In an effort to preserve biodiversity in increasingly fragmented green patches, Korea has been installing eco-corridors over or under some arterial or expressways. In a survey of 43 such eco-corridors installed up until the year 2003, some problems and issues were identified. Some selected overseas eco-corridors were also investigated to find implications for the improvements of future installations in Korea. Major findings are; - For most existing eco-corridors, target species are not specified and locations of the eco-corridors are not well considered, and consequently it is questionable if wildlifes are crossing them - Most of existing eco-corridors lack supporting facilities such as fences that guide wildlife to cross them and prevent them from running into the road - Planting on the eco-corridors is not sufficient, not diverse enough in species, and not very considerate of wildlife but designed and planted in a similar manner as in urban parks - Where target species are not well specified, the location, width, cross section, and other aspects of the eco-corridors can not be optimized - It is suggested that eco-corridors are planned at early stages of road planning so that the number and locations of eco-corridor(s) decided as necessary and even the alignment and design of roads consider the installation of eco-corridors in advance - Monitoring of wildlife crossings is needed for improved eco-corridor planning and design - Nationwide green network plan is desirable to be made first and eco-corridors fit into it.

With the increasing popularity of electronic toll collection system using 5.8 GHz dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) technology, DSRC-based travel-time collection systems have been deployed on major urban and rural arterial routes in Korea. However, since probe sample sizes are frequently insufficient in probe-based systems, the gathered travel times from probe vehicles fluctuate significantly compared to those of the population; as a result, the accuracy of the collected travel times could decrease. To mitigate the fluctuations (also known as biases), smoothing techniques need to be applied. In this study, some smoothing techniques-moving average, the Loess, and Savitzky-Golay filtering-were applied to probe travel times. Resultantly, the error in the smoothed travel times at the lowest sampling plan (5%) decreased as much as 45% compared to those in non-smoothed travel times. The results of this study can be practically applied to probe-based travel-time estimation systems for providing reliable travel times along the travel corridor.

This study aims to explore a purely mechanistic pavement analysis approach where viscoelasticity and fracture of asphalt mixtures are considered to accurately predict deformation and damage behavior of flexible pavements. To do so, the viscoelastic and fracture properties of designated pavement materials are obtained through experiments and a fully mechanistic damage analysis is carried out using a finite element method (FEM). While modeling crack development can be done in various ways, this study uses the cohesive zone approach, which is a well-known fracture mechanics approach to efficiently model crack initiation and propagation. Different pavement configurations and traffic loads are considered based on three main functional classes of roads suggested by FHWA i.e., arterial, collector and local. For each road type, three different material combinations for asphalt concrete (AC) and base layers are considered to study damage behavior of pavement. A concept of the approach is presented and a case study where three different material combinations for AC and base layers are considered is exemplified to investigate progressive damage behavior of pavements when mixture properties and layer configurations were altered. Overall, it can be concluded that mechanistic pavement modeling attempted in this study could differentiate the performance of pavement sections due to varying design inputs. The promising results, although limited yet to be considered a fully practical method, infer that a few mixture tests can be integrated with the finite element modeling of the mixture tests and subsequent structural modeling of pavements to better design mixtures and pavements in a purely mechanistic manner.

Various social problems such as traffic congestion, car accidents and environmental problems(air pollution, noises etc.) have been happening in the Seoul metropolitan area that has the car oriented traffic system providing cars continuously. Along with this, the financial burden caused by current oil price anxiety made paradigm shift from caroriented to public transportation-oriented. Its typical example is an arterial branch bus system changing(bus lane through the center of main road) started in Seoul in July, 2004. But study on safety analysis of bus lane and characteristic of accidents are not sufficient enough to now. The bus lanes are expanded to provide roads for better traffic operation and accidents between buses and pedestrians or ordinary vehicles are considered main problems. This study divided each bus route of median bus lane(bus-only lane through the center of main roads) and bus lane at roadside by intersection and collected and analysed data about influence variables of bus accidents chosen in each section. We constructed a logistic model using collected data. As a result, bus lane at roadside are used by both buses and other kinds of vehicles differently from median bus lane and showed such characteristic in accident influence. Therefore access management to factors causing conflict and improvement of operation management are required. In case of median bus lane, the more buses moving general vehicle lane and traffic volume of section were, the more accidents happened. In case that stop line of center lane is not backward, view blocking of vehicles turning left caused accidents.
Data for travel information Provision are regularly aggregated to Provide travel time information in a reliable and convenient manner and to manage traffic data and information efficiently. In most of practices in Korea, the GPS based travel time data are mainly aggregated every 5 minutes As a result, some probes can't pass by a link within aggregation interval and thereby create uncompleted link passing data. But these data are mostly generated during the congested times and therefore a method that uses such uncompleted link passing data are required. This study estimated queue dissipation length, green time and cycle that use GPS spot speed and developed a link travel time estimation method using such uncompleted link passing data. It also presents method and the overall process of using such data to estimate link travel time in a more accurate manner. As a result, MAPE 1.98% and MAE 4.75 sec of link travel time accuracy improvement has been reported, which is not much different from the real link travel time. The method Proposed here would be an alternative to increase the amount of GPS probe data, especially in congested urban arterial case.

