  • A Spinning Rotor Gauge was calibrated between $4.04\times10^{-3}$ Pa and $1.11\times10^{-2}$ Pa at the high vacuum standard by static expansion method. The results were analysed according to the document of 'Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement' of ISO. The expanded uncertainty was $3.0035\times10^{-3}$ Pa at $7.5448\times10^{-3}$ Pa. $95\%$ confidence level, and coverage factor of k = 1.

  • A Large thermal vacuum chamber (LTVC) for space environment simulation on large satellites was successfully developed and constructed by KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) in Korea with a local company. This chamber has an effective diameter of 8 meters and depth of 10 meters, and is composed of vacuum system, thermal control system, and anti-vibration system. Temperature below $-190^{\circ}C$ is maintained over the thermal shroud wrapping a satellite under $3.7{\times}10^{-5}Pa$ ($5{\times}10^{-7}torr$) vacuum level, and optical test can be done in this chamber by seismic mass with $10^{-5}g_{rms}$ or lower vibration level. In addition, the shroud temperature can be increased up to $123^{\circ}C$ using halogen lamps. Chamber control program based on PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) could control this large thermal vacuum chamber automatically.

  • Effect of modified atmosphere packaging conditions on quality changes of dry jujube was investigated. Dry jujubes with moisture content of 26.7% were packaged in PET/Al/PE film pouches with modified atmospheres. The tested packages include those with normal air, vacuum, CO2 flushing, N2 flushing and O2 scavenger. Packages were stored at 25$^{\circ}C$ for 6 months, during which ascorbic acid concentration, browning level, titratable acidity and surface color were measured. Generally modified atmosphere packages could improve quality retention of dry jujubes except that vacuum package resulted in large surface color change. CO2-flushed package showed the best quality retention of high ascorbic acid content and low browning during 112 days, but caused high amounts of ascorbic acid destruction and browning in longer storage. In all the modified atmosphere packages titratable acidity reached a maximum followed by decline and subsequent rise, while it increased linearly with time in normal air package. Considering ascorbic acid retention browning level and surface color changes during 112 days, the packages of CO2 flushing and N2 flushing were better than others.

  • Resonance fluorescence is the manifestation of the interaction between the physical system under consideration and the vacuum-field fluctuation. The fluorescence spectrum provides such physical informations as the energy-level structure of the system, instabilities and relative populations of the energy levels, etc.. One of the typical fluorescence spectra is the Mollow triplet appearing when two-level atoms are driven by a strong coherent field in free space$^{(1)}$ . In the weak field limit, the singlet instead of the triplet is obtained with a reduced linewidth due to the squeezing of one quadrature phase of the induced atomic dipole$^{(2)}$ . On the other hand, when the atoms are put inside a cavity rather than in free space, a doublet spectrum due to the vacuum Rabi-splitting is achieved, showing clearly the coupling of atoms and the cavity in the single-quantum limit$^{(3)}$ . • There are two types of vacuum die casting, one is known as the chill block method, and the other is the valve block method. Efficiency of the valve block method is better than the chill block method. However purchasing and maintaining cost of the former one is very high, the latter method is popular in many small and medium die casting shops. Simple evacuation system using chill vent was prepared to investigate the effect of the air pressure, hose length and chill vent type on the pressure change in die cavity in this study. The rate of evacuation was influenced by the evacuation method, chill vent condition and hose length. Evacuation time became longer and vacuum level lower when evacuating cavity via chill vent. It took a longer time to evacuate the cavity when a longer hose was used. Vacuum level in the cavity also decreased with increase in hose length.

  • Graphene was epitaxially grown on a 6H-SiC(0001) substrate by thermal decomposition of SiC under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we monitored the evolution of the graphene growth as a function of the temperature. We found that the evaporation of Si occurred dominantly from the corner of the step rather than on the terrace. A carbon-rich $(6{\sqrt{3}}{\times}6{\sqrt{3}})R30^{\circ}$ layer, monolayer graphene, and bilayer graphene were identified by measuring the roughness, step height, and atomic structures. Defect structures such as nanotubes and scattering defects on the monolayer graphene are also discussed. Furthermore, we confirmed that the Dirac points (ED) of the monolayer and bilayer graphene were clearly resolved by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS).
