VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Present study deals with the numerical analysis of flow field around bodies steadily moving near free-surface using FLUENT-VOF method. Validations were made by applying to three typical examples ; 2-D submerged hydrofoil, 3-D surface piercing body and container ship. It was found that the commercial software, FLUENT, is useful in practical use, and VOF method is capable of handling free-surface around moving bodies although discussions are limited to the analysis in qualitative sense.

The application of multiphase flows is increasingly being applied to analyze phenomena such as single phase flows where the fluid boundary changes continuously over time or the problem of mixing a liquid phase and a gas phase. In particular, multiphase flow models that take into account incompressible Newtonian fluids for liquid and gas are often applied to solve the problems of the free water surface such as wave fields. In general, multi-phase flow models require time-based the surface tracking of each fluid's phase boundary, which determines the accuracy of the final calculation of the model. This study evaluates the advection performance of representative VOF-type boundary tracking techniques applied to various CFD numerical codes. The effectiveness of the FCT method to control the numerical flux to minimize the numerical diffusion in the conventional VOF-type boundary tracking method and advection calculation was mainly evaluated. In addition, the possibility of tracking performance of free surface using CIP method (Yabe and Aoki, 1991) was also investigated. Numerical results show that the FCT-VOF method introducing an anti-diffusive flux to precent excessive diffusion is superior to other methods under the confined conditions in this study. The results from this study are expected to be used as an important basic data in selecting free surface tracking techniques applied to various numerical codes.

In this study, the turbulent free surface around KVLCC1 employed in the circular motion test simulation is numerically calculated using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) code, FLUENT. Also, hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments around a ship model are calculated during the steady turning. Numerical simulations of the turbulent flows with free surface around KVLCC1 have been carried out by use of RANS equation based on calculation of hydrodynamic forces and yaw moments exerted upon the ship hull. Wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. VOF method is known as one of the most effective numerical techniques handling two-fluid domains of different density simultaneously. Boundary layer thickness and wake field are changed various yaw velocities of ship model during the steady turning. The calculated hydrodynamic forces are compared with those obtained by model tests.
In this paper, three-dimensional free-surface flows are simulated by using two different numerical methods, the constrained interpolation profile (CIP)-based and finite volume (FV)-based methods. In the CIP-based method, the governing equations are solved on stationary staggered Cartesian grids by a finite difference method, and an immersed boundary technique is applied to deal with wave-body interactions. In the FV-based method, the governing equations are solved by applying collocated finite volume discretization, and body-fitted meshes are used. A free-surface boundary is considered as the interface of the multi-phase flow with air and water, and a volumeof-fluid (VOF) approach is applied to trace the free surface. Among many variations of the VOF-type method, the tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing (THINC) and the compressive interface capturing scheme for arbitrary meshes (CICSAM) techniques are used in the CIP-based method and FV-based method, respectively. Numerical simulations have been carried out for dam-breaking and wave-body interaction problems. The computational results of the two methods are compared with experimental data and their differences are observed.

A drop-on-demand inkjet is used widely for various applications. Therefore, it is important to understand the jetting behavior of the drop from the piezo inkjet. In this study, to predict the jetting behavior, VOF (Volume-of-Fluid) simulation techniques were used and compared with the experimental results. The experimentally measured meniscus movement was used as the input data for the simulation. To verify the simulation, the measured jetting behavior of the mixture fluids of ethylene glycol and IPA (isopropyl alcohol), which has a mixing ratio of 50:50, was used. The numerical simulation of the drop formation using various mixture ratios and its comparison with the measured drop formation confirmed that the proposed method can predict the actual jetting. On the other hand, the satellite drop behavior showed slight differences because the small sized droplet is subject to a more aerodynamic effect during flight because the kinetic energy of the satellite droplet is far smaller than that of the main droplet.
The flow of freshly mixed cement-based material shows thixotropy, which implies some difficulties on robust measurement of its rheological properties: The flow curve of thixotropic materials depends on the used protocol. For examples, higher viscosity is obtained when the rate of shear strain is more quickly increased. Even though precise measurement and modelling of the concrete rheology needs to consider the thixotropic effect, engineers in the concrete field prefer considering as a non-thixotropic Herschel-Bulkley fluid, even more simply Bingham fluid. That is due to robustness of the measurement and application in casting process. In the aspect of simplification, this papers attempts to mimic the thixoropic flow by the non-thixotropic Herschel-Bulkley model. Disregarding the thixotropy of cement based materials allows us to adopt the rheological concept in the field. An optimized protocol to measure the Bingham parameters was finally found based on the accuracy and reproducibility test of cement paste samples, which minimizes the error of simulation stemming from the assumption of non-thixotropy.

