From the traffic analysis, and model constructions and verifications for speed prediction on the freeway ramp junctions with 70mph speed limit, the following results were obtained : ⅰ) The traffic flow distribution showed a big difference depending on the time periods. Especially, more traffic flows were concentrated on the freeway junctions in the morning peak period when compared with the afternoon peak period. ⅱ) The occupancy distribution was also shown to be varied by a big difference depending on the time periods. Especially, the occupancy in the morning peak period showed over 100% increase when compared with the 24hours average occupancy, and the occupancy in the afternoon peak period over 25% increase when compared with the same occupancy. ⅲ) The speed distribution was not shown to have a big difference depending on the time periods. Especially, the speed in the morning peak period showed 10mph decrease when compared with the 24hours'average speed, but the speed did not show a big difference in the afternoon peak period. ⅳ) The analyses of variance showed a high explanatory power between the speed predictive models(SPM) constructed and the variables used, especially the upstream speed. ⅴ) The analysis of correlation for verifying the speed predictive models(SPM) constructed on the ramp junctions were shown to have a high correlation between observed data and predicted data. Especially, the correlation coefficients showed over 0.95 excluding the unstable condition on the diverge section. ⅵ) Speed predictive models constructed were shown to have the better results than the HCM models, even if the speed limits on the freeway were different between the HCM models and speed predictive models constructed.

This paper presents a research result that was performed to develop a more accurate freeway crash prediction model than existing models. While the existing crash models only focus on developing crash relationships associated with highway geometric conditions found on a short section of a crash site, this research applies a different approach considering the upstream highway geometric conditions as well. Theoretically, crashes occur while motorists are in motion, and particularly at freeways vehicle speed at one specific point is very sensitive to upstream geometric conditions. Therefore, this is a reasonable approach. To form the analysis data base, this research gathers the geometric conditions of the West Seaside Freeway 269.3 km and six years crash data ranging 2003-2008 for these freeway sections. As a result, it is found that crashes fit well into Negative Binomial Distribution, and, based on the developed model, total number of crashes is inversely proportional to highway curve length and radius. Contrarily, crash occurrences are proportional to tangent length. This result is different from existing crash study results, and it seems to be resulted from this research assumption that a crash is influenced greatly by upstream geometric conditions. Also, this research provides the expected effects on crash occurrences of the length of downgrade sections, speed camera placements, and the on- and off- ramp presences. It is expected that this research result is useful for doing more reasonable highway designs and safety audit analysis, and applying the same research approach to national roads and other major roads in urban areas is recommended.
The joint distribution of wind speed and wind direction at a bridge site is vital to the estimation of the basic wind speed, and hence to the wind-induced vibration analysis of long-span bridges. Instead of the conventional way relying on the weather stations, this study proposed an alternate approach to obtain the original records of wind speed and the corresponding directions based on field measurement supported by the Structural Health Monitoring System (SHMS). Specifically, SHMS of Sutong Cable-stayed Bridge (SCB) is utilized to study the basic wind speed with directional information. Four anemometers are installed in the SHMS of SCB: upstream and downstream of the main deck center, top of the north and south tower respectively. Using the recorded wind data from SHMS, the joint distribution of wind speed and direction is investigated based on statistical methods, and then the basic wind speeds in 10-year and 100-year recurrence intervals at these four key positions are calculated. Analytical results verify the reliability of the recorded wind data from SHMS, and indicate that the joint probability model for the extreme wind speed at SCB site fits well with the Weibull model. It is shown that the calculated basic wind speed is reduced by considering the influence of wind direction. Compared to the design basic wind speed in the Specification of China, basic wind speed considering the influence of direction or not is much smaller, indicating a high safety coefficient in the design of SCB. The results obtained in this study can provide not only references for further wind-resistance research of SCB, but also improve the understanding of the safety coefficient for wind-resistance design of other engineering structures in the similar area.

Variable speed limit(VSL) is one of the highway ITS techniques designed to prevent accidents and traffic slow down by reducing congestion or speed variation between vehicles and lanes prior to arrive at the accident location by limiting speed. In Korea, while people have recognized the need for variable speed limit beginning with Seoul's urban expressway and installed facilities in order to provide guide for speed limit per lane and lane use, there has not been enough development of algorithm for internal administration as well as research on the basic principles behind administering variable speed limit. This study is for modeling and evaluating the VSL strategies based on the traffic flow theory. Supply-Demand method of the Cell Transmission Model is applied to demonstrate the traffic features and shockwaves to upstream of the bottleneck with/without VSL. We verified the explanation of Cell Transmission Model for the numerical example. and as the result, it is found that VSL strategies can reduce the total travel time in the congested section and variation of the speed. It means VSL is useful to improve the traffic condition and the safety on highway

