The ligand, 2,10-dibenzyl-4,6,8-trioxo-3,9-diaza undecane dioic acid(DTDA) for the extraction of uranium was synthesized under dry nitrogen from phenylalanine and 3-oxoglutaric acid. Extraction was performed by stirring a solution of DTDA in dichloromethane for 1 hour with an aqueous solution of $UO_2(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ at various pH values and at different $DTDA/UO_2{^{2+}}$ molar ratios. Extraction efficiency reaches a maximum when the pH of the aqueous phase was ca 8.0. The extraction percentage was affected by concentration of DTDA and increases with the $DTDA/UO_2{^{2+}}$ molar ratio to complete extraction with a 4 fold excess of DTDA. The high selectivity of the DTDA for uranium was ascertained by competition experiments with other cations. The bound uranyl ion was quantitatively liberated within few minutes from the organic phase by treatment with an aqueous 1M HCI solution and DTDA was recovered very satisfactorily from the organic phase. The values of the over-all formation constants of the complex between uranyl ion and DTDA were determined to be the following : ${\beta}_1=1.20{\times}10^5\;,\;{\beta}_2=1.01{\times}10^8$.
The aims of the present study are to examine the precipitation of uranyl ion in the culture of Desulfovibrio desulfricans for the sedimentary recovery of aqueous uranium. D. desulfricans had the highest utilization rate of lactate and precipitated iron ion in the three sulfate reducing bacteria. So, subsequent experiments were conducted using lactate as an energy source. The normal growth was observed with increased pH and lactate utilization. During the culture, the amounts of SO42- consumed and S2- produced in aqueous phase were 8.5 and 7.5 mmol/m3-broth, respectively.

In this study, extraction of uranium(VI) from an aqueous nitric acid solution was investigated using tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) as an extractant in an ionic liquid, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Cnmim][Tf2N]). The distribution ratio of U(VI) in 1.1 M TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] was significantly high when the concentration of nitric acid was low. The value of the distribution ratio decreased as the concentration of the nitric acid increased at lower acidities, and then increased with a nitric acid concentration of up to 8 M. This can be attributed to the different extraction mechanisms of U(VI) based on nitric acid concentrations. Thus, a cation exchange at low acidity levels and an ion-pair extraction at high acidity levels were suggested as the extraction mechanism of U(VI) in the TBP/[Cnmim][Tf2N] system.
PP-g-(AN/Sty) was synthesized by grafting with acrylonitrile (AN) and styrene (Sty) onto PP staple fiber using an electron beam accelerator and followed by amidoximination and phosphorylation. Mole fraction of AN in the graft chain increased with the increase of the AN content in the monomer mixture. The highest AN grafting yield of 45% was obtained at a monomer ratio of 40 vol% AN/60 vol% Sty. Mole fraction of AN in the graft chain decreased with the increase of methanol amount used its solvent. As reaction temperature increased, the grafting yield of copolymer increased and reached equilibrium at 50$^{\circ}C$. Amount of amidoxime group in fibrous ion exchanger was increased as increasing amount of hydroxylamine, and the maximum content of amidoxime group was observed at 5.8 mmol/g with the 9 wt% hydroxylamine concentration. Content of phosphorous group in fibrous ion exchanger increased up to 0.5 N phosphoric acid concentration, and then leveled off. The adsorption ability of the copolymer for uranyl ion by the chelating adsorbents was in the following order : bifunctional PP-g-(AN/sty) > amidoximated PP-g-(AN/Sty) > phosphorylated PP-g-(AN/Sty).

