Current guidance considers that uniaxially loaded specimen with a deep crack is used for the determination of the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. However, reactor pressure vessel is under biaxial loading in real and the existence of deep crack is not probable through periodic in-service-inspection. The elastic stress intensity factor and the elastic-plastic J-integral which were used for crack-tip stress field and fracture mechanics assessment parameters. The difference of the loading condition and crack geometry can significantly influence on these parameters. Thus, a constraint effect caused by differences between standard specimens and a real structure can over/underestimate the fracture toughness, and it affects the results of the structural integrity assessment, consequentially. The present paper investigates the constraint effects by evaluating the master curve $T_0$ reference temperature of PCVN (Pre-cracked Charpy V-Notch) and small scale cruciform specimens which was designed to simulate biaxial loading condition with shallow crack through the fracture toughness tests and 3-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses. Based on the finite element analysis results, the fracture toughness values of a small scale cruciform specimen were estimated, and the geometry-dependent factors of the cruciform specimen considered in the present study were determined. Finally, the transferability of the test results of these specimens was discussed.

Abstract Over the last several decades, crop production in the United States increased largely due to the extensive use of animal waste and fertilizers as plant nutrient supplements, and pesticides for crops pests and weed control. Without the application of animal waste best management, the use of animal waste can result in nonpoint source pollution from agricultural land area. In order to increase nutrient levels and decrease contamination from agricultural lands, nonpoint source pollution is responsible for water quality degradation. Nonpoint source pollutants such as animal waste, ferilizers, and pesticides are transported primarily through runoff from agricultural areas. Nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, can be a major water quality problem because they cause eutrophic algae growth. In 1985, it was presented that Watershed/Water Quality Monitoring for Evaluation BMP Effectiveness was implemented for Nomini Creek Watershed, located in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The watershed is predominantly agricultural and has an aerial extent of 1505 ha of land, with 43% under cropland, 54% under woodland, and 3% as homestead and roads. Rainfall data was collected at the watershed from raingages located at sites PNI through PN 7. Streams at stations QN I and QN2 were being measured with V-notch weirs. Water levels at the stream was measured using an FW-l Belfort (Friez FWl). The water quality monitoring system was designed to provide comprehensive assessment of the quality of storm runoff and baseflow as influenced by changes in landuse, agronomic, and cultural practices ill the watershed. As this study was concerned with the Nomini Creek Watershed, the separation of storm runoff and baseflow measured at QNI and QN2 was given by the master depletion curve method, and the loadings of baseflow and storm runoff for TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) were analyzed from 1987 through 1989. The results were studied for the best management practices to reduce contamination and loss of nutrients, (e.g., total nitrogen and total phosphorus) by nonpoint source pollution from agricultural lands.

Reliability evaluation of welded structures by mechanical testing of weld heat-affected zones (HAZs) has become general practice throughout the world. HAZs of steel welded Joints show a gradient of microstructure from the fusion line to the unaffected base metal. This study is concerned a correlation between the microstructural change and the fracture characteristics in HAZs of both seam and girth welds of API 5L X65 pipeline steel, which is generally used for natural gas transmission pipelines in Korea. The focus in this study is the investigation of macroscopic fracture behavior of the various regions within HAZ. Changes in microstructure and toughness were observed using actual HAZ specimens. To evaluate the macroscopic toughness of actual HAZ, Charpy V-notch impact test and CTOD test were performed.

It is very important to evaluate material degradation like temper and carbide embrittlements to secure the reliable and efficient operational conditions and to prevent brittle failure in service. The extent of material deterioration can be accurately evaluated by mechanical test such as impact test or creep test. But it is almost impossible to sample a large specimen from in-service plants. Thus, the material degradation evaluation by a non-destructive method is earnestly required. Recently the non-destructive test technique which uses the grain boundary etching characteristics owing to the variation of material structures has been proposed. However the program for material degradation evaluation using the grain boundary etching method(GEM) in Windows 98 domain doesnt be developed now. The aims of this paper are to develop the program and to complete the new master curve equations for the evaluation of material degradation on in-serviced high temperature components.
