  • When a ship proceeds in confined water, like canal, the water ahead of ship is pushed by hull. This pushed water returns to the side and under the hull, and this returned water will make fluid velocity higher at the side and under the hull, compared to the case in the infinite water depth. Due to the higher velocity, the pressure under the hull will decrease, resulting in the ship drop. This phenomenon is called "ship squat" and ship squat will result in various marine accidents. In this paper, for predicting ship squat, numerical calculation was carried out using commercial CFD code, FLUENT. To confirm wave pattern profile around the ship, VOF(Volume of Fluid) method was applied. The calculated results were compared with other paper's results and empirical methods.

  • In this paper, a two-phase flow solver $HiFoam^{(R)}$ has been developed based on the $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ to predict resistance of a ship in calm water. The VOF method of $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was reviewed and a simple flux limiter was introduced to enhance the robustness of the solver. The procedure for predicting ship motion was modified by introducing Quasi-Steady Fluid-Body Interaction (QS-FBI) with least square regression to improve the efficiency. Other minor factors were considered as well in terms of the efficiency and robustness. The HiFoam was applied to KCS and JBC simulations to validate its efficiency and accuracy by comparing the results to experimental data and STAR-CCM+. The $HiFoam^{(R)}$ was also applied to various ships and it showed good agreements to the experimental data.

  • A numerical model based on the SOLA-VOF method, which can calculate the transient free-surface configuration of the melt, has been developed in order to analyze melt flow in the investment mold. The computational results were compared with experimental results obtained from pure aluminum investment casting. Heat transfer analysis, with and without consideration of melt flow effect has been performed. It can be concluded that analysis of melt flow in the investment mold, provides the optimum conditions for gating design. It also enables more precise solidification simulation, since heat loss, while filling the thin and complex investment mold, plays an important role in determining the solidification sequence.

  • In the past, ports have been mainly developed in natural harbors but nowadays ports are built wherever they can be economically justified. Therefore, construction of breakwater in area that establishment of structure is disadvantageous is risen according to the change of conditions to the location for ports. In case of building gravity breakwater in such point, need that plane shapes of more reasonable section permitting wave overtopping is necessary. One of the earliest methods for solving unsteady incompressible flow including free surfaces is the MAC(Marker And Cell) method by Harlow and Welch (1965). Recently. VOF(Volume Of Fluid) method to improve several drawbacks of MAC method is suggested by Hirt and Nichols(1981) and utilized extensively in fields of hydrodynamics. Wave overtopping phenomenon is simulated including wave breaking for permeable breakwater by numerical analysis and investigated features of wave overtopping behind structure using VOF method.

  • The flood impact pressure acting on a vertical wall resulting from a dam-breaking problem is simulated using a navier-Stokes(N-S) solver. The N-S solver uses Eulerian Finite Volume Method(FVM) along with Volume Of Fluid(VOF) method for 2-D incompressible free surface flows. A Split Lagrangian Advection(SLA) scheme for VOF method is implemented in this paper. The SLA scheme is developed based on an algorithm of Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC). The coupling between the continuity and momentum equations is affected by using a well-known Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm. Several two-dimensional numerical simulations of the dam-breaking problem are presented to validate the accuracy and demonstrate the capability of the present algorithm. The significance of the time step and grid resolution are also discussed. The computational results are compared with experimental data and with computations by other numerical methods. The results showed a favorable agreement of water impact pressure as well as the global fluid motion.

  • Recently Oscillating Water Column (OWC) plants have been widely employed in wave energy conversion applications. It is necessary to investigate the chamber and optimize its shape parameters for maximizing air flow and energy conversion due to wave conditions. A 2D numerical wave tank based on a Fluent and VOF model is developed to generate the incident waves and is validated by theoretical solutions. The oscillating water column motion in the chamber predicted by the numerical method is compared with the available experimental data. Several geometric scales of the chamber are calculated to investigate the effect of the shape parameters on the oscillating water column motion and wave energy conversion.

  • It is essential to accurately predict the change in water level, velocity, and flow rate for each passage of the grit chamber according to the operating conditions of the pump. In this study, VOF multiphase flow analysis was performed, and the flow characteristics of the grit chamber were predicted. As a result of simulations, the sedimentation phenomenon after the entrance of the grit chamber channel is expected to occur on the side walls. When 6 channels are used, the average speed of the channels is about 52% of the design standard, and when 4 channels are used, the value increases to 74% of the design standard. The average water level in the channels tends to decrease as the flow velocity increases, and the water level in the absorption well with a larger flow rate is maintained lower than that in the absorption well with a smaller flow rate.

THINC(Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface-Capturing)법을 적용하였다.

  • The numerical efforts are presented for investigation of irregular waves passing a slit cassion and a warock block breakwater. In the numerical model, the Reynolds equations are solved by a finite difference method and $k-\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method(VOF) is employed. Numerical predictions of reflection and transmission coefficients are compared with those of the warock block breakwater with the slit caisson. Energy dissipation and seawater exchange rates of the slit caisson are better than those of the warock block breakwater.
