  • In this article, the challenges of Iran and the world are compared to the management of available water resources. Especially in recent years, according to the climatic changes that have occurred all over the world and the changes in the rainfall patterns, and the corresponding changes in the management of water resources, the situation in Iran is being investigated. According to the available information, the amount of water on the planet is estimated to be about 1.36 billion cubic kilometers, which covers about 71% of the earth's surface. However, about 97.5% of the water in the world is salty ocean water and only 2.5% is fresh. Therefore, only 0.025% of the total water on the planet will be usable. According to United Nations statistics, 61% of the world's water consumption is in agriculture, 23% in industry, and 8% for drinking, household, and health purposes. Considering the large number of dams in Iran, only 6% of all dams are used to produce electric energy, which is a significant difference compared to the world (approximately 19%).

  • This study investigates the impact of morphological change on the physical habitat simulation. For this, CCHE2D model is used for the hydraulic analysis including the morphological change, and the physical habitat suitability is assessed with habitat suitability curves. The model is applied to a 2.5km long reach downstream of the Goesan Dam, from Sujeon Bridge to Daesu Weir. Flow data of discharge and stage in July, 2006 are used in the computation. The numerical model is verified by means of comparison with the measured water surface elevation data, and the variation of the river bed is not verified in this study. Adult Zacco platypus is chosen for the dominant species. Physical habitat simulations result in composite habitat suitability and weighted usable area for drought, low, normal, and averaged-wet flows. The simulation results indicate that the composite suitability index increased at reaches right downstream of the Sujeon Bridge and around the bend. This also increased weighted usable area by 5.4-11.3%.

  • According to climate change, deficiency of usable land, large water portion of the Earth surface, and improvement of income level, floating architecture is emerging as a strong & attractive alternative. The aim of this study is to suggest some related applying ways for new building projects around waterside. New paradigm of architecture can be described as a new model and/or system of architecture with new concept and Zeitgeist like sustainability and green building. Floating building is already a new paradigm of architecture comparing with the preconception of building only on the land and current building regulations. New paradigm features from the sample projects can be summarized as new concepts of building, application of various renewable energy resources(water, solar, wind), modular construction, use of local raw material, dual purpose usage, long term and relocatable usage, and special building materials for green building.

  • Since the starting reactor used for reducing inrush current of high voltage induction motor applies an electric current only when it is at the stage of transition, it gets lots of electrical or mechanical stress. In this aspect, the reliability on the starting reactor is very important because the reactor-relating-accident takes 80% of all the accident concerned with high voltage motor starting panel. In this study, we conducted an insulation test of starting reactor of high voltage induction motor of intake pumping station to the Seoul area And the result from this study was used as data for determining whether it's still usable or not.

  • Electrodialysis (ED) is used in wastewater treatment, during the processing and recovery of beneficial materials, to produce usable water. In this study, sulfate and chlorine ions, which are the anions majorly used for electroplating, were studied as factors affecting the recovery of copper, nickel and water from wastewater by electrodialysis. Although the removal rates of copper and nickel ions were slightly higher with the use of chlorine ions than of sulfate ions, the removal efficiencies were above 99.9% under all experimental conditions. The metal ions of the plating wastewater flowed through the ion exchange membrane of the diluate tank and the concentrate tank while all the water moved together due to electro-osmosis. The migration of water from the diluate tank to the concentrate tank was higher in the presence of a monovalent chloride ion compared to that of a divalent sulfate ion. When sulfate was the anion used, the recoveries of copper and nickel increased by about 25% and 30%, respectively, as compared to the chloride ion. Therefore, when divalent ions such as sulfate are present in the electrodialysis, it is possible to reduce the movement amount of water and highly concentrate the copper and nickel in the plating wastewater.

