There has been an explosive development of nanocrystal (NC) synthesis and application due to their composition-dependent specific properties. Despite the composition, shape, and size of NCs foremost determine their physicochemical properties, the surface state and molecule conjugation also drastically change their characteristics. To make practical use of NCs, it is a prerequisite to understand the NC surface state and the degree to which they have been modified because the reaction occurs on the interface between the NCs and the surrounding medium. We report in here an analysis method to identify conjugated ligands and their binding states on semiconductor nanocrystals based on their molecular information. Surface science techniques, such as time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and FT-IR spectroscopy, are adopted based on the micro-aggregated sampling method. Typical trioctylphosphine oxide-based synthesis methods of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) have been criticized because of the peculiar effects of impurities on the synthesis processes. Since the ToF-SIMS technique provides molecular composition evidence on the existence of certain ligands, we were able to clearly identify the n-octylphosphonic acid (OPA) as a surface ligand on CdSe/ZnS QDs. Furthermore, the complementary use of the ToF-SIMS technique with the FT-IR technique could reveals the OPA ligands' binding state as bidentate complexes.

Graphene, as a single layer of $sp^2$-bonded carbon atoms packed into a 2D honeycomb crystal lattice, has attracted much attention due to its outstanding properties such as high carrier mobility, chemical stability, and optical transparency. In order to synthesize high quality graphene, transition metals, such as nickel and copper, have been widely employed as catalysts, which need transfer to desired substrates for various applications. However, the transfer steps inevitably induce defects, impurities, wrinkles, and cracks of graphene. Here, we report a facile transfer-free graphene synthesis method through nickel and carbon co-deposited layer, which does not require separately deposited catalytic nickel and carbon source layers. The 100 nm NiC layer was deposited on the top of $SiO_2/Si$ substrates by nickel and carbon co-deposition. When the sample was annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$, the carbon atoms diffused through the NiC layer and deposited on both sides of the layer to form graphene upon cooling. The remained NiC layer was removed by using nickel etchant, and graphene was then directly obtained on $SiO_2/Si$ without any transfer process. Raman spectroscopy was carried out to confirm the quality of resulted graphene layer. Raman spectra revealed that the resulted graphene was at high quality with low degree of $sp^3$-type structural defects. Furthermore, the Raman analysis results also demonstrated that gas flow ratio (Ar : $CH_4$) during the NiC deposition and annealing temperature significantly influence not only the number of graphene layers but also structural defects. This facile non-transfer process would consequently facilitate the future graphene research and industrial applications.
MIRIS is the main payload of the Science and Technology Satellite-3 (STSAT-3). which is being developed by KASI for infrared survey observation of the Galactic plane at Paschen alpha wavelength. Wideband filters in I and H band will also be used to observe cosmic infrared background. The MIRIS will perform astronomical observations in the near-infrared wavelengths of 0.9~2 ${\mu}m$ using a 256 ${\times}$ 256 Teledyne PICNIC FPA sensor providing a 3.67 ${\times}$ 3.67 degree field of view with a pixel scale of 51.6 arcsec. The flight model of the MIRIS has been recently developed, The system performance tests have been made in the laboratory, including opto-mechanics test, vibration test, thermal vacuum test and passive cooling test down to 200K, using a thermally controlled vacuum chamber. Several focus tests showed good agreements compared to initial design parameters. Recent efforts are being concentrated to improve the system performances, particularly to reduce readout noise level in electronics. After assembly and integration into the satellite bus, the MIRIS will be launched in 2012.

Injection-compression molding was used for film insert molding of an automotive door grip using films with three-dimensional embossed patterns. A vacuum mold was fabricated for vacuum-assisted thermoforming of the film, and an injection-compression mold was developed for film insert molding. Three pressure transducers were installed inside the mold cavity to measure cavity pressures. Injection-compression molding experiments under various compression strokes and toggle speeds were performed to investigate their effects on the cavity pressure and heights of the embossed patterns. The compression stroke of 0.9mm and low toggle speed resulted in a higher degree of conservation of embossed patterns. Additionally, the processing conditions for the maximum heights of embossed patterns were almost similar to those for minimum integral value of cavity pressures. The injection-compression molding process presents the opportunity to impart a soft-touch feeling of plastic parts printed with embossed patterns.
We have studied the phase separation and ordering phenomeon of InAlAs epilayers grown on InP substrate by LP-MOCVD with DCXRD, PL, and TEM. From the intensity and FWHM of DCXRD and PL, we observed that the structural and optical quality of InAlAs epilayers were improved as growth temperature increased. The band-gap reduction due to phase separation and ordering is 291, 246, and 28 meV in the InAlAs epilayers grown at $565^{\circ}C$, $615^{\circ}C$, and $700^{\circ}C$, respectively, and shows the same from the InAlAs epilayer town at 5$65^{\circ}C$ in which the HRTEM micrograph showed the lattice fringe between InAs-rich and AlAs-rich regions was tilted by $2^{\circ}$ due to composition difference. However the maximum degree of ordering by intensity of extra spots was obtained at medium growth temperature. The annealing experiment by RTA of sample grown at $565^{\circ}$ shows a maximum band-gap shift of 78eV at $880^{\circ}$ for 3 min, and TEM shows that the origin of the blue shift of band-gap is the complete disappearance of ordering. Through annealing we can conclude that short time annealing affects only ordering and that most of the total band-gap reduction (~3/4) occurs by phase separation.
We investigated the quantum well intermixing (QWI) of a compressively strained InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple quantum well (MQW) by using impurity free vacancy diffusion technique. The samples with InGaAs/$SiO_2$ capping layer showed a higher degree of intermixing compared to that of InP/$SiO_2$ capping layer after rapid thermal annealing (RTA). Band-gap shift difference as large as 123 meV (195 nm) was observed between samples capped with InGaAs/$SiO_2$ and with InP/$SiO_2$ layer at RTA temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. Using the InGaAs/$SiO_2$ cap layer, the band-gap wavelength of MQW was changed by the intermixing from 1.55 $\mu\textrm{m}$ band to 1.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ band with a wavelength shift of a 237 nm. The transform from MQW structure to homogenous alloy was observed above the RTA temperature of $700^{\circ}C$.
In present work, experiments conducted to investigate the heat transfer characteristics and relationship between operating parameters and production of fresh water as output of the system. Plate Heat Exchanger (PHE) applied in vacuum evaporator for product fresh water that system intended to efficiently use low grade heat. PHE have become popular in chemical, power, food and refrigeration industries due to the efficient heat transfer performance, extremely compact design and flexibility of extend or modify to suit changed duty. The heat transfer part contains corrugated plates with 60 degree of chevron angle which verified by many researchers and commonly apply. Fresh water can be produced from saline water under near vacuum pressure by operating ejector. Consequently, evaporating temperature stay around $51-57^{\circ}C$ so it is possible to use any low grade heat source or renewable source. The maximum fresh water produced by freshwater generator with plat heat exchanger applied in the study was designed as 1.0 Ton/day.

