  • As it takes very long time for the Transient Liquid Phase(TLP) bonding, we tried to reduce the bonding time by changing insert material for the high diffusivity element. On this study boron powder was doped as a insert material on the bonding surface of Rene 80 superalloy, and diffusion treated at 1150.deg.C under vacuum. On this method differently from the TLP bonding the insert material was not melted during bonding but only the base metal reacted with the boron was inducedly melted. Therefore, as this bonding mechanism is different from the existing ones, it is suggested as a Melting Induced Diffusion Bonding. When this process was used for the diffusion bonding, the bonding time including homogenization decreased greatly compared to the conventional TLP bonding.

  • The effect of bonding condition on tensile properties of joints diffusion bonded spheroidal graphite cast iron, FCD60 to Cr-Mo steel, SCM 440 was investigated. Diffusion bonding was performed with various temperatures, holding times, pressures and atmospheres. All tensile specimens were fractured at the bonding interface. The tensile strength and elongation was increased with increasing bonding temperature. Especially, tensile strength of joints bonded at 1123K was higher than that of a raw material, FCD60, and tensile strength of joints bonded at 1173K was equal to that of a raw material, SCM440, but elongation of all joints was lower than those of raw materials. There was little the effect of holding time on the tensile properties. In comparison with bonding atmosphere, the difference of tensile strength was not observed, but elongation of joint bonded at vacuum(6.7mPa and 67mPa) was higher than that of Ar gas. Higher the degee of vacuum, elongation increased. Tensile properties of diffusion bonds depended on microstructures of cast iron at the interface and void ratio. Microstructures of cast iron at interface changed with temperature, because decarburizing and interdiffusion at the interface occurs and transformation of austenite-1 ferrite + graphite occurs on the cooling process. The void ratio decreased with increasing temperature, especially, effected on the elongation.

  • Solid state diffusion bonding is the joining process performed by creep and diffusion, which is accelerated by heating below melting temperature and proper pressing, in vacuum or shielding gas atmosphere. By this process we can obtain sufficient joint which can't be expected from the fusion welding. For Ti-6Al-4V alloy, the optimum solid state diffusion bonding condition and mechanical properties of the joint were found, and micro void morphology at bond interface was observed by SEM. The results of tensile test showed sufficient joint, whose mechanical properties are similar to that of base metal. 850$^{\circ}$C, 3MPa is considered as the optimum bonding condition. Void morphology at interface is long and flat at the initial stage. As the percentage of bonded area increases, however, small and round voids are found. Variation of void shape can be explained as follows. As for the void shrinkage mechanism, at the initial stage, power law creep is the dominant, but diffusion mechanism is dominant when the percentage of bonded area is increased.

  • In this study, an injection mold with conformal cooling channels was designed and manufactured for use in the production of a thick plastic cosmetic container that required high gloss surfaces. A cooling analysis verified the design of the conformal cooling channel for the cosmetic container, and also showed that the cooling efficiency was superior to that of the straight cooling channel. Slide cores designed with the conformal cooling channel were manufactured using the Layers Parting method and vacuum diffusion bonding. Subsequent test injection and quality inspection showed no problem in the appearance and dimensional accuracy of the produced product. The cycle time for product production was about 110 seconds, sufficient for mass production.

  • Using a customized diffusion bonder, we executed diffusion bonding for ring shaped white gold and red gold samples (inner, outer diameter, and thickness were 15.7, 18.7, and 3.0 mm, respectively) at a temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and applied pressure of 2300 N in a vacuum of $5{\times}10^{-2}$ torr for 180 seconds. Optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to investigate the microstructure and compositional changes. The mechanical properties were confirmed by Vickers hardness and shear strength tests. Optical microscopy and FE-SEM confirmed the uniform bonding interface, which was without defects such as micro pores. EDS mapping analysis confirmed that each gold alloy was 14K with the intended composition; Ni and Cu was included as coloring metals in the white and red gold alloys, respectively. The effective diffusion coefficient was estimated based on EDS line scanning. Individual values of Ni and Cu were $5.0{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$ and $8.9{\times}10^{-8}cm^2/s$, respectively. These values were as large as those of the melting points due to the accelerated diffusion in this customized diffusion bonder. Vickers hardness results showed that the hardness values of white gold and red gold were 127.83 and 103.04, respectively, due to solid solution strengthening. In addition, the value at the interface indicated no formation of intermetallic compound around the bonding interface. From the shear strength test, the sample was found not to be destroyed at up to 100,000 gf due to the high bonding strength. Therefore, these results confirm the successful diffusion bonding of 14K white-red golds with a diffusion bonder at a low temperature of $780^{\circ}C$ and a short processing time of 180 seconds.

