  • Purpose: Underground utility tunnel is facility that is jointly house infrastructure such as electricity, water and gas in city, causing condensation problems due to lack of airflow. This paper aims to prevent electricity leakage fires caused by condensation by detecting whether the control panel door in the underground utility tunnel is open using a deep learning model. Method: YOLO, a deep learning object recognition model, is trained to recognize the opening and closing of the control panel door using video data taken by a robot patrolling the underground utility tunnel. To improve the recognition rate, image augmentation is used. Result: Among the image enhancement techniques, we compared the performance of the YOLO model trained using mosaic with that of the YOLO model without mosaic, and found that the mosaic technique performed better. The mAP for all classes were 0.994, which is high evaluation result. Conclusion: It was able to detect the control panel even when there were lights off or other objects in the underground cavity. This allows you to effectively manage the underground utility tunnel and prevent disasters.

  • Purpose: This paper proposes a method detecting the falling of a maintenance worker in the underground utility tunnel, by applying deep learning techniques using CCTV video, and evaluates the applicability of the proposed method to the worker monitoring of the utility tunnel. Method: Each rule was designed to detect the falling of a maintenance worker by using the inference results from pre-trained YOLOv5 and OpenPose models, respectively. The rules were then integrally applied to detect worker falls within the utility tunnel. Result: Although the worker presence and falling were detected by the proposed model, the inference results were dependent on both the distance between the worker and CCTV and the falling direction of the worker. Additionally, the falling detection system using YOLOv5 shows superior performance, due to its lower dependence on distance and fall direction, compared to the OpenPose-based. Consequently, results from the fall detection using the integrated dual deep learning model were dependent on the YOLOv5 detection performance. Conclusion: The proposed hybrid model shows detecting an abnormal worker in the utility tunnel but the improvement of the model was meaningless compared to the single model based YOLOv5 due to severe differences in detection performance between each deep learning model

  • Since the domestic utility tunnels were built mainly in the development project of the new city, they are all in the form of cut-and-cover box tunnel. But, in the case of overseas construction of utility tunnels for existing urban areas, the bored tunnel types are mainly adopted. It is reasonable to install bored tunnels in a downtown area because it is difficult to block the roads or install bypass roads due to heavy traffic and civil complaints. In order to activate the utility tunnels in bored type, it is necessary to secure optimized cross-sectional design technology considering the optimal supplying capacity and mutual influencing factors (Thermal Interference, electrolytic corrosion, efficiency of the maintenance, etc.) of utilities (power cables, telecommunication cables, water pipes, etc.). The optimal cross-section design method for bored utility tunnels is ultimately to derive the optimal arrangement technique for the utilities. In order to develop the design methods, firstly, the cases of tunnel cross-section (Shield TBM, Conventional Tunneling) in overseas shall be investigated to analyze the characteristics of the installation of utilities in the section and installation of auxiliary facilities, It is necessary to sort out and analyze the criteria related to the inner cross-section design (arrangement) presented in the standards and guidelines.

  • Since the direct and indirect damage caused by the fire in the underground utility tunnel will cause great damage to society as a whole, it is necessary to make efforts to prevent and control it in advance. The most of the fires that occur in cables are caused by short circuits, earth leakage, ignition due to over-current, overheating of conductor connections, and ignition due to sparks caused by breakdown of insulators. In order to find the cause of fire at an early stage due to the characteristics of the underground utility tunnel and to prevent disasters and safety accidents, we are constantly managing it with a detection system using image analysis and making efforts. Among them, a case of developing a fire detection system using CCTV-based deep learning image analysis technology has been reported. However, CCTV needs to be supplemented because there are blind spots. Therefore, we would like to develop a high-performance acoustic-based deep learning model that can prevent fire by detecting the spark sound before spark occurs. In this study, we propose a method that can collect sound in underground utility tunnel environments using microphone sensor through development and experiment of prototype module. After arranging an acoustic sensor in the underground utility tunnel with a lot of condensation, it verifies whether data can be collected in real time without malfunction.

