  • Twenty male crossbred ($Sahiwal{\times}HF$) calves of about 6-9 months of age were divided into four groups of five animals each. All the animals were offered wheat straw ad lib. As the basal feed. However, animals in group I were fed concentrate mixture while the animals in groups II, III and IV had free access to urea molasses mineral block (UMMB) lick (I), (II) and (III) respectively as a partial substitute of concentrate mixture. The average concentrate offered (kg/day) to the animals was significantly (p<0.01) higher in group I ($2.69{\pm}0.18$) compared to groups II ($1.76{\pm}0.15$), III ($1.70{\pm}0.06$) and IV ($1.65{\pm}0.12$). The UMMB lick consumed was non-significantly different amongst groups I ($535.40{\pm}38.14$), II ($525.60{\pm}31.82$), III ($551.00{\pm}38.49$) and IV ($548.80{\pm}45.46$). Except ether extract, the digestibility coefficients of CP, ADF and NDF were non-significantly different in different groups. Similarly, N balance (g/day) and percent N retention of intake was not affected in different groups on supplementation of UMMB lick. Body composition of animals was similar in different groups supplemented with either concentrate mixture or concentrate mixture and UMMB licks. It may be concluded from these studies that UMMB lick can partially replace the concentrate mixture in the diet of growing calves without affecting the growth rate, nutrient utilization and body composition. The UMMB lick, thus, can form a part of the ration economically in the diet of growing ruminants especially in developing countries.

  • Influence of different levels of corn steep liquor (CSL) on chemical composition of urea treated wheat straw (UTWS), ruminal characteristics, digestion kinetics, nitrogen (N) utilization, and nutrient digestibility by ruminally-cannulated buffalo bulls was studied in a $4{\times}4$ Latin Square Design. The CSL was used to ensile 5% UTWS at the rate of 0, 3, 6, and 9% on a dry matter (DM) basis. Total N and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) were increased with increasing level of CSL. Increased NDF content was attributable to increased neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen. Four diets were formulated to contain 20% concentrate and 80% UTWS ensiled with 0, (control), 3 (CSL3), 6 (CSL6), and 9% CSL (CSL9). All diets were mixed daily and fed at 1.5% of body weight twice daily. Ruminal NH3 concentration decreased with level of CSL used to ensile UTWS at 3 and 6 h post prandial, however, at 9 h post parandial it was similar across all diets and at 12 h post prandial was higher with diets containing UTWS ensiled with CSL. Concentrations of total ruminal volatile fatty acid and acetate were increased with the CSL level used to ensile UTWS. Increased rate of disappearance and reduction in lag time of DM and NDF was recorded with diets containing UTWS ensiled with CSL. Dry matter and NDF digestibilities were higher with CSL diets than on the control diet. Buffalo bulls retained more N with diets containing UTWS ensiled with CSL. The present results indicated that UTWS could be ensiled with CSL to improve its nutritive value and N utilization by ruminants.

  • This study was carried out to acquire basic data necessary for the use of non-wood pulp. It investigated various chemical pulping methods using bamboo to achieve higher yield lower kappa no. and then the physical properties of various pulps were tested. The results of this study were as follows. When various chemical pulps(Soda, Soda-AQ, Soda-AQ-H2O2, Soda-urea, AS, AS-AQ, Kraft) were produced with bamboo. the pulps with the higher yield and lower kappa no. were AS-AQ and Kraft. In the case of the breaking length Soda pulps(5.77∼6.46 km) showed the greatest and Soda-urea pulps(3.81∼4.522km) showed the lower value. Similarly for the burst index Soda pulps (3.28∼3.50 kPa$.$m2/g) were the best and Soda-urea pulps(2.29∼2.39 kPa$.$m2/g) were worst. On the other hand the tearing indexes of AS-AQ pulps(73.6∼89.7mN$.$m2/g) showed the tendency which was higher then those of other pulps.

  • The by-products which were occured in the synthesis of 5-ethyl-5-phenyl barbituric acid were isolated by column chromatography combined with gas-liquid chromatography and were identified by elemental analysis, ir, nmr and mass spectroscopy ; major by-products were ethyl${\alpha}$-phenylbutyrate and ${\alpha}$-phenylbutyramide. The alkoxide which was known to be a condensation agent not only accelerated the condensation but also did the decarboxylation. And the entity concenrned with the condensation with diethyl ethylphenylmalonate was not urea but N-monosodium urea.

