Electrical resistivity survey and interpretation considering excavation effects for the detection of loose ground in urban area

  • Ground subsidence in urban areas due to excessive development and degraded underground facilities is a serious problem. Geophysical surveys have been conducted to estimate the distribution and scale of cavities and subsidence. In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was performed near an area of road subsidence in an urban area. The subsidence arose due to groundwater leakage that carried soil into a neighboring excavation site. The ERT survey line was located between the main subsidence area and an excavation site. Because ERT data are affected by rapid topographic changes and surrounding structures, the influence of the excavation site on the data was analyzed through field-scale numerical modeling. The effect of an excavation should be considered when interpreting ERT data because it can lead to wrong anomalous results. A method for performing 2D inversion after correcting resistivity data for the effect of the excavation site was proposed. This method was initially tested using a field-scale numerical model that included the excavation site and subsurface anomaly, which was a loosened zone, and was then applied to field data. In addition, ERT data were interpreted using an existing in-house 3D algorithm, which considered the effect of excavation sites. The inversion results demonstrated that conductive anomalies in the loosened zone were greater compared to the inversion that did not consider the effects of excavation.

  • The Australian construction industry is characterized as being a competitive and risky business environment due to lack of cooperation, insufficient trust, ineffective communication and adversarial relationships which are likely lead to poor project performance. Relational contracting (RC) is advocated by literature as an innovative approach to improve the procurement process in the construction industry. Various studies have collectively added to the current knowledge of known RC norms, but there seem to be little effort on investigating the determinants of RC and its impact on project outcomes. In such circumstances, there is lack of evidence and explanation on the manner on how these issues lead to different performance. Simultaneously, the New Engineering Contract (NEC) that embraced the concept of RC is seen as a modern way of contracting and also considered as one of the best approaches to the perennial problem of improving adversarial relationships within the industry. The reality of practice of RC in Australia is investigated through the lens of the NEC. A synthesis of literature views on the concept, processes and tools of RC is first conducted to develop the framework of RC. A case study approach is proposed for an in-depth analysis to explore the critical issues addressed by RC in relation to project performance. Understanding the realities of RC will assist stakeholders in the construction industry with their investment in RC.

Digital Twin based Household Water Consumption Forecasting using Agent Based Modeling

  • The continuous increase in urban population due to migration of mases from rural areas to big cities has set urban water supply under serious stress. Urban water resources face scarcity of available water quantity, which ultimately effects the water supply. It is high time to address this challenging problem by taking appropriate measures for the improvement of water utility services linked with better understanding of demand side management (DSM), which leads to an effective state of water supply governance. We propose a dynamic framework for preventive DSM that results in optimization of water resource management. This paper uses Agent Based Modeling (ABM) with Digital Twin (DT) to model water consumption behavior of a population and consequently forecast water demand. DT creates a digital clone of the system using physical model, sensors, and data analytics to integrate multi-physical quantities. By doing so, the proposed model replicates the physical settings to perform the remote monitoring and controlling jobs on the digital format, whilst offering support in decision making to the relevant authorities.

도시철도 쵸파형 전동차 배리스터(varistor) 유지보수 방안 연구 (A Study on the Varistor Maintenance program in urban rail chopper type subway train)

  • In the case of an urban rail chopper type subway train, varistors have been installed for protecting usual electronic equipments, semiconductor devices(diodes, transistors, thyrister, etc.) communications, measuring, control device and absorbing opening & closing surge of electromagnetic valve. These varistors were steadily reduced dielectric strength as becoming superannuated. Thus there is a problem that reacts more sensitive at the same surge in the general control operation. On existing maintenance, there is not specific standard to replace superannuated varistor. So when maintaining chopper type subway train, all varistors or old varistors that workers checked a discoloration & crack with the naked eye and noticed degradation smell by deterioration are replaced. This study suggests detail standards for judgement that varistors are good or bad chopper type subway train, and it draw a efficient maintenance which efficient maintenance can check more easy the degradation properties variation.