  • In this paper, a study was conducted on the method of establishing the master plan standard for rational decision-making about utility tunnel construction in the existing urban. In the previous study, the optimal route was selected by the feasibility assessment. However, in order to increase the objectivity of the installation conditions of the utility tunnel in the master plan standard, comprehensive evaluation of the results by feasibility and economics analysis calculates the overall ranking for all sections analyzed. In addition, based on the results of the comprehensive evaluation, a method for establishing a mid·long term investment plan was introduced after reviewing the project to be conducted in the region. Additionally, in order to review the establishment of the standard suggested in the paper, an analysis was conducted by applying the master plan procedure to the northwestern urban zone of seoul.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to determine whether to install the accommodation facility of the multi-utility tunnel more effectively in the basic planning phase, and to set up an evaluation system to determine the configuration and kind of accommodation facility. For the configuration of the accommodation facility, 98 alternatives were analyzed for 7 accommodation facility. For the evaluation system of the accommodation facility, index related to feasibility and economic in basic planning phase were selected. The evaluation system classified as spatial, effective, and cost evaluation was presented reflecting the selected index, and AHP analysis was performed for weight setting. The results of this study will be helpful for users including designers to shorten the time and increase the efficiency in the process of determining accommodation facility of the multi-utility tunnel in basic planning phase.

  • The existing monitoring and control systems of utility-pipe conduit (power tunnel, cable tunnel etc) have established communication lines using optical fiber, leaky coaxial cable (LCX), and several kinds of control cable. Due to the properties of the used media, the cost of equipment is considerably high and the maintenance of the system is difficult. Also, the term of carrying out is long so that the extension of the system is in difficulty. Now it is desirable to adopt Power Line Communication (hereinafter, PLC) technology in the monitoring and control systems and use the existing low-voltage power-line for lamplight as communication line. This will lead the reduction of the construction cost and the easy maintenance of the system. In this paper, we research the characteristics of PLC in conduit, design and manufacture the field test system, and analyze the performance of the system by field test. Then, we introduce the reliable monitoring and control system of utility-pipe conduit using PLC.

  • Utility tunnels have been employed in Korea since the 1970s and start to make trouble with structural safety and serviceability. Recently, tunnel enlargement has consequently been proposed due to the impending problems. However there are little study on box type utility tunnels except traffic tunnels. A 2D finite element analysis was conducted to evaluate ground behavior which depends on enlargement size and stiffness by one-side enlargement of the utility tunnel. Settlement scale increased with larger enlargement size and less stiff ground conditions. The observed settlement characteristics due to enlargement are similar to that suggested by Clough & Schmidt (1981). The settlement width is more affected by enlargement size than ground condition.

  • The seismic deformation method is conventionally used as a seismic design for a multi-utility tunnel in Korea. In the seismic deformation method, the soil ground's natural period is one of the most critical factors for calculating the ground displacement using cosine functions. Correction factors for the natural period and shear wave velocity have been used to consider the non-linearity of dynamic soil properties. However, the correction factors have been issued because the correction factors have not been sufficiently studied to consider Korea's regional conditions. This paper aims to evaluate the natural periods for the seismic deformation method considering Korea's ground conditions. Ground response analysis was performed using seven real earthquake records on twelve sites with different soil conditions where actual multi-utility tunnels are installed. As a result, natural periods of the sites were analyzed and new correction factors were proposed according to seismic performance and Korea's regional conditions.

  • A reinforced concrete pedestrian tunnel is constructed under a four-track surface railway. Heavy rainfall and soil exposure to drying lead to soil with different water content throughout the year. A railway is an open utility that is subject to rainfall without control on the quantity of the water on it and when there is a tunnel under a railway, the water content of the soil around the tunnel is very influential. This research shows the effects of change of water content in the soil around a pedestrian tunnel under a four-track surface railway. The pedestrian tunnel and the soil block around the tunnel are modeled in 3D by the FEM and are studied under the vibrations induced by the moving trains on the four-track surface railway for different soil water contents and the effects of the soil water content on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel and the surrounding soil are demonstrated.