  • In this study, the effect of bonding temperature and bonding pressure on deformation and tensile properties of diffusion bonded joint of STS304 compact heat exchanger was investigated. The diffusion bonds were prepared at 700, 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60 and 90 min in pressure of 3, 5, and 7 MPa under high vacuum condition. The height deformation of joint decreased and the width deformation of joint increased with increasing bonding pressure at $900^{\circ}C$. The ratio of non-bonded layer and void observed in the joint decreased with increasing bonding temperature and bonding pressure. Three types of the fracture surface were observed after tensile test. The non-bonded layer was observed in diffusion bonded joint preformed at $700^{\circ}C$, the non-bonded layer and void were observed at $800^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the ductile fracture occurred in diffusion bonded joint preformed at $900^{\circ}C$. Tensile load of joint bonded at $800^{\circ}C$ was proportional to length of bonded layer and tensile load of joint bonded at $900^{\circ}C$ was proportional to minimum width of pattern. The tensile strength of joint was same as base metal.

  • In order to study the bonding mechanism of Ni/B/Ni transient liquid phase bonding system, width of liquid layers were calculated, where in this system melting point of insert material(B) is higher than bonding temperature and melting point of base metal(Ni). Caclulated values were compared with experimental ones which were measured by bonding Ni/B/Ni system at 1433-1474K under vacuum atmosphere. As results, the width of initial liquid layer of Ni/B/Ni system was calculated as $W_{IL}$ = $W_{o}$[1 + {2.100..rho.$_{S/}$ ( $X_{3}$ + $X_{4}$)..rho.$_{Ni}$ }-.rho.$_{S/}$.rho. Ni/], and it was nearly same with experimental values. Maximum width of liquid layer, width of liquid layer during isothermal solidification and isothermal solidification time were calculated also.o.o.o.

  • The results gained as part of the study on weldability of compositions from steels, aluminium, titanium alloys in various combinations including similar and dissimilar metal bonding variants with reference to solution of specific practical problems are presented in this work. It has been shown that in the case of HIP/DB carried out with direct interaction of bonding surfaces of the most dissimilar material combinations under study, formation of high-quality joints is not assured due to various reasons. That is why development of special bonding techniques was required. The bonding techniques developed and used for HIP/DB of dissimilar steels, "Steel-bronze", "Titanium-niobium"; "Titanium-steel" and other compositions under study ensured vacuum-tight microvoid-free joints strength of a which was equal to the milder parent metal, including those obtained at reduced welding pressures. Examples of new products manufactured by HIP/DB using the technologies developed are presented.

  • The effect of base metal grain size on isothermal solidification behavior of Ni-base superalloy, CMSX-2 during transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was investigated employing MBF-80 insert metal. TLP-bonding of single crystal. coarse-grained and fine-grained CMSX-2 was carried out at 1373∼1548k for various holding time in vacuum. The eutectic width diminished linearly with the square root of holding time during isothermal solidification process for single crystal, coarse-grained and fine-grained base metals. The completion time for isothermal solidification decreased in the order ; single crystal, coarse-grained and fine-grained base metals. The difference of isothermal solidification rates produced when bonding the different base metals could be explained quantitatively by the effect of base metal grain boundaries on the apparent average diffusion coefficient of boron in CMSX-2.