The 3D structure of GDL for fuel cells was measured using high-resolution X-ray tomography in order to study material transport in the GDL. A computational algorithm has been developed to remove noise in the 3D image and construct 3D elements representing carbon fibers of GDL, which were used for both structural and fluid analyses. Changes in the pore structure of GDL under various compression levels were calculated, and the corresponding volume meshes were generated to evaluate the anisotropic permeability of gas within GDL as a function of compression. Furthermore, the transfer of liquid water and reactant gases was simulated by using the volume of fluid (VOF) and pore-network model (PNM) techniques. In addition, the simulation results of liquid water transport in GDL were validated by analogous experiments to visualize the diffusion of fluid in porous media. Through this research, a procedure for simulating the material transport in deformed GDL has been developed; this will help in optimizing the clamping force of fuel cell stacks as well as in determining the design parameters of GDL, such as thickness and porosity.

The behavior of wave-induced pore water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed, and the resultant structure failure are investigated, which are used in design of the composite breakwater representing the coastal and harbor structures. Numerical simulation techniques have been widely used to assess these behaviors through linear and nonlinear methods in many researches. While the combination of strongly nonlinear analytical method and turbulence model have not been applied yet, which can simulate these characteristics more accurately. In this study, olaFlow model considering the wave-breaking and turbulent phenomena is applied through VOF and LES methods, which gives more exact solution by using the multiphase flow analytical method. The verification of olaFlow model is demonstrated by comparing the experimental and numerical results for the interactions of regular waves-seabed and regular waves-composite breakwater-seabed. The characteristics of the spatial distributions of horizontal wave pressure, excess-pore-water pressure, mean flow velocity and mean vorticity on the upright caisson, and inside the rubble mound and seabed are discussed, as well as the relation between the mean distribution of vorticity size and mean turbulent kinetic energy. And the stability of composite breakwater are also discussed.

This paper describes the development of interactive visualization techniques and a program that allow us to visualize the structure of the volume data and interactively select and visualize the isosurface components using contour tree. The main characteristic of this technique is to provide an algorithm that draws the contour tree in 2D plane in a way that users easily understand the tree, and to provide an algorithm that can efficiently extract an isosurface component utilizing GPU's parallel architecture. The main characteristic of the program we developed through implementing the algorithms is to provide us with an interactive user interface based on the contour tree for extracting an isosurface component and visualization that integrates with previous isosurface and volume rendering techniques. To show the excelland vof our methods, we applied 3D biomedical volume data to our algorithms. The results show that we could interactively select the isosurface components that represent a polypeptide chain, a ventricle and a femur respectively using the user interface based on our contour tree layout method, and extract the isosurface components with 3x-4x higher speed compared to previous methods.

For the design of composite breakwater as representative one of the coastal and harbor structures, it has been widely discussed by the researchers about the relation between the behavior of excess-pore-water pressure inside the rubble mound and seabed caused by the wave load and its structural failure. Recently, the researchers have tried to verify its relation through the numerical simulation technique. The above researches through numerical simulation have been mostly applied by the linear and nonlinear analytic methods, but there have been no researches through the numerical simulation by the strongly nonlinear mutiphase flow analytical method considering wave-breaking phenomena by VOF method and turbulence model by LES method yet. In the preceding research of this study, olaFlow model based on the mutiphase flow analytical method was applied to the nonlinear interaction analysis of regular wave-composite breakwater-seabed. Also, the same numerical techniques as preceding research are utilized for the analysis of irregular wave-composite breakwater-seabed in this study. Through this paper, it is investigated about the horizontal wave pressures, the time variations of excess-pore-water pressure and their frequency spectra, mean flow velocities, mean vorticities, mean turbulent kinetic energies and etc. around the caisson, rubble mound of the composite breakwater and seabed according to the changes of significant wave height and period. From these results, it was found that maximum nondimensional excess-pore water pressure, mean turbulent kinetic energy and mean vorticity come to be large equally on the horizontal plane in front of rubble mound, circulation of inflow around still water level and outflow around seabed is formed in front of rubble caisson.