Nanotechnology, especially vertically grown silicon nanowires, has gotten great attentions in biology due to characteristics of one dimensional nanostructure; controllable synthetic structure such as lengths, diameters, densities. Silicon nanowires are promising materials as nanoelectrodes due to their highly complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) - and bio-compatibility. Silicon nanowires are so intoxicated that are effective for bio molecular delivery and electrical stimulation. Vertical nanowires with integrated Au tips were fabricated for electrical intracellular interfacing with PC-12 cells. We have made synthesized two types of nanowire devices; one is multi-nanowires electrode for bio molecular sensing and electrical stimulation, and the other is single-nanowires electrode respectively. Here, we demonstrate that differentiation of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) treated PC-12 cells can be promoted depending on different magnitudes of electrical stimulation and density of Si NWs. It was fabricated by both bottom-up and top-down approaches using low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) with high vacuuming environment to electrically stimulate PC-12 cells. The effects of electrical stimulation with NGF on the morphological differentiation are observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and it induces neural outgrowth. Moreover, the cell cytosol can be dyed selectively depending on the degree of differentiation along with fluorescence microscopy measurement. Vertically grown silicon nanowires have further expected advantages in case of single nanowire fabrication, and will be able to expand its characteristics to diverse applications.

Currently, teeth whitening method which is applicable to dental surgery is that physician expertises give medical treatment to teeth directly dealed with a high concentration of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. If hydrogen peroxide concentration is too high for treatment of maximized teeth whitening effect [1], it is harmful to the human body [2]. To the maximum effective and no harmful teeth whitening effect in a short period of time at home, we have observed the whitening effect using carbamide peroxide (15%) and a low-temperature atmospheric pressure plasma jet which is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. The gas supplied conditions of the non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet was with the humidified (0.6%) gas in nitrogen or air at gas flow rate of 1000 sccm. Also, the measurement of chemical species from the jet was carried out using the optical emission spectroscopy (OES), the evidence of increased reactive oxygen species compared to non-humidified plasma jet. We have found that the whitening effect of the plasma is very excellent through this experiment, when bovine teeth are treated in carbamide peroxide (15%) and water vapor (0.2 to 1%). The brightness of whitening teeth was increased up to 2 times longer in the CIE chromaticity coordinates. The colorimetric spectrometer (CM-3500d) can measure color degree of whitening effect.

In this study, in contrast with cases in which Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) tip-induced reactions were instigated by the tunneling electrons, the local electric field, or the mechanical force between a tip and a surface, we found that the tungsten oxide (WO3) covered tungsten (W) tip of a STM acted as a chemical catalyst for the S-H dissociative adsorption of phenylthiol and 1-octanethiol onto a Ge(100) surface. By varying the distance between the tip and the surface, the degree of the tip-catalyzed adsorption could be controlled. We have found that the thiol head-group is the critical functional group for this catalysis and the catalytic material is the WO3 layer of the tip. After removing the WO3 layer by field emission treatment, the catalytic activity of the tip has been lost. 3-mercapto isobutyric acid is a chiral bi-functional molecule which has two functional groups, carboxylic acid group and thiol group, at each end. 3-Mercapto Isobutyric Acid adsorbs at Ge(100) surface only through carboxylic acid group at room temperature and this adsorption was enhanced by the tunneling electrons between a STM tip and the surface. Using this enhancement, it is possible to make thiol group-terminated surface where we desire. On the other hand, surprisingly, the WO3 covered W tip of STM was found to act as a chemical catalyst to catalyze the adsorption of 3-mercapto isobutyric acid through thiol group at Ge(100) surface. Using this catalysis, it is possible to make carboxylic acid group-terminated surface where we want. This functional group-selective adsorption of bi-functional molecule using the catalysis may be used in positive lithographic methods to produce semiconductor substrate which is terminated by desired functional groups.