Fibrous adsorbents containing amidoxime group which make chelate complexes with uranyl ions are studied for the recovery of uranium from sea water. Acrylic fibers are used as base Polymer. The adsorption properties of uranium are carried out to examine pH effect, concen-tration dependence, adsorption rate, separation, and chelate complex. The results obtained are as follows; 1. Metal capacity of U (VI) ion is in the range of pH $2\~10.2$. Amidoxime group-containing fiber recover U (VI) ions existed in sea water or waste water in extremely small quantities. 3. Using amidoxime group-containing fiber Cu (II) and U (VI) are separated with each other in dilute nitric acid solution (pH 2.3). 4. U (VI) chelate complexes are conformed by tridendate ligands, which are coordinated with one nitrogen and two oxygens onto amidoxime group-containing fiber.
Plant species have shown the capability to absorb U into the biomass. Norman(l952) even suggested that uranyl ion acts as an accessory microelement in growth of Lemna and flax roots. The plants, termed metal hyperaccumulators, can extract and accumulate more than 1000-10,000mg heavy metal per kilogram of dry weight of plants (0.1-1%). The most vital main factors influencing the ability and efficiency of phytoremediation is the ability of the plant to uptake the metals from soil before the accumulation mechanism happens in the plant tissue. An electrolysis system with a vertically circulating mercury capillary bundle electrode was developed with a very large electrode area in a minimum space. This system was operated by forcedly feeding mercury and aqueous solution containing metal ion into a fiber bundle packed densely within a small porous glass tube. In order to test the characteristics and stability of the electrolysis system, the reduction voltammograms of uranyl and ferric ions were measured with changes of the mercury flow rate and the aqueous flow rate. The aqueous flow rate had a large effect on the electrochemical reaction of metal ion occurring at the interface between the mercury and the aqueous solution and had to be regulated as an appropriate value to have a good limiting current shape. The limiting current was linearly proportional to the aqueous flow rate, and complete reductions of uranyl and ferric ions were rapidly and continuously accomplished at the potential showing limiting current. With a mercury flow rate high enough to keep a capillary continuum of mercury in the fiber bundle, the mercury flow rate had almost no effect on the electrochemical reaction. This system was confirmed to be effective and stable enough to control rapidly and continuously the oxidation state of metal ions fed into the system under an appropriate aqueous flow rate.

A new static contractor using capillary phenomena induced by a highly packed fiber bundle was developed for the solvent extraction. When two immiscible phases being cocurrently and forcedly fed into the packed fiber bundle, the contactor brings about a very large liquid-liquid contact area for mass transfer within a small definite space without any turbulence and drop phenomena. In order to test the characteristics and stability of the static contractor system, continuous extraction experiments of TBP-uranyl ion-nitric acid system were done and compared with the batch extraction experiment of the same chemical system. The performance of the static contractor were the same as that of the ideal batch extractor with the same extraction condition. For the increase of the extraction yield by the contactor, the increase of organic flow rate was required at a fixed aqueous flow rate, and a certain residence time of the aqueous phase flow within the contactor system had to be maintained to meet the performance of the batch system of the same phase ratio. The residence time in the case of TBP-uranyl ion-nitric acid system was about 1.9 minutes. This system was confirmed to be effective and stable enough for purposes of the kinetic study of solvent extraction as well as the mutual separation and purification of ordinary materials because of good reproducibility and the stable and large static liquid-liquid contact area.
Epoxy-activated chitin was synthesized by the reaction of epichlorohydrin with chitin which was isolated from waste marine sources such as crab shell. Followed by the reaction of epoxy-activated chitin with hexamethylenediamine, the aminohexyl chitin was synthesized. The aminohexyl chitin was subsequently reacted with epichlorohydrin to prepare the epoxy-activated aminohexyl chitin. Finally, the tannin-immobilized chitin (Resin I) was synthsized by the reaction of tannin solution with epoxy-activated aminohexyl chitin. Using silane coupling agent, the tannin-immobilized chitosan(Resin II) was synthesized by the reaction of $\gamma$-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane with chitosan which was prepared by the deacetylation of chitin. Upon the pH variation, adsorptivities of these immobilized tannins to the metal ions such as $Cu^{+2}$, $Ni^{+2}$, $Cr^{+6}$, $Co^{+2}$, $Ca^{+2}$, $Pb^{+2}$, $Ba^{+2}$, and $UO_2{^{+2}}$ ions were determined by batch method. The adsorptivity tendencies of these immobilized tannin to the most of metallic ions were increased with pH. Furthermore, the adsorptivities of Resin(I) and Resin(II) upon the variation of pH, contact time, amount of resin and concentration of metal ion were investigated. As a result, it was found that these immobilized tannin on both chitin and chitosan showed good adsorptivities for uranyl ion.
Distribution coefficients (Kd) of uranyl ion onto divinylbenzene amidoxime resins were measured in sodium carbonate solution and the Kd values were increased up to about 70 as the resin bead size was decreased. At a condition of 0.0044 M $Na_2CO_3$, the adsorption capacity for uranium was $3.4{\mu}mole$ U/g-resin. The Kd values in the 0.5 M $Na_2CO_3-NaHCO_3$ solution, ranging from pH 9 to pH 11, revealed that they were increased as the pH increased and revealed lower values than those in the pure sodium carbonate solution. The amidoxime resins were characterized by FTIR-ATR showing the absorption bands of the amidoxime functional groups. A species of the uranyltricarbonate complex, $UO_2(CO_3)_3^{-4}$, was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, revealing four absorption peaks between 400 and 500 nm. Uranium was separated from some fission products by a column operation. However, most of the uranium and fission products were eluted before an adsorption and only a small amount of uranium was adsorbed onto the resin due to the low capacity of the resin.
