  • Recently, heat island and dry island phenomena occur frequently due to land surface development and excessive energy consumption in urban areas. As a result, the surface temperature of the building and the entire temperature of its surroundings are increased, and as a result, the durability of the building is rapidly deteriorated. In order to suppress these causes, a method of maintaining the temperature of road heating wires was implemented as a temporary measure, but this did not predict climate change. Therefore, this study is a method to measure the compressive strength, density, and thermal conductivity of light weight concrete using waste glass foam beads. After fabricating a simple chamber, the temperature and humidity of the inside and outside were measured with an Arduino device in consideration of external factors. Therefore, if waste glass foam beads made through proper mixing are constructed in the urban center, the quality of the urban can be improved.

Assessment of Feasibility of Rainfall-Runoff Simulation Using SRTM-DEM Based on SWMM (SWMM 기반 SRTM-DEM을 활용한 강우-유출 모의 가능성 평가)

  • The recent increase in impermeable surfaces due to urbanization and the occurrence of concentrated heavy rainfall events caused by climate change have led to an increase in urban flooding. To predict and prepare for flood damage, a convenient and highly accurate simulation of rainfall-runoff based on geospatial information is essential. In this study, the storm water management model (SWMM) was applied to simulate rainfall runoff in the Bangbae-dong area of Seoul, using two sets of topographical data: The conventional topographic digital elevation model (TOPO-DEM) and the proposed shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM)-DEM. To evaluate the applicability of the SRTM-DEM for rainfall-runoff modeling, two DEMs were constructed for the study area, and rainfall-runoff simulations were performed. The construction of the terrain data for the study area generally reflected the topographical characteristics of the area. Quantitative evaluation of the rainfall-runoff simulation results indicated that the outcomes were similar to those obtained using the existing TOPO-DEM. Based on the results of this study, we propose the use of SRTM-DEM, a more convenient terrain data, in rainfall-runoff studies, rather than asserting the superiority of a specific geospatial data.

  • 본 연구에서는 현재 이용 가능한 지상관측자료와 이차원 원격관측자료를 이용하여 장기간의 지역기후변화 특성을 분석하였다. 기상자료로는 강수량, 기온, 습도, 대형$\cdot$소형 팬 증발량 등을 월별, 연별로 분석하였고 이차원 원격관측자료로 정규식생지수를 사용하여 전통적 도시화지역, 산업화로 급격하게 도시화가 된 지역, 비도시지역으로 나누어 경향성분석을 실시하였다. 강수량과 기온은 관측전지점에서 증가추세를 보였고 도시화된 지역이 비도시지역보다 그 변화 추이가 강함을 볼수 있었다. 정규식생지수분석결과 도시화의 영향을 더 뚜렷이 관측할수 있었는데 도시지역은 정규식생지수값이 감소추세를 나타내는 반면 비도시지역인 소양강$\cdot$안동댐은 증가추세를 나타내었다.

Ecological Studies of Food Resources of Summer Breeding House Swallow (Hirundo rustica) in Korea (우리나라에 번식하는 제비의 먹이자원에 관한 생태학적 연구)

  • In Korea the population of breeding house swallow is continuously decreasing. In this regard this study was conducted to find out the overall population trend during 2001-2005. The areas of urban and rural sites were separated to estimate population. Also the sites in Yangpyung areas were chosen to compare population density between two sites during Mar-Aug, 2006. The house swallow had two breeding periods and I tried to correlated amount of days of incubation and number of eggs in the nest. After egg hatching the homing behavior also was estimated assuming lack of foods takes longer to bring foods back to the nest. This study signified that a long term study should be conducted for population change and spring arrival time due to climate change in Korea.

