Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a significant concern when designing slender structures with square cross sections. VIV strongly depends on structural dynamics and flow states, which depend on the conditions of the approaching flow and shape of a structure. Therefore, the effects of the angle of attack on the coupling effects of VIV for a square cylinder are expected to be significant in practice. In this study, the aerodynamic forces for a fixed and elastically mounted square cylinder were measured using wind pressure tests. Aerodynamic forces on the stationary cylinder are firstly discussed by comparisons of variation of statistical aerodynamic force and wind pressure coefficient with wind angle of attack. The coupling effect between the aerodynamic forces and the motion of the oscillating square cylinder by VIV is subsequently investigated in detail at typical wind angels of attack with occurrence of three typical flow regimes, i.e., leading-edge separation, separation bubble (reattachment), and attached flow. The coupling effect are illustrated by discussing the onset of VIV, characteristics of aerodynamic forces during VIV, and interaction between motion and aerodynamic forces. The results demonstrate that flow states can be classified based on final separation points or the occurrence of reattachment. These states significantly influence coupling effects of the oscillating cylinder. Vibration enhances vortex shedding, which creates strong fluctuations in aerodynamic forces. However, differences in the lock-in range, aerodynamic force, and interaction process for angles of attack smaller and larger than the critical angle of attack revealed noteworthy characteristics in the VIV of a square cylinder.

Herein, we report meaningful and selective review of the progress made on 'Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV)' and 'Vortex Induced Motion (VIM)' of 'Structures of Specific Shapes (SoSS)' subjected to steady uniform flow and of relevance to/in marine structures. Important and critical elements of the numerical methods, experimental methods, and physical ideas are listed and analysed critically and the limitations of the current state of art of VIV/VIM are discussed in-detail. Our focus and aim are to analyse the existing researches with respect to the application in analyses, design and production of marine structures and the reported reviews centre on these only. We identify the critical and important issues that exist in the current literature and utilise these issues to highlight the challenges that need to be tackled to design and develop new age marine structures that can exist and operate safely in the areas of dominance by the VIV/VIM. Finally, we also identify some areas for future scope of research on VIV/VIM.

The numerical simulations for the Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV) of the cylinders with different combinations of mass ratio and frequency ratio were performed under the Reynolds (Re) number ranges of 1450-10200, 5800-40800 and 13050-91800 by using the embedded programs in OpenFoam. By combining with the modified SST k-ω turbulence model, the coupled Unsteady Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes equations and double-degree-of-freedom vibration equations were solved. After analyzing the results, it is found that the some characteristics of the VIV have changed with the increase of the range of Re number, and the effects of Re number on vibration characteristics are also different under different combinations of mass ratio and frequency ratio. On this basis, the influence law of Re number on the characteristics of VIV of the cylinders is summarized, which can provide a reference for the research of VIV under higher Re number.
Higher-mode vertical vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) have been observed on several steel box-girder suspension bridges where different vertical modes are selectively excited in turn with wind velocity in accordance with the Strouhal law. Understanding the relationship of VIV amplitudes for different modes of vibration is very important for wind-resistant design of long-span box-girder suspension bridges. In this study, the basic rectangular cross-section with side ratio of B/D=6 is used to investigate the effect of different modes on VIV amplitudes by section model tests. The section model is flexibly mounted in wind tunnel with a variety of spring constants for simulating different modes of vibration and the non-dimensional vertical amplitudes are determined as a function of reduced velocity U/fD. Two 'lock-in' ranges are observed at the same onset reduced velocities of approximately 4.8 and 9.4 for all cases. The second 'lock-in' range, which is induced by the conventional vortex shedding, consistently gives larger responses than the first one and the Sc-normalized maximum non-dimensional responses are almost the same for different spring constants. The first 'lock-in' range where the vibration frequency is approximately two times the vortex shedding frequency is probably a result of super-harmonic resonance or the "frequency demultiplication". The main conclusion drawn from the section model study, central to the higher-mode VIV of suspension bridges, is that the VIV amplitude for different modes is the same provided that the Sc number for these modes is identical.
Long-span bridges with high flexibility and low structural damping are very susceptible to the vortex-induced vibration (VIV), which causes extremely negative impacts on the ride comfort of vehicles running on the bridges. To assess the ride comfort of vehicles running on the long-span bridges subjected to VIV, a coupled wind-vehicle-bridge system applicable to the VIV case is firstly developed in this paper. In this system, the equations of motion of the vehicles and the bridge subjected to VIV are established and coupled through the vehicle-bridge interaction. Based on the dynamic responses of the vehicles obtained by solving the coupled system, the ride comfort of the vehicles can be evaluated using the method given in ISO 2631-1. At last, the proposed framework is applied to several case studies, where a long-span suspension bridge and two types of vehicles are taken into account. The effects of vehicle speed, vehicle type, road roughness and vehicle number on the ride comfort are investigated.
A series of model tests was carried out to investigate the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of a free hanging PVC pipe under forced oscillation conditions. The prescribed displacement with a period and amplitude was forced at the top of the riser. The motion of the riser along its length was measured with underwater cameras in three dimensions. The top-excited responses in the inline direction and vortex-induced vibration in the cross-flow direction were examined in the time and frequency domains. Multi-peak frequencies in the VIV were demonstrated to be strongly dependent upon the Keulegan-Carpenter number, corresponding with the results of Blevin. It was found that the Reynolds numbers (excitation period) was a critical parameter for the dominant VIV characteristics, even under the condition of using the same Keulegan-Carpenter number, under the top-excited condition. In the resonance at the nth natural frequency by the forced-motion induced VIV frequency, the riser responded with a large amplitude and forced frequency, dominantly in the VIV CF direction.