  • Development of para-transit is imminent in modern metropolis which are galloping toward motorization. Compared with other already industrialize countries, our metropolis can take a vantage of late starter in coping with urban transportation problem. Our metropolis are still heavily relying on public and/or pare-transit in modal split. Current government policy toward taxi-cab, however, seems to contradict with the objective of developing para-transit. If it is not adequately developed, the middle-class people of higher income would have no other option than having their own auto as already been observed. It will centainly accelerate our motorization process so that we follow the model of industrialized countries, and their problems too. Insisting that our transport policy should be drastically reformulated in favor of paratransit in addition to public transit, this study reappraise current policy on taxi-cab with respect to fare, prohibition of shared-ride, and other regulatory measures and propose and management model for taxi fare and operating policy in metropolis.

Directional texture information for connecting road segments in high spatial resolution satellite images

  • This paper addresses the use of directional textural information for connecting road segments. In urban scene, some roads are occluded by buildings, casting shadow of buildings, trees, and cars on streets. Automatic extraction of road network from remotely sensed high resolution imagery is generally hindered by them. The results of automatic road network extraction will be incomplete. To overcome this problem, several perceptual grouping algorithms are often used based on similarity, proximity, continuation, and symmetry. Roads have directions and are connected to adjacent roads with certain angles. The directional information is used to guide road fragments connection based on roads directional inertia or characteristics of road junctions. In the primitive stage, roads are extracted with textural and direction information automatically with certain length of linearity. The primitive road fragments are connected based on the directional information to improve the road network. Experimental results show some contribution of this approach for completing road network, specifically in urban area.

A Mathematical Model of a Central District Heating System for an Urban Residential Community

  • A mathematical model is developed in order to describe the network configuration and heating distribution to a Central District Heating System for an Urban Residential Community. The purpose of using this model is to optimize operating costs and to distribute heat to the Residential Community efficiently. In particular, because of the inherent nonlinearity and dual optimization of the problem a dyamic programming approach is taken. It is turned out that the optimal cost of the system is a strong non-linear function of the network. In particular, it is found that increasing N, the number of houses, may not necessarily imply increased costs. It is felt that past failure of producing economical systems may be due to the improper attention given to the network.

  • The influx of the apartment housing culture have passed thirty years, but it has been pricipally developed that in terms of the urban's residents. There is very important problem when we think about the improvement of housing's life of dwellers in rural. Therefore, as increased demand of apartment housing and dweller's needs in rural we think that there is worth studing to the residents of rural's apartment housings. The purpose of this study is to understand the housing in rural, to discriminate between rural's and urban's apartment housing plan and to adapt to basic data to satisfy request of rural apartment housing's residents according to the family composition.

직류 도시철도 변전소 수요전력 예측 (Power Demand Forecasting in the DC Urban Railway Substation)

  • Power demand forecasting is an important factor of the peak management. This paper deals with the 15 minutes ahead load forecasting problem in a DC urban railway system. Since supplied power lines to trains are connected with parallel, the load characteristics are too complex and highly non-linear. The main idea of the proposed method for the 15 minutes ahead prediction is to use the daily load similarity accounting for the load nonlinearity. An Euclidean norm with weighted factors including loads of the neighbor substation is used for the similar load selection. The prediction value is determinated by the sum of the similar load and the correction value. The correction has applied the neural network model. The feasibility of the proposed method is exemplified through some simulations applied to the actual load data of Incheon subway system.

  • In filtering of urban lidar data, low outliers or opening underground areas may cause errors that some ground points are labelled as non-ground objects. To solve such a problem, this paper proposes an automated method which consists of RANSAC algorithm, one-dimensional labeling, and morphology filter. All processes are conducted along the lidar scan line profile for efficient computation. Lidar data over Dajeon, Korea is used and the final results are evaluated visually. It is shown that the proposed method is quite promising in urban dem generation.
