Deep learning forecasting for financial realized volatilities with aid of implied volatilities and internet search volumes (금융 실현변동성을 위한 내재변동성과 인터넷 검색량을 활용한 딥러닝)

  • In forecasting realized volatility of the major US stock price indexes (S&P 500, Russell 2000, DJIA, Nasdaq 100), internet search volume reflecting investor's interests and implied volatility are used to improve forecast via a deep learning method of the LSTM. The LSTM method combined with search volume index produces better forecasts than existing standard methods of the vector autoregressive (VAR) and the vector error correction (VEC) models. It also beats the recently proposed vector error correction heterogeneous autoregressive (VECHAR) model which takes advantage of the cointegration relation between realized volatility and implied volatility.

  • It is necessary to check mutual correlations between related variables because housing prices are influenced by a lot of variables of the economy both internally and externally. In this paper, employing the Granger causality test, we have validated interrelated relationship between the variables. In addition, there is cointegration associations in the results of the cointegration test between the variables. Therefore, an analysis using a vector error correction model including an error correction term has been attempted. As a result of the empirical comparative analysis of the forecasting performance with ARIMA and VAR models, it is confirmed that the forecasting performance by vector error correction model is superior to those of the former two models.

  • Cointegration(together with VARMA(vector ARMA)) has been proven to be useful for analyzing multivariate non-stationary data in the field of financial time series. It provides a linear combination (which turns out to be stationary series) of non-stationary component series. This linear combination equation is referred to as long term equilibrium between the component series. We consider two sets of Korean bivariate financial time series and then illustrate cointegration analysis. Specifically estimated VAR(vector AR) and VECM(vector error correction model) are obtained and CV(cointegrating vector) is found for each data sets.

The Behavior of the Term Structure of Interest Rates with the Markov Regime Switching Models (마코프 국면전환을 고려한 이자율 기간구조 연구)

  • This study examines a cointegrated vector autoregressive (VAR) model where parameters are subject to switch across the regimes in the term structure of interest rates. To employ the regime switching framework, the Markov-switching vector error correction model (MS-VECM) is allowed to the regime shifts in the vector of intercept terms, the variance-covariance terms, the error correction terms, and the autoregressive coefficient parts. The corresponding approaches are illustrated using the term structure of interest rates in the US Treasury bonds over the period of 1958 to 2009. Throughout the modeling procedure, we find that the MS-VECM can form a statistically adequate representation of the term structure of interest rate in the US Treasury bonds. Moreover, the regime switching effects are analyzed in connection with the historical government monetary policy and with the recent global financial crisis. Finally, the results from the comparisons both in information criteria and in forecasting exercises with and without the regime switching lead us to conclude that the models in the presence of regime dependence are superior to the linear VECM model.

How to improve oil consumption forecast using google trends from online big data?: the structured regularization methods for large vector autoregressive model

  • We forecast the US oil consumption level taking advantage of google trends. The google trends are the search volumes of the specific search terms that people search on google. We focus on whether proper selection of google trend terms leads to an improvement in forecast performance for oil consumption. As the forecast models, we consider the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and the structured regularization method for large vector autoregressive (VAR-L) model of Nicholson et al. (2017), which select automatically the google trend terms and the lags of the predictors. An out-of-sample forecast comparison reveals that reducing the high dimensional google trend data set to a low-dimensional data set by the LASSO and the VAR-L models produces better forecast performance for oil consumption compared to the frequently-used forecast models such as the autoregressive model, the autoregressive distributed lag model and the vector error correction model.

국채선물을 이용한 채권포트폴리오의 VECM과 VAR모형에 의한 헤지

  • 2000년 7월부터 채권시가평가의 실행으로 채권운용자들도 채권포트폴리오의 위험을 채권선물을 이용하여 통제하거나 감소시키기 위해 헤지를 하여야 한다. 이때 헤지비율을 추정하는 방법으로는 전통적 회귀분석모형, 백터오차수정모형(Vector Error Correction Model : VECM)과 VAR모형(Vector AutoRegressive Model)이 있다. 전통적인 회귀분석모형에 의하여 추정된 헤지비율은 시계열자료의 불안정성(nonstationary) 등으로 인하여 잘못 추정될 가능성이 있어 면밀한 검토와 분석 후 사용하여야 한다. 시계열자료의 불안정성으로 말미암아 야기되는 문제점들을 개선할 수 있는 모형으로서 VECM과 VAR모형이 널리 이용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 VECM과 VAR모형을 사용하여 추정된 헤지비율과 전통적 회귀분석모형을 사용하여 추정한 헤지비율을 비교하여 어떤 모형으로 추정한 헤지비율이 더 정확한지를 평가하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 즉, 본 연구는 KTB 현 선물의 헤징에 대한 연구로 2000년 1월 4일부터 2001년 7월 27일까지 385일간의 KTB 현 선물 자료와 불룸버그 국채지수를 대상으로 VECM 및 VAR모형과 전통적 회귀분석모형에 의한 헤지비율을 추정하고 각 모형의 설명력과 예측력을 비교하고자 한다. 이 연구의 실증분석 결과, KTB 현물가격과 KTB 선물가격간, 블룸버그 국채지수와 KTB 선물가격간에는 공적분 관계가 존재하며, VECM 및 VAR와 전통적 회귀분석모형을 이용하여 추정한 최적헤지비율의 크기는 대동소이(大同小異)하며, 전통적 회귀분석방법을 이용하는 것이 VECM과 VAR모형을 이용할 때 보다 설명력과 예측력이 우월한 것으로 나타났다.