Boundary condition is one of the major factors to influence the numerical stability and solution accuracy in numerical analysis. One of the most important physical boundary conditions in the flowfield analysis is the wall boundary condition imposed on the body surface. To solve a two-dimensional Euler equation, totally four numerical wall boundary conditions should be prescribed. Two of them are supplied by the flow tangency condition. The other two conditions, therefore, should be prepared additionally in a suitable way. In this paper, four different sets of wall boundary conditions are proposed and then applied to solve high-speed flowfields around a quarter circle geometry. A two-dimensional compressible Euler solver is prepared based on the finite volume method. This solver hires three different upwind schemes; Steger-Warmings flux vector splitting, Roes flux difference splitting, and Lious advection upstream splitting method. It is found that the way to specify the additional numerical wall boundary conditions strongly affects the overall stability and accuracy of the upwind schemes in high-speed flow calculation. The optimal wall boundary conditions should be also chosen very carefully depending on the numerical schemes used to solve the problem.
An ionization front (IF) surrounding an H II region is a sharp interface through which a cold neutral gas makes transition to a warm ionized phase by absorbing UV photons from central massive stars. We investigate the structure and instability of a plane-parallel D-type IF threaded by magnetic fields parallel to the front. We find that magnetic fields increase the maximum propagation speed of the IFs, while reducing the expansion factor, defined as the density ratio of neutral to ionized phases. IFs become unstable to distortional perturbations due to gas expansion across the fronts, exactly analogous to the Darrieus-Landau instability of ablation fronts in terrestrial flames. The growth rate of the IF instability is proportional linearly to the perturbation wavenumber as well as the upstream flow speed. The IF instability is stabilized by gas compressibility and becomes completely quenched when the front is D-critical. The instability is also stabilized by magnetic pressure when the perturbations propagate in the direction perpendicular to the fields. When the perturbations propagate in the direction parallel to the fields, on the other hand, it is magnetic tension that reduces the growth rate, completely suppressing the instability when ${\beta}$ < 1.5, with ${\beta}$ denoting the square of the ratio of the sound speed to the Alfven speed in the pre-IF region. When the front experiences an acceleration, the IF instability cooperates with the Rayleigh-Taylor instability to make the front more unstable. We discuss potential effects of IF instability on the evolution and dynamics of IFs in the interstellar medium.
In recent decades, microscopic simulation models have become powerful tools to analyze traffic flow on highways and to assist the investigation of level of service. The existing microscopic simulation models simulate an individual vehicle's speed based on a constant free-flow speed dominantly specified by users and driver's behavior models reflecting vehicle interactions, such as car following and lane changing. They set a single free-flow speed for a single vehicle on a given link and neglect to consider the effects of highway design elements to it in their internal simulation. Due to this, the existing models are limitted to provide with identical simulation results on both curved and tangent sections of highways. This paper presents a model developed to estimate the change of free-flow speeds based on highway design elements. Nine neural network models were trained based on the field data collected from seven different freeway curve sections and three different locations at each section to capture the percent changes of free-flow speeds: 100 m upstream of the point of curve (PC) and the middle of the curve. The model employing seven highway design elements as its input variables was selected as the best : radius of curve, length of curve, superelevation, the number of lanes, grade variations, and the approaching free-flow speed on 100 m upstream of PC. Tests showed that the free-flow speeds estimated by the proposed model were statistically identical to the ones from the field at 95% confidence level at each three different locations described above. The root mean square errors at the starting and the middle of curve section were 6.68 and 10.06, and the R-squares at these points were 0.77 and 0.65, respectively. It was concluded from the study that the proposed model would be one of the potential tools introducing the effects of highway design elements to free-flow speeds in simulation.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and the results are compared to the existing experimental data. Steady two-dimensional flow in a collapsible channel with initial tension is also simulated and the results are compared with numerical solutions from the literature. Computational results show that as cross-sectional area decreases with the reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches the maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near the unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicating the flow limitation or choking (flow speed equals wave speed) in one-dimensional studies. for further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. The flow limitation or choking consist of the main reasons of waterfall effect which occurs in the airways, capillaries of lung, and other veins. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is 2, the area throat is located near the downstream end. As this ratio is increased to 3, the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube.
An expansion device plays an important role in optimizing the heat pumps by controlling refrigerant flow and balancing the system pressures. Conventional expansion devices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves due to increasing focus on comfort, energy conservation, and application of a variable speed compressor. In addition, the amount of refrigerant charge in a heat pump is another primary parameter influencing system performance. In this study, the flow characteristics of the expansion devices are analyzed, and the effects of refrigerant charge amount on the performance of the heat pump and the variation of compressor speed are investigated at various operating conditions. Mass flow rate through capillary tube, short tube orifice, and EEV was strongly dependent on the upstream pressure and subcooling. The heat pump system is very sensitive with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. The performance of it can be optimized by adjusting the flow rate through expansion device to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.
