  • The average annual water quality at Yongchon Bridge, Bonggok 2 Bridge, and Gasuwon Bridge in upstream of Gapcheon in 2018 was Ib grade (good) in organic matters, including BOD and TOC compared to the local environmental standard in Daejeon. However, their monthly changes for TOC partially exceeded the standard during the busy farming season at Bonggok 2 Bridge and Gasuwon Bridge. Although the annual average TP was within the standard, the monthly change at Bonggok 2 Bridge partially exceeded the standard. For Dugyecheon, the annual average water quality in 2018 at Umyeon-dong Bridge and Wonjeong Bridge, which are downstream of the Gyeryong public sewage treatment plant, exceeded the local environmental standard in BOD. COD was exceeded, and TP was within the standard. It seemed that the causes of deteriorated water quality downstream of Dugyecheon were discharges of agricultural water from agricultural land and effluent from the Gyeryong public sewage treatment plant. Assuming the pollution load of 100% based at the Mulangil point of the mainstream of Gapcheon, the ratio of BOD load and TOC load were as high as 58% and 47%, respectively. At the basin of Bonggok 2 Bridge and Mulangil, the loads downstream of Dugyecheon including the Gyeryong public sewage treatment plant were as high as 43% for TN and 56% for TP, respectively, indicating that Dugyecheon had a major impact on the water quality at the mainstream of Gapcheon.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how the landscape characteristics and the physical factors of landscape would affect the preference for the Gapcheon in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The Gapcheon was divided in three sections of the outskirts, Expopark areas, and residential complexes. After selecting seven landscape points where the sections could be expressed best, photographs were taken both in the upstream and downstream direction. The questionnaire used to evaluate the river's landscape included 20 items of adverbs that described the form of the river and one item to rate the overall preference. By analyzing the 14 pictures taken, the occupancy rates of the landscape elements in terms of the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structures. Image factor analysis was conducted for each of the sections in order to analyze the landscape characteristics of the Gapcheon, and then regression analysis was conducted in order to analyze the relationships among the physical factors influencing the preference of the landscapes. The results were as follows : Factors that compose the visual characters of urban river were classified be the aesthetic factor, the emotional factor and the situation factor. These 3 factors showed a 65.8% total variance. The river landscape with the biggest preference was the one from the Daedeok Grand Bridge as the occupancy area of the mountain, sky, and river was large and distributed evenly and the vegetation of the river was in a good harmony with the surroundings. After carrying out regression analysis to examine the relationships between the visual preference of Gapcheon and the physical factors of landscape(the sky, river, vegetation of the river, mountain, and artificial structure), the following regressions model was made : PRE=5.906+0.017(river)-0.053(artificial structure)-0.060(vegetation of the river) (R-square=0.48).

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of increasing instream flow at Gapcheon stream of Daejeon city by considering two virtual reservoirs upstream, respectively; Geum-gok reservoir and Koe-gok reservoir upstream, respectively. The paralleled and cascaded reservoir operations were performed including the existing Jang-an and Bang-dong reservoirs. The results are summarized as follows. Firstly, from the Bang-dong and Geum-gok cascaded reservoir's water balance analysis, instream flow of $6.83Mm^3$ was able to be supplied to downstream, and water supply indexes of Geum-gok reservoir were analyzed to have the rate of water supply divided by watershed area of 403.4 mm, the rate of water supply divided by rainfall of 33.0 %, the rate of water supply divided by inflow of 96.4 %, the rate of water supply divided by storage capacity of 81.9 %, and the rate of inflow divided by storage capacity of 112.3 %. Secondly, from the Jang-an and Geum-gok paralleled reservoir's water balance analysis, flow durations at Gapcheon station were analyzed to have Q95 (the 95th high flow) of $4.806m^3/s$, Q185 (the 185th high flow) of $2.217m^3/s$, Q275 (the 275th high flow) of $1.140m^3/s$, and Q355 (the 355th high flow) of $0.887m^3/s$. Thirdly, inflow to Koe-gok reservoir was simulated including the Jang-an and Bang-dong paralleled reservoir's water balance analysis, instream flow of $49.60Mm^3$ was able to be supplied from Koe-gok reservoir to downstream, and water supply indexes of Koe-gok reservoir were analyzed to have the rate of water supply divided by watershed area of 246.5 mm, the rate of water supply divided by rainfall of 19.4 %, the rate of water supply divided by inflow of 40.8 %, the rate of water supply divided by storage capacity of 412.1 %, and the rate of inflow divided by storage capacity of 1,189.8 %. Fourthly, daily streamflows at Gapcheon stream were simulated including outflows from Koe-gok reservoir, flow durations at Gapcheon station were analyzed to have Q95 (the 95th high flow) of $4.501m^3/s$, Q185 (the 185th high flow) of $2.277m^3/s$, Q275 (the 275th high flow) of $1.743m^3/s$, and Q355 (the 355th high flow) of $1.564m^3/s$. The conclusion appeared that the effect of increasing instream flow at Gapcheon stream from Koe-gok reservoir was more higher than that from Geum-gok reservoir.