The grooving corrosion is caused mainly by the different microstructures between the matrix and weld which is formed during the rapid heating and cooling cycle in welding. By this localized corrosion reaction of pipes, it evolves economic problems such as the early damage of industrial facilities and pipe lines of apartment, and water pollution. So lots of researches were carried out already about grooving corrosion mechanism of ERW carbon steel pipe but there is seldom study for water hammer happened by fluid phenomenon and corrosion rate by flow velocity. In this study, the analysis based on hydrodynamic and fracture mechanics was carried out. ANSYS, FLUENT and STAR-CD were used for confirmation of flow phenomenon and stress on the pipe. As the results, fatigue failure is able to be happened by water hammer and grooving corrosion rate is increased cause by turbulent. Grooving corrosion is happened on the pipe, then friction loss of fluid is occurred from corroded part. Erosion can be happened enough in corroded region of microscopic size that wear "V" form. Also pipe is able to be damaged by water hammer effects because of corroded region is general acting as a notch effects. Corrosion depth was more than half of total thickness, it can be damaged from water hammer pressure.

The purpose of this thesis is to search for the determination method of pumping rates in the existing tube wells for irrigation. Pumping tests were carried out for the twelve test tube wells which were selected in the provinces of Kyounggi, Kangwon, Chungbuk and Chungnam. The depths, static water levels, pumping levels, drawdowns and yields of tube wells were measured in the pumping tests, and a centrifugal pump with 3 inches diameter, a 5 HP motor and a 90$^{\circ}$ V-notch were used in the pumping tests. The average coefficient of transmissibility calculated by Chow's and Jacob's methods is 0.0336 square meter per second, and the average pumping rate calculated by Thiem's, Smreker's, Brinkhaus' and Theis' formulae, is 919 cubic meter per day, Therefore, the ground water storage in the test areas is comparatively abundant. Correlation between pumping rates and depths of tube wells is not in existence. Also, correlation between pumping rates and the thickness of aquifer is not found in this experiment. This shows that the depths of some tube wells are deep and their thicknesses of aquifer are thick, but their ground water storages are poor, and that the depths of some tube wells are shallow and their thicknesses of aquifer are thin, but their ground water storages are abundant. It seems that the test tube wells are influenced by the peculiar characteristics that the ground water in the test areas is free ground water in alluvium layer closely related with surface water. As drawdown increases, pumping rate decreases, and as the coefficient of transmissibility increases, pumping rate also increases. Namely, there are negative correlation between pumping rate and drawdown, and positive correlation between pumping rate and the coefficient of transmissibility. Judging from the results of the pumping tests in these tests areas, the pumping rate calculated by the formula, {{{{ { Q}_{m } =Q { ( { { S}_{ m} } over { TRIANGLE S } )}^{ { 2} over {3 } } }}}} used traditionally, is likely to be higher than real pumping rates. The formula, {{{{ { Q}_{m } =Q { { H}^{ 2} } over { (2H- TRIANGLE S) TRIANGLE S} }}}} derived from Thiem's theory, is looked upon as the reasonable one to detemine pumping rates in the existing tube wells for irrigation.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of resin and filler type on the fracture toughness of light-activated composites. Experimental composites were prepared using urethane tetramethacrylate(UTMA) and bisphenol glycidylmethacrylate(Bis-GMA) monomers and five different types of silica fillers. Fracture toughness was measured by a single edge V-notched beam(SEVNB) method, which was discussed from ASTM E399-78. Rectangular bars of $2.5{\times}5{\times}26mm$ were prepared with experimental composites and a notch about 2.25mm deep was carved at the center of the long axis of the specimen using a dental diamond disk driven by a dental micro engine. The flexural test was carried out at a crosshead speed of 0.05mm/min and fracture surfaces were observed under scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The fracture toughness values of UTMA-based composites were relatively higher than those of Bis-GMA-based composites. 2. The highest fracture toughness value was observed in the UTMA-based composite containing the $1.5{\mu}m$-spherical fillers. 