  • Mine drainage from coal mines is mostly acidic, polluted and/or contaminated, even if its quantity has increased substantially during recent days. This causes two kinds of problems arising at mining districts; one is the environmental disruption and the other is insufficient water supply for living, employee's bathing and industrial purposes. In order to mitigate the aforementioned problems, a specific equipment of Korea type for mine drainage purification has been developed and its prototype manufactured, followed by its applicability tests implemented at mine site. The results of the tests indicates that the new equipment developed is much lower than and economical compared to, other existing neutralization facilities at home and abroad in capital investment at installation stage, the consumption of neutralizing chemicals at operation stage and the requirements of installation site. Whangji area where the prototype water treatment equipment is installed has been sustaining a short supply of usable water, especially in dry seasons and supplementing about 40㎥ of water brought from a location farther than 4km in distance to meet water requirements. The prototype water treatment equipment is however considered capable of providing compressor cooling water in sufficient amount from winter season In the future.

  • This study sampled endangered species, Lamprotula coreana, and surveyed its habitat at the Guem River with three times from June to August 2013. To assess the habitat, this study conducted field survey considering diverse physical conditions of stream, such as pool, run and riffle, and measured transect, water depth, water velocity, substrate structure, and habitat type. When L. coreana collected, length, weight and age were measured. Water velocity, water depth and substrate structure were recorded to develop HSI (habitat suitability index) and performed PHABSIM (physical habitat simulation) to estimate the optimum flow discharge. Water level, flow discharge and transect data were used for habitat assessment, and PHABSIM was applied to calculate WUA (weighed usable area). Shell length was $73.1{\pm}18.4mm$ (28.5-102.0 mm), shell weight was $131.6{\pm}72.3g$ (28.0-281.0 g) and age was two to seven years from L. coreana collected at the upstream of the Guem River. Developed HSI indicated that the optimal habitat for L. coreana was 0.4-0.5 m for water depth, 0.3-0.5 m/s for water velocity and sand to boulder for substrate structure. The optimum ecological flow discharge for L. coreana was 2.1 cms and WUA was $3,730m^2$/1000 m by the result of PHABSIM. Recently, river construction work and habitat disturbance have caused negative impact on the distribution of L. coreana. The result of this study would provide fundamental data for habitat restoration and management of L. coreana.

  • In order to establish the applicability of organic soil as Earthwork Materials, this research conducts a battery of laboratory tests using two kinds of test materials. The test material A, a mixture of sand and organic soil, and the test material B, a mixture of granite soil and organic soil varying the proportion of organic soil through 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% are used. Continuous column leaching tests of the test materials A and B indicate that their COD value is substantially smaller than that of pure organic soil, the COD value of the early leached water slightly exceeds the standard level for leached water. The COD value after 4 hours of leaching becomes very small. The mixed soil of sand and organic soil is considered usable as embankment materials when the proportion of organic soil is up to 40% with the corresponding concentration ratio of organic contents is less than 11.3%. Similarly, the mixed soil of granite soil and organic soil is considered usable as earthwork materials when the proportion of organic soil is less than 30% with the corresponding concentration ratio of organic contents is less than 16.4%.

  • Based on recent studies, the side resistance of rock socketed drilled shafts was affected by unconfined compressive strength of rock, socket roughness, rock types and joints, and initial normal stress. Especially, the socket roughness was affected by rock types and joints, drilling methods, and diameters of pile. In this study, a new roughness measurement system (BKS-LRPS, Backyoung-KyungSung Laser Roughness Profiling System) usable in water was developed. Based on the laboratory model tests, an EMD (Effective Measurement Distances) according to various turbidity was proposed as $EMD=1149.2{\times}T_{b}^{-0.64}$.

  • Tree in river have environmental functions such as ecosystem preservation and flood control functions that protect the riverbank. On the other hand, excessive tree development can have the negative effect of fixing the sand bar and reducing the cross-sectional area. Nays2D simulation results performing two flow conditions (average dam operation discharge and two-year frequency discharge) and four tree density conditions (current, zero, low, high tree density) used as input data for PHABSIM to calculate WUA (Weighted Usable Area). The results show that riverbed changes occur more significantly in the zero tree density than presence of trees, which could have a positive impact on the biological habitat environment of Zacco platypus.
