Push Service Technique based on Semantic Web for Personalized Services (개인화서비스를 위한 시맨틱웹 기반 푸시서비스 기법)

  • Many personalized services that provide users with adaptive information according to users' preferences have been researched and developed. Push services are especially expected to be more economic impact because push services satisfy user's potential needs even if the user does not require anything. In this paper, we propose Semantic Web approach in order to enhance the performance of push services. Our approach provides infrastructure to recommend contents based on semantic association by enabling information of contents and user preferences to be described on service-specific ontologies that reflect features of each service. In addition, our approach can recommend users with adaptive information based on information represented in our description model. Our approach enables information of contents and user preferences to be described with rich expressiveness, and it provides semantic interoperability.

  • Most recommendation systems recommend the products or other information satisfying preferences of users on the basis of the users' previous profile information and other information related to product searches and purchase of users visiting web sites. This study aims to apply these application categories to e-mail more necessary to users. The E-Mail System has the strong personality so that there will be some problems even if e-mails are automatically classified by category through the learning on the basis of the personal rules. In consideration with this aspect, we need the semi-automatic system enabling both automatic classification and recommendation method to enhance the satisfaction of users. Accordingly, this paper uses two approaches as the solution against the misclassification that the users consider as the accuracy of classification itself using the dynamic threshold in Bayesian Learning Algorithm and the second one is the methodological approach using the recommendation agent enabling the users to make the final decision.

Emotional reactions of users for the skin-tone variations of portrait photography (인물 사진의 피부 톤 변화에 대한 감성 반응)

  • The skin-tone in portrait photography is one of the most sensitive parts that need retouching by a photographer. To investigate the emotional reactions related to users' preferences for the skin-tone variations in portrait photography, two experiments were conducted. The first experiment included JND(Just Noticeable Difference) test to determine the general distribution of preferences with many photographs that varied in phases up to an extreme one, as a result, preferences for the brightest skin-tone and the red or magenta one were found. Based on the first experiment, we reduced the number of samples by adjusting their brightness to the brightest phase constantly. To intensify the second experiment, we reduced the number of the other colored samples to only one and made samples for five phases from green to magenta, namely the most preferred skin-tone in the first experiment. In the second experiment, the common preference for a neutral skin-tone and the partial difference between the two gender groups were found. In conclusion, the users' preference for a particular skin-tone was positively affected by emotions such as 'happiness' or 'comfortable'. With this investigation, we compiled some statistically meaningful facts to confirm that the preferences of the users depend positively on controlling the skin-tone in portrait photography.

On the Scale in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Facebook vs. Snapchat

  • This research aims to analyse the practices adopted by social media users in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), specifically users of Facebook and Snapchat. To collect data from participants, a questionnaire was used, generating 915 responses. The analysis of the data shows a clear preference for Snapchat over Facebook in the KSA, where 89% of the participants have accounts on Snapchat compared to 66% of them with accounts on Facebook. Moreover, the preference for Snapchat over Facebook has been clearly shown in the daily usage of participants, where 83% of those with Snapchat accounts can be described as very active users. They have accessed their Snapchat accounts at least once a day compared to only 15% of Facebook users. Different reasons were provided by the participants explaining the practices they adopted. We believe that such research could help social media applications' designers and policy makers to understand the behaviour of users in the KSA when using social media applications and the rationale behind their behaviour and preferences. This understanding could help improve the performance of current applications and new ones.

How do multilevel privacy controls affect utility-privacy trade-offs when used in mobile applications?

  • In existing mobile computing environments, users need to choose between their privacy and the services that they can receive from an application. However, existing mobile platforms do not allow users to perform such trade-offs in a fine-grained manner. In this study, we investigate whether users can effectively make utility-privacy trade-offs when they are provided with a multilevel privacy control method that allows them to recognize the different quality of service that they will receive from an application by limiting the disclosure of their private information in multiple levels. We designed a research model to observe users' utility-privacy trade-offs in accordance with the privacy control methods and other factors such as the trustworthiness of an application, quality level of private information, and users' privacy preferences. We conducted a user survey with 516 participants and found that, compared with the existing binary privacy controls, both the service utility and the privacy protection levels were significantly increased when the users used the multilevel privacy control method.

