)Ni_{4.49}Co_{0.1}Mn_{0.205}Al_{0.205}$(LM : Lanthaniumrich Mischmetal) alloy powders(${\leq}200$mesh) which were coated with 25wt% copper in an acidic bath were prepared with or without addition of 10wt% PTFE as a binder. Prior to electrochemical measurements, the electrodes were sintered at $40^{\circ}C$ for 1 and 2hrs in vacuum with Mm(mischmetal) and sponge type Ti getters. The properties such as maximum capacity, cycle life and mechanical strength of the negative electrode have been investigated. The surface analysis of the electrode was also obtained before and after charge-discharge cycling using scanning electron microscope(SEM). From the observations of electrochemical behavior, it was found that the sintered electrode shows a lower maximum discharge capacity compared with non-sintered electrode but it shows a better cycle life. For the both electrodes with or without addition of PTFE binder, the values of mechanical strength were obtained, and their values increased with increasing sintering time. However, there is little difference of discharge capacity for both electrodes.
