  • Empathy is the ability to feel, understand, and respond to the emotions of others from the standpoint of others. Recently, 'sympathy' has emerged as an important issue not only in emotional empathy in relation to individuals but also in 'social empathy', which sees sympathy as a basic principle for maintaining society. This study focuses on the issue of empathy as a new driving force for modern society and focused on 'urban scene' as a spatial application for cultural empathy in the city. Urban scenes approach the city as a space of consumption, classify it according to its inherent attributes, and analyze its characteristics. This study approaches the existing urban scene theory in terms of empathy. In addition, as a way to consume city images reflected on contents, a concrete example of 'contents tourism'is examined, and a 'contents scene' is proposed as a new urban scene and its meaning and possibility are presented.

  • Due to the pandemic caused by Corona 19, cities around the world have faced a change. As the global economic system weakens, localization is increasing in the product production and distribution system. In addition, consumption patterns have changed in urban where localization has been strengthened. As a result, the way physical places are consumed is also changing. Consumption of large multi-use facilities has drastically decreased, the speed of the collapse of the online and offline boundaries has been accelerated, and the consumption of amenities for sharing tastes has become more subdivided, specialized, and private. A big change also appeared in the urban scene, which is perceived as the concentration of urban amenities. Local scale and locality became important in the urban scene, and a new urban scene element called empathy emerged. Empathy aims to connect socially and emotionally to individuals consuming urban amenities. The pursuit of connectivity, taste consumption, and nostalgia. In this study, the space for cultural consumption based on empathy was named as empathetic space and the concept was explained. The importance of empathic space in the urban scene in the future post-corona situation was presented.

  • For higher-level requirements of urban planning and management and the recent development of "digital earth" and "digital city", it is urgent to establish protocols for the construction of three-dimensional digital city models. However, some problems still exist in the digital technology of the three-dimensional city model, such as insufficient precision of the three-dimensional model, not optimizing the scene and not considering the constraints of building codes. In view of those points, a method to interactively simulate a virtual city scene based on building codes is proposed in this paper. Firstly, some constraint functions are set up to restrict the models to adhere to the building codes, and an improved directional bounding box technique is utilized to solve the problem that geometric objects may intersect in a virtual city scene. The three-dimensional model invocation strategy is designed to convert two-dimensional layouts to a three-dimensional urban scene. A Leap Motion hardware device is used to interactively place the 3D models in a virtual scene. Finally, the design and construction of the three-dimensional scene are completed by using Unity3D. The experiment shows that this method can simulate urban virtual scenes that strictly adhere to building codes in a virtual scene of the city environment, but also provide information and decision-making functions for urban planning and management.

  • In recent years, the research of 3D mapping technique in urban environments obtained by mobile robots equipped with multiple sensors for recognizing the robot's surroundings is being studied actively. However, the map generated by simple integration of multiple sensors data only gives spatial information to robots. To get a semantic knowledge to help an autonomous mobile robot from the map, the robot has to convert low-level map representations to higher-level ones containing semantic knowledge of a scene. Given a 3D point cloud of an urban scene, this research proposes a method to recognize the objects effectively using 3D graph model for autonomous mobile robots. The proposed method is decomposed into three steps: sequential range data acquisition, normal vector estimation and incremental graph-based segmentation. This method guarantees the both real-time performance and accuracy of recognizing the objects in real urban environments. Also, it can provide plentiful data for classifying the objects. To evaluate a performance of proposed method, computation time and recognition rate of objects are analyzed. Experimental results show that the proposed method has efficiently in understanding the semantic knowledge of an urban environment.

  • The active control of a vehicle based on vehicle recognition is one of key technologies for the intelligent vehicle, and the part-based image representation is necessary to recognize vehicles with only partial shapes of vehicles especially in urban scene where occlusions frequently occur. In this paper, we implemented a part-based image representation scheme using non-negative tensor factorization(NTF) and realized a robust vehicle recognition system using the NTF feature. The result shows that the proposed method gives more intuitive part-based representation and more robust recognition in urban scene.

  • A map of complex environment can be generated using a robot carrying sensors. However, representation of environments directly using the integration of sensor data tells only spatial existence. In order to execute high-level applications, robots need semantic knowledge of the environments. This research investigates the design of a system for recognizing objects in 3D point clouds of urban environments. The proposed system is decomposed into five steps: sequential LIDAR scan, point classification, ground detection and elimination, segmentation, and object classification. This method could classify the various objects in urban environment, such as cars, trees, buildings, posts, etc. The simple methods minimizing time-consuming process are developed to guarantee real-time performance and to perform data classification on-the-fly as data is being acquired. To evaluate performance of the proposed methods, computation time and recognition rate are analyzed. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has efficiency in fast understanding the semantic knowledge of a dynamic urban environment.

  • The full extent of damage depend greatly on the quick and rational decision making by the incident commander soon after the disaster. The decision that everybody should wait by the captain, not to enter into the ship by the first dispatched incident commander, broadcasting failure have brought about a huge loss of life at Sewol cruise ship incident. Thus this study reviews the training and education system supporting the rational crisis decision making performed by the incident commander to cut off the expansion of disaster which is caused by the failure of the incident situation awareness and the decision making described above.

  • A novel image mosaicking technique suitable for 3D urban visualization is proposed. It is not effective to apply 2D image mosaicking techniques for urban visualization when, for example, one is filming a sequence of images from a side-looking video camera along a road in an urban area. The proposed method presents the roadside scene captured by a side-looking video camera as a continuous set of textured planar faces, which are termed 'multiple planes' in this paper. The exterior parameters of each frame are first calculated through automatically selected matching feature points. The matching feature points are also used to estimate a plane approximation of the scene geometry for each frame. These planes are concatenated to create an approximate model on which images are back-projected as textures. Here, we demonstrate algorithm that creates efficient image mosaics in 3D space from a sequence of real images.

  • This paper is to explore a new planning paradigm for urban landscape-not a new paradigm for urban landscape planning- in the light of environmental aesthetics. This is an endeavor to construct an alternative to the philosophical absence in the landscape profession. The landscape has been conceived of visual -oriented urban scene, and this notion is one of consequences of subject-object dualism in Western modernity project. In contrast with this convention, the authors consider urban landscape as the aesthetic field in which an experience of urban landscape actually works in human ordinary life and experience. To acquire an aestetic experience in this aesthetic field, we need to replace the doctrine of disinterestedness with engagement and contemplation with participation. This concept of participatory engagement with landscape can be translated in specific and concrete ways into urban landscape planning, replacing the traditional panoramic landscape with engaged landscape. The authors approach the urban landscape from the vantage point of an aesthetics of engagement by developing the four environmental situations : the sailing ship, the circus, the cathedral, and the sunset. They may serve as useful guides in cultivating and beautiful urban landscape to replace the forces of vulgarity and monotony that depress the modern city. What is beautiful urban landscape\ulcorner What makes the urban landscape beautiful\ulcorner Finally, the authors suggest identity and amenity as practical concepts of urban landscape planning for an aesthetic experience.

  • As the city in Korea has been developed rapidly and quantitatively, land viewscape has been neglected and is being recognized as one of the important issue that we have to interest in now. But land viewscape scene has not yet constructed numerically and objectively, therefore the analysis of urban viewscape had been made inefficiently, nonsystmetically, inexactively. In this study, the quantitative analysis of urban viewscape by using digital photogrammetry and GIS was made. At the result of this study, it was showed that 3D analysis of urban viewscape using digital photogrammetry is numerical, quantitative and objective not intuitive, quantitative and subjective.
