An implicit turbulent flow solver is developed for 2-D unstructured hybrid meshes. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an upwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by an implicit backward Euler time stepping scheme. Flow turbulence effects are modeled by the Spalart-Allmaras one equation model, which is coupled with wall function. The numerical method is applied for flows on a flat plate, the NACA 0012 airfoil, and the Douglas 3 element airfoil. The results are compared with experimental data.
A calculation model is developed to predict the transient free surface flow on the containment floor following a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) of pressurized water reactors (PWR) for the use of debris transport evaluation. The model solves the two-dimensional Shallow Water Equation (SWE) using a finite volume method (FVM) with unstructured triangular meshes. The numerical scheme is based on a fully explicit predictor-corrector method to achieve a fast-running capability and numerical accuracy. The Harten-Lax-van Leer (HLL) scheme is used to reserve a shock-capturing capability in determining the convective flux term at the cell interface where the dry-to-wet changing proceeds. An experiment simulating a sudden break of a water reservoir with L-shape open channel is calculated for validation of the present model. It is shown that the present model agrees well with the experiment data, thus it can be justified for the free surface flow with accuracy. From the calculation of flow field over the simplified containment floor of APR1400, the important phenomena of free surface flow including propagations and interactions of waves generated by local water level distribution and reflection with a solid wall are found and the transient flow rates entering the Holdup Volume Tank (HVT) are obtained within a practical computational resource.
A simple, accurate and efficient mesh generation technique, the cut-cell method, is able to represent an arbitrarily complex geometry. Both structured and unstructured grid meshes are used in this method. First, the numerical domain is constructed with regular Cartesian grids as a background grid and then the solid boundaries or bodies are cut out of the background Cartesian grids. As a result, some boundary cells can be contained two numerical conditions such as the flow and solid conditions, where the special treatment is needed to simulate such physical characteristics. The HLLC approximate Riemann solver, a Godunov-type finite volume method, is employed to discretize the advection terms in the governing equations. Also, the TVD-WAF method is applied on the Cartesian cut-cell grids to stabilize numerical results. Present method is validated for the rectangular dam break problems. Initially, a conventional grid is constructed with the Cartesian regular mesh only and then applied to the dam-break flow simulation. As a comparative simulation, a cut-cell grids are applied to represent the flow domain rotated with arbitrary angles. Numerical results from this study are compared with the results from the case of the Cartesian regular mesh only. A good agreement is achieved with other numerical results presented in the literature.
In this paper, the cavitating flows around a hydrofoil have been numerically investigated by using a 2-d multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. A dual-time stepping method and the Gauss-Seidel iteration were used for unsteady time integration. The phase change rate between the liquid and vapor phases was determined by Merkle's cavitation model based on the difference between local and vapor pressure. Steady state calculations were made for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil at several flow conditions. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the pressure coefficient on a hydrofoil surface. Additional calculation was made for cloud cavitation around the hydrofoil. The observation of the vapor structure, such as cavity size and shape, was made, and the flow characteristics around the cavity were analyzed. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the frequency and the Strouhal number of cavity oscillation.
Acoustic pressure field around the cross-flow fan is predicted by a hydrodynamic-acoustic splitting method. Unsteady flow field is obtained by solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations using an unstructured finite-volume method on the triangular meshes, while the acoustic waves generated inside the cross-flow fan are predicted by solving the perturbed compressible equations(PCE) with a 6th-order compact finite difference method. Computational results show that the acoustic waves of BPF tone are generated by interactions of the blades wakes with the stabilizer, which then are reflected from the rear-guider and mainly propagate towards the fan inlet. Also, a directivity of BPF noise predicted by the PCE is noticeably different from that of the FW-H equations, in which a fan casing effect cannot be included.
In general, FDM(finite difference method) and FVM(finite volume method) are used for analyzing the fluid flow numerically. However it is difficult to apply them to problems involving complex geometries, multi-connected domains, and complex boundary conditions. On the contrary, FEM(finite element method) with coordinates transformation for the unstructured grid is effective for the complex geometries. Most of previous studies have used commercial codes such as KIVA or STAR-CD for the flow analyses in the engine cylinder, and these codes are mostly based on the FVM. In the present study, using the FEM for three-dimensional, unsteady, and incompressible Navier-Stokes equation, the velocity and pressure fields in the engine cylinder have been numerically analyzed. As a numerical algorithm, 4-step time-splitting method is used and ALE(arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) method is adopted for moving grids. In the Piston-Cylinder, the calculated results show good agreement in comparison with those by the FVM and the experimental results by the LDA.