The bus probe-based link travel times were more readily available due to bus' fixed route schedule and it was different from that of taxi-based one in its value for the same link. At the same time, the bus-based one showed less accurate information than the taxi-based link travel time, in terms of reliability expressed by 1-RMSE(%) measure. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a heuristic algorithm for mixing both sources-based link travel times. The algorithm used both real-time and historical profile travel times. Real-time source used 4 consecutive periods' average and historical source used average value of link travel time for various congestion levels. The algorithm was evaluated for Seoul urban arterial network 3 corridors and 20 links. The results based on the developed algorithm were superior than the mere fusion based link travel times and the reliability amounted up to 71.45%. Some limitation and future research agenda have also been discussed.

This paper attempted to investigate not only the correlativity of land price and residential environment elements but also the effect that the residential environment elements influence on the land price, focusing on the Suyoung-Gu and Haeundae-Gu which are representative residential and waterfront area in Pusan. For this purpose, regression analysis and correlation analysis as the residential environment elements in independent variable and the land price in dependent variable were carried out. First of all, from the correlation analysis between the land price and the residential environment elements, it become clear that the variables such as the land use, the distance to arterial road and, the distance to subway station have high correlativity with land price in all the research area. Then from the individual power of explanation and accumulative power of explanation of the each variable to the land price through the regression analysis, it was become clear that 7 variables which are the land use, the distance to trunk road, the distance to subway station etc. have 67% of the power of explanation to land price at the Suyoung-Gu, and 50.5% at the Haeundae-Gu. Moreover, researchers had an special interest in the correlativity between the distance to the coastal line and land price as well as the power of explanation of the distance to the coastal line for the land price. It means that researchers expected the variable of the distance to the coastal line have a strong correlativity and high power of explanation for land price. However, from the regression analysis and correlation analysis, it was become clear that the variable of the distance to the coastal line have a weak correlativity, and low power of explanation which is just form 6.4% to 7.6% in all the research area. In other words, it might be said that the variable of the distance to the coastal line is not so important one to presume the land price.

The aim of this study is which factors affect the commercial land values and how they act upon them through distribution of commercial land values by multiple regression analysis in Gwangju city. The major findings of this study are as follows: (1) The changes of commercial land values distribution in $1989{\sim}1996$, We see that the commercial area of higher land values extends following the main arterial road. This is related to urbanization in urban fringe while the decline of commercial land values occurs in city center with long history of commercial region. This is due to unsuitableness in rapid changes of commercial environment because of fragmented lots, old buildings. traffic congestion etc. (2) The regions where commercial land values greatly rose are the west in constructed the new planning city center of Sangmu-dong. and the south west in which is related to the extension of high density apartment and the location of big discount stores. (3) Through the changes in commercial land values distribution map. and road map, topographical map, we know that commercial land values is related to various factors; namely, distance from CBD, convenient traffic, reputation of commercial district, condition of a road, size of supplementary, a degree of commercial land use etc. (4) From the above related factor, six variables are extracted by operational definition. That is the spatial distance from the city center, the walking distance to a stopping place, the road width, the amount of bus traffic, the amount of pedestrian, the number of the shop. (5) Data of seven variables are collected on the highest values point of each Dong. We applicate multiple regression analysis with commercial land values as a dependent variable, extracted six variables as independent variables. (6) As a result of multiple regression on the determinants of commercial land values, the variables which is greatly related to commercial land values are the amount of pedestrain, the spatial distance from city center. We identify that two variables explain variance of the commercial land values by 65%. (7) In order to make clear about not explained 35%. we carry out analysis of residual. In consequence, we see small estimate in downtown area and large estimate in urban fringe. This feature is due to simple core structure of Gwangju city and limits of this regression model.

Because the speed limit affects moving speed, it is closely related to traffic accidents as well as traffic flow. The existing speed limit calculation methods consider various engineering factors such as lanes, intersection spacing, driveways, crosswalks, 85 percentile speed, land uses, and roadway geometric characteristics etc. However, it can be said that the engineering analysis is insufficient because the traffic impact analysis considering traffic volume is not carried out. In addition, only 85 percentile speed, which is the spot speed, does not reflect the characteristics of the traffic flow on the road. In this paper, the effect of the speed limit change on the moving speed and the travel speed was analyzed in detail accordinr to the variation of intersection spacing and traffic volume. And by using the results, we proposed a speed limit calculation method that maintains the same service level as before the speed limit change, thereby increasing the speed improvement effect and reducing the difference between moving speed and travel speed. In addition, a variable speed limit operation method according to the change in traffic volume was also suggested. This method is expected to be effective in terms of safety by reducing the speed difference, which affects the severity of traffic accidents, while securing the speed improvement effect, and increasing the speed limit compliance rate of drivers by operating the speed limit that reflects the speed change due to the variation of traffic volume.

The capacity analysis of signalized intersection usually includes a HCM method used at home and abroad and a ICU method this study presents. The HCM method focuses on operation analysis measuring an intersection's delay in terms of given traffic volume, signal operation, and intersection structure data. This method includes planning and design analysis, but these analyses are complex due to being possible through repetitive operation analysis. However the ICU method is a powerful tool for planning and design analysis, because these are possible through brief traffic volume and geometry structure data and consider minimum green time. In this study, the authors studied the ICU method and compared the HCM and ICU by analyzing traffic volume scenarios. Also to consider effectiveness for application of the ICU method, the authors applied the ICU to capacity analysis of intersections on urban arterial for setting major intersection and effect analysis for changing crosswalk type, the number of lane, lane use and operation form of left turn. The result of the analyses shows that the ICU method can measure correct capacity of intersection consist of a broad road in urban area, and is effective for planning and design analysis. This study is expected that traffic experts can grasp correct intersection's capacity and carry out a proper planning or improvement by applying the ICU method to planning and design analysis.