Prediction of present and future distribution of the Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) using MaxEnt modeling

  • Background: Understanding the geographical distribution of a species is a key component of studying its ecology, evolution, and conservation. Although Schlegel's Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus) is widely distributed in Northeast Asia, its distribution has not been studied in detail. We predicted the present and future distribution of G. japonicus across China, Japan, and Korea based on 19 climatic and 5 environmental variables using the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) species distribution model. Results: Present time major suitable habitats for G. japonicus, having greater than 0.55 probability of presence (threshold based on the average predicted probability of the presence records), are located at coastal and inland cities of China; western, southern, and northern coasts of Kyushu and Honshu in Japan; and southern coastal cities of Korea. Japan contained 69.3% of the suitable habitats, followed by China (27.1%) and Korea (4.2%). Temperature seasonality (66.5% of permutation importance) was the most important predictor of the distribution. Future distributions according to two climate change scenarios predicted that by 2070, and overall suitable habitats would decrease compared to the present habitats by 18.4% (scenario RCP 4.5) and 10.4% (scenario RCP 8.5). In contrast to these overall trends, range expansions are expected in inland areas of China and southern parts of Korea. Conclusions: Suitable habitats predicted for G. japonicus are currently located in coastal cities of Japan, China, and Korea, as well as in isolated patches of inland China. Due to climate change, suitable habitats are expected to shrink along coastlines, particularly at the coastal-edge of climate change zones. Overall, our results provide essential distribution range information for future ecological studies of G. japonicus across its distribution range.

Assessing Landslide Risk in Relation to Rainfall Frequency and Duration under the SSP5-8.5 Climate Change Scenario (SSP5-8.5 기후변화 시나리오를 적용하여 강우재현빈도-강우지속시간에 따른 토사재해 위험도 변화 분석)

  • Landslide risk is influenced by internal factors such as terrain, geology, soil composition, and forest cover, and external factors such as rainfall and seismic activity. In particular, changes in rainfall patterns due to climate change and changes in terrain due to urban sprawl result in increased landslide risk, both directly and indirectly. This study analyzes internal factors that influence landslide risk using existing spatial data and examines changes in rainfall under the SSP5-8.5 climate change scenario. Rainfall intensity was evaluated across different frequencies and durations, and the landslide risk was assessed by applying rainfall infiltration models to mountain slopes. The analysis reveals that with increasing rainfall duration (1, 6, 12, 18, and 24 h) for an event with a recurrence interval of 10 yr rainfall intensity decreases. However, for shorter rainfall durations (1 h), the intensity increases with the event frequency (10, 20, 50, and 100 yr). Infiltration analysis further shows that with prolonged rainfall, the proportion of areas with a safety factor of 1.3 or higher decreases, thereby raising the landslide risk.

The Impact of International Integration on the Inequality of Income between Rural and Urban Areas in Vietnam

  • The study examines the impact of international integration on Vietnam's rural and urban income inequalities using the regression model. The data used for this study is based on the results of the Vietnam Household Living Standards survey from 2008 to 2016 of the General Statistics Office. These surveys conducted nationwide with a sample size of 46,995 households in 3,133 communes/wards which were representative at national, regional, urban, rural and provincial levels. The level of international economic integration used in the study is the proportion of import and export turnover of GDP, the proportion of FDI and GDP by province. Due to the heterogeneity and unobservableness of the single observant in the data set, we selected the models of random and fixed effects. The research results show that during the economic integration process, the Export/GDP factor is negatively related to income inequality. The remaining factors (GDP per capita, FDI/GDP, Educational level of households, Percentage of internet users, Aggregation of foreign cash inflow and GDP of the province) are all positively related to income inequality. The findings help assess the impact of international integration on rural-urban income inequality, but also provides a concrete basis to help policymakers address income inequality in the integration process.

