  • A rural area of Korea is inferior compare to urban areas in physical settlements, and an elderly people of the inhabitant increased and it is not easy to see young people in a rural villages. It comes from income difference between industrial type and area and leaving rural area are the accelerated and repeated, and resident who live in rural area after twenty to thirty years can be an elderly society A settlement of rural area is needed settlement rehabilitation for elderly society as follows first, a model development and public support of settlement rehabilitation for rural areas. Second, village remodeling of farming village for elderly are discussed. The rehabilitate rural villages is expected an immigration from urban area which over crowding, and eco tour as new industry.

  • Instream flow is necessary to manage the basic function of the rivers. The evaluation method of instream flow in a big river has been studied widely. However, the study in a urban hasn't researched. In theses days the environmental function of a river becomes very important. The evaluation method and secure of instream flow are basic conditions to perform it. Especially view of stream, recreation, protection of ecology are highly demanded In a urban according to the multipurpose of river spaces. In this paper the evaluation methods of instream flow were compared and investigated with many papers. This paper presents a proper evaluation procedure of instream flow in a urban stream through comparison and examination. According to the demanded hydraulic conditions the method can be considered the environmental function depend on the purpose of river restoration. The relationship of the coefficient of roughness and the slope of the river bed were examinated in order to estimate the minimum instream flow corresponding to proper Hydraulic conditions. Also calculate the instream flow of Sueng-gi stream in In-cheon.

  • Our government is interested in the rehabilitation for the old sewer rather than the construction of a new sewer system. However, the research work on the sewer rehabilitation is not sufficient as much as the interest on the rehabilitation is increased. There are some research works for the determination of rehabilitation time by the genetic algorithm in Korea and foreign countries. However, the previous studies have considered the simple elements for the determination of the rehabilitation time and so the complex decision-making according to the degree of sewer superannuation has not been performed. Therefore, in this study, we estimate the capacity and Ⅰ/Ⅰ of sewer and determine the priority of the optimal rehabilitation for each outfall within the draining system. Also we develop the optimal rehabilitation decision making system for the cost estimation of optimal rehabilitation using the genetic algorithm.

  • Background: Based on the increase in the needs for convalescent rehabilitation medical services in Korea, this study aims to calculate the needs for rehabilitation services and examine its determinants for 229 regions. Methods: Claim data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service were used to estimate patients who need to receive rehabilitation services, and data from various sources were also used for analysis. The number of cases and incidence rates of hospitalization related to convalescent rehabilitation were calculated to estimate the needs for services by region, and the results were visualized via a map. Multivariate regression and fixed effects regression using panel data were performed to identify the determinants of regional variation of the incidence rate. Results: First, the incidence rate of rural areas such as Jeolla-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Chungcheong-do was higher than urban areas (metropolitan cities). Second, the population, proportion of the elder, medical aid recipients, financial independence, traffic deaths, smoking, diabetes rate, and medical infrastructure correlated significantly with the incidence rate. Third, 'rho' values which mean the fraction of variance due to individual terms in panel data regression models were 0.965 and 0.976, respectively. Conclusion: The incidence rate of hospitalizations was correlated with most independent variables in this study and there is a gap between urban and rural areas. These regional disparities are fixed in our society. An improved regional convalescent rehabilitation system is suggested to cover the entire area including rural areas with a high rate of aging.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of depression and its risk factors among older adults using social service centers in one urban community. Methods: The participants were 326 older adults who were aged 60 and older in one urban Korean community. Depression was measured by Korean version of short form Geriatric Depression Scale. Results: The prevalence of depression was 33.74% in this study. Logistic regression analysis showed that older adults who were taking prescribed medications, experiencing more symptoms, being educated less than elementary school and having low family function were more likely to have depression as compared to their counterparts. Conclusion: The findings of this study were expected to promote the screening or preventing strategies for older adults at the risk of depression in the community-dwelling older adults.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare healthy life style and chronic disease management between urban and rural older adults. Methods: The study employed a comparative and descriptive survey design. Data were collected from 154 older adults living independently in communities (79 from urban and 75 from rural areas) using structured questionaries from 24 July, 2010 to 14 August, 2011. Results: Perceived health status was significantly lower in urban older adults than those in rural areas ($x^2$=13.27, p = .001). Frequency of regular health examination was better in the urban group than the rural group ($x^2$=4.71, p = .030). Among older adults with hypertension, medication noncompliance was higher, and participation rate in disease management education was lower in the rural group than the urban group ($x^2$=6.43, p = .040; $x^2$=23.51, p<.001, respectively) and the same as arthritis. Conclusion: Rural older adults had more problems with health and disease management in this study, might be, due to difficulties in access to health care services than urban residents. More tailored programs of disease management as well as health service programs and staffing should be developed in rural areas. For urban older adults, meal preparation program and more opportunities producing income may be needed.

  • In the stage of feasibility study of urban rehabilitation projects, the precise forecast of physical and environmental changes has great influence on the further transaction of the projects. However, various important decision makings are made by the experience and intuition of the person-in-charge in practice without the process and method for systematic and quantitative analysis. In spite of various qualitative influent factors on the projects, the feasibility studies are made by the result of economic analysis only, which often lead the projects to the crucial deficit. The main reasons of such a mal-functional transaction are due to the absence of the reasonal procedure of feasibility study and decision making reflecting the characteristics of urban rehabilitation projects. The objective of this paper is to propose feasibility study processes and decision making methods in relation to various influent factors on urban rehabilitation projects in the initial stage. The goal and process of every analysis stage and the pertinent factors and decision makings are analyzed and proposed through the survey of current research, a case study, interview with the professionals. The processes and methods are well applied to improve current problems of feasibility study of urban rehabilitation projects. In addition, the establishment of the analysis goal at three principal stage and a series of reasonable decision makings with pertinent factors to each stage will lead the project to more successful result than ever.

  • Objective: Despite known associations between negative body image and health declines in chronic pain patients, few studies have examined longitudinal associations between psychological stress and perceived hand deformities. This study examined whether psychological distress was associated with hand deformities 4 years later and if rural and urban adults differed in the association. Design: A community-based cohort study. Methods: Community dwelling adults (mean age=51.97, 52.3% women) in a rural (n=2968) and urban area (n=2784) provided demographic data at baseline and, in the 4-year follow-up, responded to questionnaires about psychological distress. Perceived hand deformities were assessed at the 8-year follow-up. Linear regression was conducted to examine the effects of psychological distress on hand deformities and moderation by residential areas. Results: The perceived hand deformities were more likely among those with severe psychological stress, hand osteoarthritis, or any chronic disease condition (p<0.01) but less likely among those with younger age, higher education, or income (p<0.01). The regression results showed that psychological distress predicted more perceived hand deformities 4 years later even after adjusting for demographic and health covariates (p<0.01). The residential areas did not significantly moderate the association between distress and hand deformities. Conclusions: This study suggected that psychological distress may trigger later perception of hand deformities in both urband and rural adults. The findings indicate that stress management interventions that are customizable to regional contexts may be effective at preventing negative body image related health problems of community-dewelling adults.
