  • Various parameters are involved in the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. We performed various tests in order to investigate the influence of tool surface texture directionality upon the resulting friction in sheet forming processes. Four different tools were manufactured which gave us a range of roughness for both parallel and transverse texture directions. Each of the tools was examined in flat type friction tests under identical test conditions. The tool with the transverse surface texture produces significantly lower levels of friction than the tool with parallel texture direction. Considering the lubrication mechanism associated with transverse texture, one can imagine the lubricant being constantly supplied from the reservoir of the micro valley to the point of contact and hence producing the lower levels of friction seen.

  • This paper proposes a method for generating low-level geometric models with retaining salient features during decimation. Our method employs feature extraction technique for extracting feature lines defined via curvature derivatives on the model (we divide features into ridges and valleys). We add the extraction method to simplification technique (Feature Quadric Error Metric) for making coarse model with features. This paper clearly shows that experimental results have better quality and smaller geometric error than previous methods.

  • Hall factor of electrons in $\Gamma$-valley is calculated as functions of temperature, impurity concentration, and nonparabolicity of conduction valleys by taking into account the current density obtained from the Boltzmann transport equation. The dependence of the Hall factor on the temperature is clearly shown in the case of the optical phonon scattering and that on the impurity concentration is obvious in the case of the ionized impurity scattering. As the nonparabolicity of the conduction band increases, the Hall factor due to the acoustic or optic phonon scattering increases, whereas that due to the ionized impurity scattering decreases. The change of the Hall factor can be analysed in terms of the dispersion of relaxation time.

  • Door effort was calculated for a new door checker with torsion bar spring and integrated checker case by FE analysis. A hybrid checker arm which has peaks and valleys only on the upper surface was adopted to reduce noise in operation and make operation with more distinctive steps. The checker arm was modeled using shell elements to estimate both the longitudinal and the lateral resistance force by checker arm. By combining the checker arm resistance force obtained from analysis and the door self-closing force by the theoretical calculation, door effort was predicted to show the good correlation with test results. In addition the unrolling effect of roller model was investigated and a new roller type for more smooth rolling was studied.

  • Recently, many studies concern on the slip flow and slip length, which allow liquid flow to reduce drag force in microchannel. However, until now not enough investigation is performed experimentally to understand the slip flow in the superhydrophobic microchannel exhibiting riblet structures on vertical wall. Here we investigated and compared the slip flows according to the surface characteristics; hydrophilic, hydrophobic, and superhydrophobic wettabilities. Using the micro-PIV, velocity profiles can be obtained in the glass (hydrophilic), PDMS (hydrophobic), and micro-structured PDMS (superhydrophobic) microchannels. For both PDMS and superhydrophobic PDMS microchannels, we observed the slip effects showing the microscale slip lengths. Due to the micro-riblet, there are two distinctive flow characteristics on the riblet surface and the liquid meniscus in the valleys.

  • In this paper, video image segmentation algorithm based on color histogram and change detector is proposed. Color histograms are calculated from both changed region which is detected in the previous and current frame and unchanged region. With each histogram, modes and valleys are detected. Then, color vectors are calculated by averaging pixels in modes. Markers are extracted by labeling color vectors that represent modes, the watershed algorithm is applied to determine uncertain region. In growing region, the root mean square(RMS) of the distance between average pixel in marker region and adjacent pixel is used as a measure. The proposed algorithm based on color histogram and change detector segments video image fastly and effectively. And simulation results show that the proposed method determines the exact boundary between background and foreground.

  • As a supplier of ecotourism, local people are vital for its successful development of ecotourism in Less Favored Mountainous Area(LFMA). A survey was carried on to investigate the residents' attitudes toward ecotourism development. In addition, an Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) of resources for ecotourism was carried out. Major results are: First, cognition of residents fur environmentally friendly approach in tourism development, was very high (76.1 %). And appreciations of residents towards ecotourism were also high(more than 50%), Recently, the understanding of ecotourism is highly increasing. Second, ecotourism development was highly accepted(63%) as a desirable tourism development. And 65% of respondents showed willingness of participation to ecotourism development. Third, valleys were cognized as major ecotourism resources, and as a result of IPA, (unique) plant community, eco-villages, and habitats of wildlifes were in the category of 'Concentrate Here'.

  • The milling process is one of the most important metal removal processes in industry. Due to the complexities inherent to the cutter insert geometry and the milling cutter kinematics, these processes leave an analytically difficult to predict texture on the machined surface's hills and valleys. The instantaneous uncut chip cross sectional area may be estimated by the relative position between the workpiece and the cutter inserts. furthermore, since the cutting forces are proportional to the instantaneous uncut chip cross sectional area, the cutting forces in face milling operations can not be estimated easily. A new simulation program which is based upon the numerical method has been proposed to estimate the cutting force components, with the ability to predict the machined surface texture left by the face milling operation.

  • Many slope failures and debris flows were occurred in Jinbu area of Gangwon Province due to heavy rainfall of much more than 400mm in July, 2006. In the area, although about 3 years passed, valleys and gulleys keep their original form when the events happened. Field investigations were performed on Singi-ri and Bongsan-ri in Jinbu area to examine the characteristics of debris flow as well as slope failure. As the result, debris flows were classified as 3 types according to their characteristics analyzed by field investigations.