A laboratory experiment is conducted is to investigate the behaviour of a low-mass-ratio and high aspect ratio flexible cylinder under vortex-induced vibration (VIV). A flexible cylinder with aspect ratio of 100 and mass ratio of 1.17 is towed horizontally to generate uniform flow profile. The range of Reynolds number is from 1380 to 13800. Vibration amplitude, in-line and cross-flow frequency response, amplitude trajectory, mean tension variation and hydrodynamic force coefficients are analyzed based on the measurement from strain gauges, load cell and CCD camera. Experimental results indicate that broad-banded lock-in region is found for the cylinder with a small Strouhal number. The frequency switches in the present study indicates the change of the VIV phenomenon. The hydrodynamic force responses provide more understanding on the VIV of a low mass ratio cylinder.

The Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) test system on deepwater riser based on Bare Fiber Bragg Grating (BFBG) sensor technology was designed. Meanwhile, a riser VIV response numerical model was established based on the work-energy principle. The results show that the first-order vibration frequency dominates the vibration of the riser, and as the velocity increases, the dominant frequency of the riser gradually increases under the effect of different top tensions. At the same velocity, as the top tension increases step by step, the dominant frequency and fatigue damage at the same position along the axial length of the riser both gradually decreases. The model test and numerical simulation show a relatively consistent change, maintaining a high degree of agreement. The process control system based on BFBG of model test has excellent performance, and FBG sensors have great advantages in VIV test of a vertical riser in water.
The usage of conventional tuned mass damper (TMD) was proved as an effective method for passive mitigating vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a bridge deck. Although a variety of linear TMD systems have been so far utilized for vibration control of suspension bridges, a sensitive TMD mechanism to wind spectrum frequency is lacking. Here, we introduce a bistable tuned mass damper (BTMD) mechanism which has an exceptional sensitivity to a broadband input of vortex shedding velocity for suppressing VIV in suspension bridge deck. By use of the Monte Carlo simulation, performance of the nonlinear BTMD is shown to be more efficient than the conventional linear TMD under two different wind load excitations of harmonic (sinusoidal) and broadband input of vortex shedding. Consequently, an appropriate algorithm is proposed to optimize the design parameters of the nonlinear BTMD for Kap Shui Mun Bridge, and then the BTMD system is localized for the interior deck of the suspension bridge.
Open-cross-section composite beam (OCB) tends to suffer vortex-induced vibration (VIV) due to its bluff aerodynamic shape. A cable-stayed bridge equipped with typical OCB is taken as an example in this paper to conduct sectional model wind tunnel test. Vortex-induced vibration is observed and maximum vibration amplitudes are obtained. CFD approach is employed to calculate the flow field around original cross sections in service stage and construction stage, as well as sections added with three different countermeasures: splitters, slabs and wind fairings. Results show that flow separate on the upstream edge and cause vortex shedding on original section. Splitters can only smooth the flow field on the upper surface, while slabs cannot smooth flow field on the upper or lower surface too much. Thus, splitters or slabs cannot serve as valid aerodynamic means. Wind tunnel test results show that VIV can only be mitigated when wind fairings are mounted, by which the flow field above and below the bridge deck are accelerated simultaneously.
