  • The monthly-average meteorological data, in particular, the monthly average daily terrestrial horizontal insolation are required for designing solar thermal energy systems. In this paper, the dynamic thermal performance of a flat plate solar collector system is numerically investigated through a year from the monthly average insolation data in Seoul. For a specified data set of solar collector system, the dynamic behaviors of total solar radiation on the tilted collector surfaces, heat loss from the collector system, useful energy and collector efficiency are analyzed from January to December by a mathematical simulation model. In addition, the monthly average daily total solar radiation, useful energy, and daily collector efficiencies through a year are estimated. The simulated results show that the average total radiation is highest in March and the useful energy is highest in October, while the total radiation and the collector efficiency are lowest in July.

  • Predicting building energy use can be useful to evaluate its energy performance. This study proposed empirical approach for predicting building energy use with regression analysis. For the empirical analysis, simple regression models were developed based on the historical energy consumption data as a function of daily outside temperature, the predicting equations were derived for different operational modes and day types, then the equations were applied for predicting energy use in a building. BY selecting a real building as a case study, the feasibilities of the empirical approach for predicting building energy use were examined. The results showed that empirical approach with regression analysis was fairly reliable by demonstrating prediction accuracy of $pm10%$ compared with the actual energy consumption data. It was also verified that the prediction by regression models could be simple and fairly accurate. Thus, it is anticipated that the empirical approach will be useful and reliable tool for many purposes: retrofit savings analysis by estimating energy usage in an existing building or the diagnosis of the building operational problems with real time analysis.

  • Gd-157 material has very large neutron capture cross section in the thermal region. So it is very useful to shield material for thermal neutrons. Futhermore, in the neutron capture experiment and calculation, the neutron absorption and scattering are very important. Especially these effects are conspicuous in the resonance energy region and below the thermal energy region. In the case of very narrow resonance, the effect of scattering is to be more considerable factor. In the present study, we obtained energy dependent neutron absorption ratios of natural indium in energy region from 0.003 to 100 keV by MCNP-4B Code. The coefficients for neutron absorption was calculated for circular type and 1 mm thickness. In the lower energy region, neutron absorption is larger than higher region, because of large capture cross section (1/v). Furthermore it seems very different neutron absorption in the large resonance energy region. These results are very useful to decide the thickness of sample and shielding materials.

  • The three years Performance of a liquid type solar heating system has been determined for a system which has been determined for a system which has been operating continuously since 1976 in Seoul with no serious maintenance. A flat plate collector is used to transform incident solar radiation into thermal energy. This energy is stored if the form of sensible energy and used as needed to supply the space heating loads. An electric auxiliary heaters are provided to supply energy for space heating load when the energy in the storage tank is depleted. The ratio of useful collected solar heat divided by the total solar radiation on the collector was obtained about 84 per cent. It is also obtained the relation between ratio of solar collector area to the heating area and the ratio of useful collected solar energy to the heating load for the useful design data. A comparison between the measured and simulated results with the solar space heating system is described. Hour by hour simulation is made on unsteady state basis using the system parameters and meteorological data at the experiment site. The result of comparison turned out satisfactory for the solar heating system, though the simulation was formed somewhat higher than by experimental.

  • Because sensor nodes have limited resources in wireless sensor networks, data aggregation can efficiently reduce communication overhead and extend the network lifetime. Although many existing methods are particularly useful for data aggregation applications, they incur unbalanced communication cost and waste lots of sensors' energy. In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving, energy-saving data aggregation scheme (EBPP). Our method can efficiently reduce the communication cost and provide privacy preservation to protect useful information. Meanwhile, the balanced energy of the nodes can extend the network lifetime in our scheme. Through many simulation experiments, we use several performance criteria to evaluate the method. According to the simulation and analysis results, this method can more effectively balance energy dissipation and provide privacy preservation compared to the existing schemes.

  • Static compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) have advantages such as ease for fabrication and lower cost compared with other concentrating collectors. In this study, thermal performance analysis of CPC employing heat storage tank was carried out. The clearness index and capacity of heat storage tank are taken as the main parameters for numerical simulation. The effects of the parameters on the hourly and daily system performances ncluding the useful energy, heat loss, and collector efficiency were numerically investigated. Results showed that the system has a potential for efficient recovery of solar thermal energy.

  • The objective of this work is to analyze the variation in energy performance for each flat plate collector connected in series. In this study, it was assumed that solar water heating system with annual solar fraction of 60% was installed in an office building in Seoul, South Korea. The transient energy performance corresponding to four cases, which are selected using different solar radiation and outdoor air temperature, is studied by analyzing the variation in outlet temperature, solar useful heat gain, and thermal efficiency of each collector. It is observed that the useful heat gain and the collector efficiency decrease continuously, and outlet temperature increases when increasing the number of collector connected in series. The long-term performance is assessed by evaluating the thermal efficiency of each collector for two solar radiation conditions ranging from 780 to $820W/m^2$ and from 380 to $420W/m^2$. It is found that the differences between the intercept and slope of the efficiency curves for first and eighth collectors are 3.68% and 6.74% for solar radiation of $800{\pm}20W/m^2$ and 8.57% and 12.90% for solar radiation of $400{\pm}20W/m^2$, respectively. In addition, it is interesting to note that annual useful heat gain and collector efficiency are reduced with similar rate of about 6.13% when increasing the collector area by connecting the collectors in series.

  • The benefits of thermal stratification in sensible heat storage were investigated for residential solar applications. The effect of increased thermal useful efficiency of hot water stored in an actual storage tank due to stratification has been discussed and illustrated through experimental data and computer simulation, which were taken by changing dynamic and geometric parameters. When the flow rate was 8 liter/min and ${\Delta}T=40^{\circ}C$ was $40^{\circ}C$, the useful efficiency(${\eta}_u$) was about 90% in case of using a distributor, but not using a distributor the useful efficiency(${\eta}_u$) was about 82%. So these kinds of distributor would be recommendable for a hot water storage system and residential solar energy application to increase useful efficiency(${\eta}_u$). In the case of the uniform circular distributor, when the flow rate was 8 liter/min partial mixing was decreased and a stable stratification was obtained. Furthermore, if the distrbutor was manufactured so that the flow is to be the same from all perforations in order to enhance stratification, it might be predicted that further stable stratification and higher useful efficiency(${\eta}_u$) are obtainable.
