  • This paper describes the generation and maximum run-up heights of cnoidal waves with varying periods by the numerical model. The model solves the Reynolds equations and the k-epsilon equations for the turbulent analysis. To track free surface displacements, the volume of fluid(VOF) method is employed. It is shown that profiles of the numerically generated cnoidal waves agree well with analytical solutions. The computed maximum run-up heights are compared with laboratory measurements and those of the boundary element method. The present model provides more agreeable results to laboratory measurements that the boundary element model.

  • In the era of water scarcity, saving toilet water is one of the most effective ways to save water. In this study, two-phase flow for the development of highly-efficient toilet has been analysed with VOF(Volume Of Fluid) method. Since the whole model requires extensive computing time, part of the whole model has also been adopted to reduce the analysis time. Four different rim models were considered for flow distribution analysis and sizes of rim holes were found to become more important rather than locations or numbers of rim holes in achieving flow distribution effectively. In addition, velocity and pressure of two-phase flow due to siphon phenomenon have been studied through the analysis of whole model. Therefore, this study provides a variety of fundamental data for the development of highly-efficient toilet.

  • Performed were 2-phase numerical studies on two types of fuel atomizers, plain orifice and pressure swirl atomizer. In case of plain orifice, cavitation model was applied so that discharge coefficient, cavitation size, and magnitude of cavitation region characterized and compared with experimental results for several different pressure enforced to the orifice. In case of swirl atomizer, VOF model was applied to analyze air core size, spray angle, and wall pressure distributions with comparison of experimental results.

  • Overtopping wave energy convertor is an offshore wave energy convertor for collecting the overtopping waves converting the water pressure head into electric power through the hydro turbines. This paper presents a numerical wave tank based on the commercial CFD code Fluent. The Reynolds Averaged Naiver-Stokes and VOF model is utilized to generate the 2D numerical linear propagating waves, which has been validated by the analytical solutions. Several incident wave conditions and shape parameters are calculated in the optimal designing investigation of the overtopping characteristics and discharge for the overtopping wave energy convertor.

  • Recently, various novel numerical models based on Navier-Stokes equation rave been developed for calculating wave motions in the sea with coastal or ocean structures. Among those models, Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method might be the most popular one, and it has been used for numerical simulations of wave motions including complicated phenomena of wave breakings. VOF method, however, needs enormous computation time and large computational storage memories in general, thus it is practically difficult to use VOF method for calculations in the case of random waves because long and stable computation ( e.g. for more than 100 significant wave periods) is required to obtain statistically meaningful results. On the other hand of the wave motion is potential motion, Boundary Element Method (BEM), which is a much faster and more accurate method than VOF method, am be effectively used. The aim of this study is to develop a new efficient model applicable to calculations of wave motion and/or wave-structure interactions under random waves. To achieve this, a strictly combined BEM-VOF model has been developed by making the best use of both methods' merits; VOF method is used in a restricted fluid domain around a structure where complicated phenomena of wave breakings may exist, and BEM is used in the other domains far from the disturbance where the wave motion may be assumed to be potential. The verification of the model was performed with numerical results for Stokes'5th order wave propagation and a random wave propagation.

  • In the numerical simulation of wave fields using a multi-phase flow model that considers simultaneous flows of materials with different states such as gas, liquid and solid, there is need of an accurate representation of the interface separating the fluids. We adopted an algebraic interface capturing method called tangent of hyperbola for interface-capturing(THINC) method for the capture of the free-surface in computations of multi-phase flow simulations instead of geometrical-type methods such a volume of fluid(VOF) method. The THINC method uses a hyperbolic tangent functions to represent the surface, and compute the numerical flux for the fluid fraction functions. One of the remarkable advantages of THINC method is its easy applicability to incorporate various numerical codes based on Navier-Stokes solver because it does not require the extra geometric reconstruction needed in most of VOF-type methods. Several tests were carried out in order to investigate the advection of interfaces and to verify the applicability of the THINC method to wave fields based on the one-field model for immiscible two-phase flows (TWOPM). The numerical results revealed that the THINC method is able to track the interface between air and water separating the fluids although its algorithm is fairly simple.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to analyze thermo-fluid dynamic and missile-motion performance by using two-phase flow model and dynamic grid system. To analyze the interaction among the hot gas, coolant, and mixture flow, Realizable $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence and VOF(Volume Of Fluid) model were chosen and a parametric study was performed with the change of coolant flow rate. As a result of the analysis, pressure of the canister showed a large difference depending on the presence or absence of the coolant, and also showed a dependancy on the amount of coolant. Velocity and acceleration were dependent on the canister pressure.

  • The application of multiphase flows is increasingly being applied to analyze phenomena such as single phase flows where the fluid boundary changes continuously over time or the problem of mixing a liquid phase and a gas phase. In particular, multiphase flow models that take into account incompressible Newtonian fluids for liquid and gas are often applied to solve the problems of the free water surface such as wave fields. In general, multi-phase flow models require time-based the surface tracking of each fluid's phase boundary, which determines the accuracy of the final calculation of the model. This study evaluates the advection performance of representative VOF-type boundary tracking techniques applied to various CFD numerical codes. The effectiveness of the FCT method to control the numerical flux to minimize the numerical diffusion in the conventional VOF-type boundary tracking method and advection calculation was mainly evaluated. In addition, the possibility of tracking performance of free surface using CIP method (Yabe and Aoki, 1991) was also investigated. Numerical results show that the FCT-VOF method introducing an anti-diffusive flux to precent excessive diffusion is superior to other methods under the confined conditions in this study. The results from this study are expected to be used as an important basic data in selecting free surface tracking techniques applied to various numerical codes.

  • Precise modeling and analysis of closed bomb test(CBT) combustion using solid propellants was performed. The fluid structure interaction(FSI) method was implemented to analyze the gas and solid phases at the same time. The Eulerian analysis method was applied for the gas phase and grain combustion, and the Lagrangian analysis method was implemented for the grain movement. The interaction between the solid phase grains and the combustion gas was fully coupled through the source term. The volume of fluid(VOF) method was used to simulate the burning distance of the grain and the movement of the combustion surface. The force acting on the grain was comprised of the pressure and gravity acting on the grain burning surface, and the grain burning rate and grain movement speed were considered in the velocity term of the VOF. The combustion analysis was performed for both one and three grains, and fairly compared with the experiments. The acoustic field during grain combustion due to pressure fluctuations was also analyzed.