The Effect of Congruency between User Participation and Producer Response on User Generated Content (컨텐츠 유통 플랫폼에서 이용자 참여와 생산자 반응의 적합성 효과에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose - This study's objective is to analyze the content of the communications between users and producers based on the construal level theory. User generated content refers to content created in an online-based service where users and producers communicate interactively with each other. In a user generated content platform, the messages sent and received between the many players, the users and producers who use the content, may be analyzed at the psychological level based on construal level theory. Research design, data, and methodology - This study gathered user and producer participation through a snow-bowling sampling method. The data analyzed includes 125 video clips and 2,912 comments. The period of the data collection was from September 2014 to December 2014. The collected data was analyzed using a t-test and two-way ANOVA. Results - This study obtained the following research results. First, users who were a short social distance from producers responded to user participatory activities stated in concrete language rather than abstract language. In contrast, users who were at a longer social distance from producers tended to respond to the content requesting user participation through abstract language. Second, if users and producers were at a short social distance from each other, user preference increased more when a producer response to user participation was expressed concretely rather than when it was expressed abstractly. In contrast, if the users were at a longer social distance, users' preferences increased more when producer response was expressed abstractly rather than when it was expressed concretely. Conclusion - This study found that the effect of suitability, in which the social distance and the content were in congruence at the construal level, could be observed. Therefore, based on this, academic and practical implications were drawn. The three main insights of the study are as follows. First, firms can use psychological factors to analyze the message content of users in their distribution platforms. This study reveals managerial implications for marketing managers who want to take make use of this analysis of user and producer communications. This study indicates that the main factors include the concrete and abstract scores and social distance between users and producers. Second, we also provide the strategic guidelines to maximizing user preferences and other outcomes. The main dependent variable in this study is the user preference shift; the variable increases through the congruence effect; and the construal level is determined by the social distance between the users and producers and the type of producer response. The outcomes here from users can be utilized to develop several systemic strategies. One process to use the outcomes could be: (1) firms could measure the users and producers social distance; (2) calculate the concreteness or abstractness of the messages; and, (3) predict the user preference outcomes by the congruence between user and producer social distance and the abstractness or concreteness of the message content.

File Format Design for Interactive Music Service

  • This letter describes a file format designed for interactive music service where users are able to recompose music based on their own preferences. The proposed design utilizes the flexible features of the ISO base media file format (ISO/IEC 14496-12, ISO-BMFF). The techniques offered in the proposed file format enable compact storage and efficient preset management, allowing users to recompose music with ease and convenience. Additionally, an implementation scheme for an interactive music player is shown along with its results.

  • Customer product reviews have become great influencers of purchase decision making. To assist potential customers, online stores provide various ways to sort customer reviews. Different methods have been developed to identify and recommend useful reviews to customers, primarily using feedback provided by customers about the helpfulness of reviews. Most of the methods consider the preferences of all users to determine whether reviews are helpful, and all users receive the same recommendations.

A Study of Relationship between Dataveillance and Online Privacy Protection Behavior under the Advent of Big Data Environment (빅데이터 환경 형성에 따른 데이터 감시 위협과 온라인 프라이버시 보호 활동의 관계에 대한 연구)

  • Big Data environment is established by accumulating vast amounts of data as users continuously share and provide personal information in online environment. Accordingly, the more data is accumulated in online environment, the more data is accessible easily by third parties without users' permissions compared to the past. By utilizing strategies based on data-driven, firms recently make it possible to predict customers' preferences and consuming propensity relatively exactly. This Big Data environment, on the other hand, establishes 'Dataveillance' which means anybody can watch or control users' behaviors by using data itself which is stored online. Main objective of this study is to identify the relationship between Dataveillance and users' online privacy protection behaviors. To achieve it, we first investigate perceived online service efficiency; loss of control on privacy; offline surveillance; necessity of regulation influences on users' perceived threats which is generated by Dataveillance.

Default Voting using User Coefficient of Variance in Collaborative Filtering System (협력적 여과 시스템에서 사용자 변동 계수를 이용한 기본 평가간 예측)

  • In collaborative filtering systems most users do not rate preferences; so User-Item matrix shows great sparsity because it has missing values for items not rated by users. Generally, the systems predict the preferences of an active user based on the preferences of a group of users. However, default voting methods predict all missing values for all users in User-Item matrix. One of the most common methods predicting default voting values tried two different approaches using the average rating for a user or using the average rating for an item. However, there is a problem that they did not consider the characteristics of items, users, and the distribution of data set. We replace the missing values in the User-Item matrix by the default noting method using user coefficient of variance. We select the threshold of user coefficient of variance by using equations automatically and determine when to shift between the user averages and item averages according to the threshold. However, there are not always regular relations between the averages and the thresholds of user coefficient of variances in datasets. It is caused that the distribution information of user coefficient of variances in datasets affects the threshold of user coefficient of variance as well as their average. We decide the threshold of user coefficient of valiance by combining them. We evaluate our method on MovieLens dataset of user ratings for movies and show that it outperforms previously default voting methods.