  • Benzalkonium chloride, diazolidinyl urea, and imidazolidinyl urea are commonly used preservatives in cosmetics. Recent reports suggested that these compounds may have cellular and systemic toxicity in high concentration. In addition, diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidinyl urea are known formaldehyde (FA) releasers, raising concerns for these cosmetic preservatives. In this study, we investigated the effects of benzalkonium chloride, diazolidinyl urea, and imidazolidinyl urea on ROS-dependent apoptosis of rat neural progenitor cells (NPCs) in vitro. Cells were isolated and cultured from embryonic day 14 rat cortices. Cultured cells were treated with 1-1,000 nM benzalkonium chloride, and $1-50{\mu}M$ diazolidinyl urea or imidazolidinyl urea at various time points to measure the reactive oxygen species (ROS). PI staining, MTT assay, and live-cell imaging were used for cell viability measurements. Western blot was carried out for cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved caspase-8 as apoptotic protein markers. In rat NPCs, ROS production and cleaved caspase-8 expression were increased while the cell viability was decreased in high concentrations of these substances. These results suggest that several cosmetic preservatives at high concentrations can induce neural toxicity in rat brains through ROS induction and apoptosis.

  • Leucaena silage was supplemented with different levels of molasses and urea to study its nutritive value and in vitro rumen fermentation efficiency. The ensiling study was randomly assigned according to a $3{\times}3$ factorial arrangement in which the first factor was molasses (M) supplement at 0%, 1%, and 2% of crop dry matter (DM) and the second was urea (U) supplement as 0%, 0.5%, and 1% of the crop DM, respectively. After 28 days of ensiling, the silage samples were collected and analyzed for chemical composition. All the nine Leucaena silages were kept for study of rumen fermentation efficiency using in vitro gas production techniques. The present result shows that supplementation of U or M did not affect DM, organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber content in the silage. However, increasing level of U supplementation increased crude protein content while M level did not show any effect. Moreover, the combination of U and M supplement decreased the content of mimosine concentration especially with M2U1 (molasses 2% and urea 1%) silage. The result of the in vitro study shows that gas production kinetics, cumulation gas at 96 h and in vitro true digestibility increased with the increasing level of U and M supplementation especially in the combination treatments. Supplementation of M and U resulted in increasing propionic acid and total volatile fatty acid whereas, acetic acid, butyric acid concentrations and methane production were not changed. In addition, increasing U level supplementation increased $NH_3$-N concentration. Result from real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed a significant effect on total bacteria, whereas F. succinogenes and R. flavefaciens population while R. albus was not affected by the M and U supplementation. Based on this study, it could be concluded that M and urea U supplementation could improve the nutritive value of Leucaena silage and enhance in vitro rumen fermentation efficiency. This study also suggested that the combination use of M and U supplementation level was at 2% and 1%, respectively.

  • The effects of two-step fixation of steaming and baking on the dischargeability of cotton fabrics dyed with C.I. Reactive Black 5(Bl-5) were investigated when the concentrations of $K_2CO_3$ and benzaldehyde sodium bisulfite(BASB) were increased over 120/kg. Remarkably increased dischargeability resulted from baking for 3 min or more at 160t after steaming for 8 min or more at $102^\circ{C}$, but 120g/kg or more amounts of $K_2CO_3$ and BASB(50%) had little influence on dischargeability. Therefore the discharge mechanism can be suggested that covalent bonds between cellulose and Bl-5 undergo $S_N2$ attack by hydroxide ion formed by the reaction of $K_2CO_3$ and water in steaming at $102^\circ{C}$ first and then, through transition states they are cleavaged in baking at 160t to yield hydrolyzed Bl-S and compounds of BASB and Bl-5 isolated from fiber, which are undyeable and removed by washing. The effect of urea, one of the hydrotrope agents, on discharge printing was also studied. The result which dischargeability was greatly improved by increasing the steaming time from 8 min to 15 min at $102^\circ{C}$ or by increasing the amount of urea obviously shows that water in steaming and urea in print paste play an important role in discharge printing. And as an increase of the baking time from 5 min to 7 min at $160^\circ{C}$ makes it possible to improve dischargeability, it is once more confirmed that high temperature of about 160t is exactly required to discharge the dyed Bl-5. The colored discharge printing demands a more amount of urea because urea contributes to the putting color fixation as well as the discharge reaction.