3 Aging in the distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 10 days showed the increase of fracture toughness, which was severer in the Bis-GMA-based composites than those of UTMA-based composites. 4. The AE amplitude occurring during the fracture toughness tests was the highest at the point of macroscopic fracture.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the blood supply to the maxillary sinus in Koreans using computed tomography of the lateral wall of the sinus, and to analyze the data according to demographic data, and to compare our results with previously published research. Methods: One hundred and three patients (males 51, females 52) who visited the dental clinic were evaluated. We investigated the canals with cone-beam computed tomography, and measured the diameter and length from the bony notch of the vascular canal at the lateral wall of the sinus to each of the reference planes. Results: Most types of vascular canal were type I & II (total 72.2%) which were driving through inside the sinus wall. Type IV, V were frequently investigated in 1st premolar and 2nd molar. Mean height; from anterior nasal spine-posterior nasal spine plane to vascular canal was 5.56 mm in 1st premolar, 2.11 mm in 2nd premolar, 0.98 mm in 1st molar, 4.32 mm in 2nd molar; from the basal layer of the sinus was 4.93 mm in 1st premolar, 5.00 mm in 2nd premolar, 6.05 mm in 1st molar, 7.91 mm in 2nd molar; and from alveolar crest, 20.80 mm in 1st premolar, 16.57 mm in 2nd premolar, 14.01 mm in 1st molar, 16.17 mm in 2nd molar. The mean height of the vascular canal of each reference plane showed no significant difference between sex, site (left or right) and age. The mean diameters of the canals were 1.76 mm in male, and 1.50 mm in female. Diameter decreased with age, and tooth site (from 1st premolar to 2nd molar). Conclusion: These results show that the mean diameter of the vascular canal of the maxillary sinus varies according to age, sex, and tooth site, but that the mean height of canal had no significant difference based on these three factors.
The outcome of primary surgery for cleft lip is judged by its effects on the quality of oro-facial function and development. Many surgical techniques have been tried to obtain better results, however, Delaire introduced a technique of functional closure of the lip and nose, based on the findings of no true hypoplasia in the tissues either side of the cleft. In a seven-month-old Asian male patient with unilateral incomplete cleft lip, we carried out the primary closure by modified Delaire's technique. With no alveolar bone graft, the vertical incision on the nasal base was omitted in this patient because of his acceptable symmetry of nose. Also, a small Z plasty was added on the non-cleft side. The V-shaped incisions, whose notch was located on each side of the red vermilion, were designed and beveled incisions were performed for the rehabilitation of lip length and thickness, considering the postoperative wound contracture. We assured that this modification of Delaire's technique could be applied for various cases of primary closure of incomplete cleft lip.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the destructive effects of biofilm formation and/or biocorrosive activity of 6 different oral microorganisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three different heat polymerized acrylic resins (Ivocap Plus, Lucitone 550, QC 20) were used to prepare three different types of samples. Type "A" samples with "V" type notch was used to measure the fracture strength, "B" type to evaluate the surfaces with scanning electron microscopy and "C" type for quantitative biofilm assay. Development and calculation of biofilm covered surfaces on denture base materials were accomplished by SEM and quantitative biofilm assay. According to normality assumptions ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis was selected for statistical analysis (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. Significant differences were obtained among the adhesion potential of 6 different microorganisms and there were significant differences among their adhesion onto 3 different denture base materials. Compared to the control groups after contamination with the microorganisms, the three point bending test values of denture base materials decreased significantly (P<.05); microorganisms diffused at least 52% of the denture base surface. The highest median quantitative biofilm value within all the denture base materials was obtained with P. aeruginosa on Lucitone 550. The type of denture base material did not alter the diffusion potential of the microorganisms significantly (P>.05). CONCLUSION. All the tested microorganisms had destructive effect over the structure and composition of the denture base materials.