Study on the Forecasting and Relationship of Busan Cargo by ARIMA and VAR·VEC (ARIMA와 VAR·VEC 모형에 의한 부산항 물동량 예측과 관련성연구)

  • More accurate forecasting of port cargo in the global long-term recession is critical for the implementation of port policy. In this study, the Busan Port container volume (export cargo and transshipment cargo) was estimated using the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the vector error correction (VEC) model considering the causal relationship between the economic scale (GDP) of Korea, China, and the U.S. as well as ARIMA, a single volume model. The measurement data was the monthly volume of container shipments at the Busan port J anuary 2014-August 2019. According to the analysis, the time series of import and export volume was estimated by VAR because it was relatively stable, and transshipment cargo was non-stationary, but it has cointegration relationship (long-term equilibrium) with economic scale, interest rate, and economic fluctuation, so estimated by the VEC model. The estimation results show that ARIMA is superior in the stationary time-series data (local cargo) and transshipment cargo with a trend are more predictable in estimating by the multivariate model, the VEC model. Import-export cargo, in particular, is closely related to the size of our country's economy, and transshipment cargo is closely related to the size of the Chinese and American economies. It also suggests a strategy to increase transshipment cargo as the size of China's economy appears to be closer than that of the U.S.

Analysis of Container Shipping Market Using Multivariate Time Series Models (다변량 시계열 모형을 이용한 컨테이너선 시장 분석)

  • In order to enhance the competitiveness of the container shipping industry and promote its development, based on the empirical analyses using multivariate time series models, this study aims to suggest a few strategies related to the dynamics of the container shipping market. It uses the vector autoregressive (VAR) and vector error correction (VEC) models as analytical methodologies. Additionally, it uses the annual trade volumes, fleets, and freight rates as the dataset. According to the empirical results, we can infer that the most exogenous variable, the trade volume, exerted the highest influence on the total dynamics of the container shipping market. Based on these empirical results, this study suggests some implications for ship investment, freight rate forecasting, and the strategies of shipping firms. Concerning ship investment, since the exogenous trade volume variable contributes most to the uncertainty of freight rates, corporate finance can be considered more appropriate for container ship investment than project finance. Concerning the freight rate forecasting, the VAR and VEC models use the past information and the cointegrating regression model assumes future information, and hence the former models are found better than the latter model. Finally, concerning the strategies of shipping firms, this study recommends the use of cycle-linked repayment scheme and services contract.

Analysis of the relationship between garlic and onion acreage response

  • Garlic and onion are staple agricultural products to Koreans and also are important with regard to agricultural producers' income. These products' acreage responses are highly correlated with each other. Therefore, it is necessary to test whether there is a cointegration relationship between garlic acreage and onion acreage when one tries to estimate the acreage response's function. Based upon the test result of cointegration, it is confirmed that there is no statistically significant cointegration relationship between garlic acreage and onion acreage. In this case, vector autoregressive model is preferred to vector error correction model. This study investigated the dynamic relationship between garlic and onion acreage responses using vector autoregressive (VAR) model. The estimated results of VAR acreage response models show that there is a statistically significant relationship between current and lagged acreage of more than one lag. Therefore, it is recommended that government should consider the long-run period's relationship of each product's acreage when it plans a policy for stabilizing the supply and demand of garlic and onion. For the price variables, garlic price only affects garlic acreage response while onion price affects not only onion acreage response but also garlic acreage response. This implies that the stabilizing policy for onion price could have bigger effects than that for garlic price stabilization.

Relation Analysis Between REITs and Construction Business, Real Estate Business, and Stock Market (리츠와 건설경기, 부동산경기, 주식시장과의 관계 분석)

  • Even though REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts) are listed on the stock market, REITs have characteristics that allow them to invest in real estate and financing for real estate development. Therefore REITs is related with stock market and construction business and real estate business. Using time-series analysis, this study analyzed REITs in relation to construction businesses, real estate businesses, and the stock market, and derived influence factor of REITs. We used the VAR (vector auto-regression) and the VECM (vector error correction model) for the time-series analysis. This study classified three steps in the analysis. First, we performed the time-series analysis between REITs and construction KOSPI(The Korea composite stock price index) and the result showed that construction KOSPI influenced REITs. Second, we analyzed the relationship between REITs and construction commencement area of the coincident construction composite index, office index and housing price index in real estate business indexes. REITs and the housing price index influence each other, although there is no causal relationship between them. Third, we analyzed the relationship between REITs and the construction permit area of the leading construction composite index. The construction permit area is influenced by REITs, although there is no causal relationship between these two indexes, REITs influenced the stock market and housing price indexes and the construction permit area of the leading composite index in construction businesses, but exerted a relatively small influence in construction starts coincident with the composite office indexes in this study.