  • Freshwater soundness can be broadly divided into the health of river ecosystems and social services for human water use, that is, water welfare. In this study the ecological soundness and water welfare index of rivers were calculated, and the freshwater comprehensive soundness was analyzed using the quadrant model for 14 basins in the Geum River basin. As for the ecological soundness of the river, the area upstream of the dam (based on Daecheong Dam) was evaluated as 'good', and the area downstream of the dam was evaluated as 'bad'. On the other hand as for water welfare, the area downstream of the dam with a large population was in a relatively 'good' condition, and the area upstream of the dam had a relatively 'poor' level of water welfare. In terms of freshwater comprehensive soundness, it was found that the basins of Mujunamdaecheon, Bocheongcheon and Daecheongdam showed good ecological soundness and water welfare, and the Geumganggongju, Nonsancheon and Geumganhagueon basins were all poor. The Gapcheon basin showed good results in 2014 due to continuous investment and systematic management. Therefore, it is necessary to find ways to utilize it for other watersheds through benchmarking.

  • Phytoplankton community is one of the important factors for the management of aquatic environment due to generation of varying toxins by harmful algal species. This study was performed to examine the phytoplankton community structure (PCS) in the midstream of Geum River (GR) from January 2014 to December 2015. The water sampling was performed in five stations on 2014, and three stations on 2015. Subsequently, the morphological identification was performed by microscopic observation in laboratory condition. As results, total 265 species were identified and it was comprised of 40.8% of Bacillariophyceae, 9.1% of Cyanophyceae, 44.5% of Chlorophyceae, and the others (4.9%). During the investigation period, total average standing crop of phytoplankton was $12,948cells\;mL^{-1}$, and it was comprised of $7,702cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Bacillariophyceae, $2,821cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Cyanophyceae, $2,121cells\;mL^{-1}$ of Chlorophyceae, and $305cells\;mL^{-1}$ of others. To verify which tributaries of upstream area influence on PCS of midstream of GR, the phytoplankton standing crops of two stations including Mihocheon (MH) and Gapcheon (GC) were examined on 2014, and compared to result of on 2015. The results were shown that the MH station had more similar phytoplankton standing crops with midstream of GR than GC station. The relationship between environmental parameters and phytoplankton dynamics was studied at the investigated station. As results, whereas water temperature and total phosphorus were represented the positive correlation, N/P ratio was remarkably exhibited negative correlation. From the results, it is suggested that the PCS of midstream of GR was more affected by MH station than GC station, and the changes of temperature, phosphorus concentration, and N/P ratio may be important factors on the PCS formation of midstream of GR.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish a system to evaluate the ecological soundness of the Geum river basin. The study target area is 14 sub-watersheds of the Geum river basin. For the selection of indicators to ensure transparency and consistency of the evaluation indicators, the ecological soundness indicators were secured by using the indicator adjustment method derived in consideration of the intrinsic weight change characteristics between indicators. The index with the greatest impact on the final composite index was identified as the index of the aquatic ecology among the water quantity, water quality, aquatic ecology, and habitat-riparian environment dimensions. As a result of analyzing the ecological health index of the river, the watershed upstream of the dam (based on the Daecheong -dam) was evaluated to be in relatively good condition until 2014 compared to the base year(2008), and the watershed downstream of the dam was evaluated to be in a poor condition. The annual trend of changes in the ecological soundness index on an annual basis is as follows. In the case of Yongdamdam, Yongdamdamdownstream, Bocheong-chun, Daechungdam, Daechungdamdownstream, and Nonsancheon, although there are differences by time period, the soundness index is in declining. On the other hand, Mujunamdaecheon, Yeongdongcheon, and Gapcheon were evaluated to have improved soundness, while Chogang, Daechungdamupstream, Mihocheon, Gongjugeumgang, and Geumgangestuary were evaluated to deteriorate again after soundness was improved.