A three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes for the simulation of steady and unsteady flowfields around a generic fighter aircraft and for the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between the external stores and the tail surfaces. The flow solver is based on a vertex-centered finite-volume method and an implicit point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a steady flow and the computed results were compared with experimental data. An unsteady time-accurate computation of the generic fighter aircraft with external stores at transonic flight conditions showed that the external stores cause undesirable vibration on the horizontal tail surface due to the mutual interference between their wake and the horizontal tail surface. It was shown that downward deflection of the trailing edge flap significantly reduces the undesirable interference effect.
Purpose: The architectural structures in the engineering field include more than one material, and the heat transfer through these multiple materials becomes complicated. More or less, the analytic solutions obtained by the hand calculation can provide the limited information of heat transfer phenomena. However, the engineers have generally been forced to obtain reliable results than those of the hand calculation. The numerical calculation such as a finite volume methods with the unstructured grid system is only the suitable means of the analysis for the complex and arbitrary domains that consists of multiple materials. In this study, a new numerical code is developed to provide temperature distributions in the multiple material domains, and the results of this code are compared with the validation cases in ISO10211. Method: Finite volume methods with an unstructured grid is employed. In terms of numerical methods, the heat transfer conduction coefficient is not defined on the surface of the cell between different material cells. The heat transfer coefficient is properly defined to accurately mimic the heat transfer through the surface. The boundary conditions of heat flux considering radiation or heat convection are also developed. Result: The comparison between numerical results and ISO 10211 cases. We are confirmed that the numerical method provides the proper temperature distributions, and the heat transfer equation and its boundary conditions are developed properly.
The unsteady flow past a circular cylinder which starts rotating or rotary oscillating impulsively from rest in a viscous fluid is investigated for Reynolds numbers Re=200 and 1000, rectilinear speed ratios ${\alpha}$ between 0.5 and 5.0, and forced oscillating frequencies $f_s$ between 0.1 and 2.0. Numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations are obtained by using a finite volume method on an unstructured colocated grid. The objective of the study is to examine the effect of the rotating and rotary oscillating circular cylinder on the flow patterns and dynamics loads. The numerical results reveal that the $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ vortex street vanishes entirely behind the rotating cylinder when the ratio ${\alpha}$ exceeds the critical value, and the vortex shedding behind the rotary oscillating cylinder undergoes mainly three modes named 'synchronization', 'competition' and 'natural shedding' with the increase of $f_s$. Based on the amplitude spectra analysis of the lift coefficients, the regions of the classification of flow structure modes are presented, which provide important references for the flow control in the ocean engineering.

The numerical experiment has been conducted to investigate the unsteady shock wave reflecting phenomena. The cell-vertex finite-volume, Roe's upwind flux difference splitting method with unstructured grid is implemented to solve unsteady Euler equations. The $4^{th}$-order Runge-Kutta method is applied for time integration. A linear reconstruction of the flux vector using the least-square method is applied to obtain the $2^{nd}$-order accuracy for the spatial derivatives. For a better resolution of the shock wave and slipline, the dynamic grid adaptation technique is adopted. The new concept of grid adaptation technique, which is much simpler than that of conventional techniques, is introduced for the current study. Three error indicators (divergence and curl of velocity, and gradient of density) are used for the grid adaptation procedure. Considering the quality of the solution and the numerical efficiency, the grid adaptation procedure was updated up to $2^{nd}$ level at every 20 time steps. For the convenience of comparison with other experimental and analytical results, the case of interaction between the straight incoming shock wave and a sharp wedge is simulated for various flow conditions. The numerical results show good agreement with other experimental and analytical results, in the shock wave reflecting structure, slipline, and the trajectory of the triple points. Some critical cases show disagreement with the analytical results, but these cases also have been proven to show hysteresis phenomena.