Statistical Model Analysis of Urban Spatial Structures and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) - Air Pollution (AP) Integrated Emissions in Seoul (서울시 도시공간구조와 온실가스-대기오염 통합 배출량의 통계모형분석)

  • The relationship between urban spatial structures and GHG-AP integrated emissions was investigated by statistically analyzing those from 25 administrative districts of Seoul. Urban spatial structures, of which data were obtained from Seoul statistics yearbook, were classified into five categories of city development, residence, environment, traffic and economy. They were further classified into 10 components of local area, population, number of households, residential area, forest area, park area, registered vehicles, road area, number of businesses and total local taxes. GHG-AP integrated emissions were estimated based on IPCC(intergovernmental panel on climate change) 2006 guidelines, guideline for government greenhouse inventories, EPA AP-42(compilation of air pollutant emission factors) and preliminary studies. The result of statistical analysis indicated that GHG-AP integrated emissions were significantly correlated with urban spatial structures. The correlation analysis results showed that registered vehicles for GHG (r=0.803, p<0.01), forest area for AP (r=0.996, p<0.01), and park area for AP (r=0.889, p<0.01) were highly significant. From the factor analysis, three groups such as city and traffic categories, economy category and environment category were identified to be the governing factors controlling GHG-AP emissions. The multiple regression analysis also represented that the most influencing factors on GHG-AP emissions were categories of traffic and environment. 25 administrative districts of Seoul were clustered into six groups, of which each has similar characteristics of urban spatial structures and GHG-AP integrated emissions.

A Study for Activation Measure of Climate Change Mitigation Movement - A Case Study of Green Start Movement - (기후변화 완화 활동 활성화 방안에 관한 연구 - 그린스타트 운동을 중심으로 -)

  • The 'Green Start Movement' is a practical movement of green living to efficiently reduce the greenhouse gases originating from non-industrial fields such as household, commerce, transportation, etc. for the 'materialization of a low carbon society through green growth (Low Carbon, Green Korea)'. When the new government took office, following the Lee Myeongbak Administration that had presented 'Low Carbon, Green Growth' as a national vision, it was required to set up the direction of the practical movement of green life to respond to climate change persistently and stably as well as to evaluate the performance of the green start movement over the past 5 years. A questionnaire survey was administered to a total of 265 persons including public servants, members of environmental and non-environmental NGOs, participants of the green start movement and professionals. In the results of the questionnaire survey, many opinions have indicated that the awareness of the green start movement is increasing and the green start movement has had a positive impact on individual behavior and group behavior in terms of green living. The result shows, however, that the environmental NGOs don't cooperate sufficiently to create a 'green living' effect on a national scale. Action needs to be taken on the community level in order to generate a culture of environmental responsibility. The national administration office of the Green Start Movement Network should play the leading role between the government and environmental NGOs. The Green Start National Network should have greater autonomy and governance of the network needs to be restructured in order to work effectively. Also the Green Start Movement should identify specific local characteristics to support activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Best practices can be shared to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a substantial amount.

Atmospheric Dispersion of Particulate Matters (PM10 and PM2.5) and Ammonia Emitted from Livestock Farms Using AERMOD (AERMOD를 이용한 축산 미세먼지, 초미세먼지, 암모니아 배출의 대기확산 영향도 분석)

  • The particulate matters (PM10 and PM2.5) and ammonia emitted from livestock farms as dispersed to urban and residential areas can increase the public's concern over the health problem, social conflicts, and air quality. Understanding the atmospheric dispersion of such matters is important to prevent the problems for the regulatory purposes. In this study, AERMOD modeling was performed to predict the dispersion of livestock particulate matters and ammonia in Gwangju metropolitan city and five surrounding cities. The five cities were divided into 40 sub-zones to model the area-based emissions which varied with the number of livestock farms, species and growth stages of the animals. As a result, the concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and ammonia resulted from livestock farms located in the surrounding cities were 2.00 ㎍ m-3, 0.30 ㎍ m-3 and 0.04 ppm in the southwestern part of Gwangju based on the average concentration of 1 hour. These values accounted for 0.7% of PM10 concentration, 0.5% of PM2.5 concentration, and 0.4% of the ammonia concentration in Gwangju, contributing to a small amount of air pollution compared to other sources. As preventive measures, the plantation was applied to high emission source areas to reduce particulate matters and ammonia emissions by 35% and 31%, respectively, and resulted in decrease of the area of influence by 57% for particulate matters and 59% for ammonia.
