This research focuses on simulation and visualization of flow field characteristics inside a centrifugal pump. The 3D numerical analysis was carried out by using a numerical CFD tool, addressing a Reynolds Average Navier-Stock code with a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ two-equation turbulence model. The simulation accounts for friction head loss due to rough walls at suction, impeller, discharge areas and volumetric head loss at impeller wear ring. A comparison of performance curves between simulation and experimentation is included, and it reveals a same trend of those results with a small difference of maximum 5 %. At best efficiency point, velocity vectors are smooth but it changes significantly under off-design point, a strong recirculation appears at the outlet of impeller passages near tongue area. A relatively uniform preassure distribution was observed around the impeller in despite of the tongue. Within the volute, because of its geometry, spiral vortexes formed, proving that the flow field in this region was relatively turbulent and unsteady.

Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modem air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras($1280pixel{\times}1024pixel$) were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

This paper presents the effect of a grid system on the performance of a small Savonius wind turbine installed side-by-side. Turbine performance is compared using three different grid systems; tetrahedral grid having a concentrated circular grid around turbine rotors, the tetrahedral grid having a concentrated rectangular grid around turbine rotors and the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid. The commercial code, SC/Tetra has been used to solve the three-dimensional unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis in the present study. The Savonius turbine rotor has a rotational diameter of 0.226m and an aspect ratio of 1.0. The distance between neighboring rotor tips keeps the same length of the rotor diameter. The variations of pressure and power coefficient are compared with respect to blade rotational angles and rotating frequencies of the turbine blade. Throughout the comparisons of three grid systems, it is noted that the symmetric grid having a concentrated tetrahedral grid near the turbine rotor blades and a hexahedral grid has a stable performance compared to the other ones.

DES method is applied to an axisymmetric base flow at supersonic mainstream. The model is based on the Spalart-Allmaras (S-A) turbulence model in the RANS mode, and is based on the subgrid scale model in the Large-eddy simulation (LES) mode. Accurate predictions of the base flowfield and base pressure are successfully achieved by using the DES methodology which is less expensive than LES. Flow properties at the edge of base, such as boundary layer thickness, momentum thickness and skin fraction are compared with Dutton et al [experimental data to proper prediction of base flowfiled. From the present results, The DES accurately resolves the physics of unsteady turbulent motions, such as shear layer rollup, large-eddy motions in the downstream region and small eddy motions inside the recirculating region. Moreover, The present results of using an empirical constant $C_{DES}$ of 1.2 shows good agreement with experimental data than conventional empirical constant $C_{DES}$ of 0.65.

Combustion Instabilities are caused by a coupling between acoustic waves and unsteady heat release. They can be eliminated using passive controller such as a Helmholtz resonator. But, Helmholtz resonator is normally only effective over a narrow frequency range. In this work, Helmholtz resonator is applied for reducing the combustion oscillations and we vary the Helmholtz resonator volume using piston in oder to tune in the wide range of operating conditions. As the result, it is found that the dominant combustion oscillations can be largely reduced by optimizing the size of resonator volume. And, interesting relation for phase difference of dynamic pressure both combustor and the helmholtz resonator are presented in this paper. Also, we investigate semi-active control using Helmholtz equation and phase difference.

The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method can identify principal modes that optimally capture the energy content from large multi-dimensional data set. In this study unsteady pressure fields on the rotor blade surface of a helicopter in forward flight are expressed by a reduced order model based on the POD method. Special modes containing high energy are analyzed to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics in more efficient way. The CFD simulation of flowfields around helicopter rotor blade in hovering motion is also conducted to validate its prediction with experimental result. In the process 7 modes containing energy ratio 99% from 240 snapshots information are identified and utilized to construct a reduced order model.

This paper presents simple models for flow and the PIG dynamics when it passes through a $90^{\circ}$ curved section of pipeline. The simulation has been done with two different operational boundary conditions. The solution fur non-linear hyperbolic partial equations for flow is given by using MOC. The Runge-Kuta method is used to solve the initial condition equation fur flow and the PIG dynamics equation. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used fur estimating the PIG dynamics when the pig runs in the pipeline including curved section. In this paper, dynamic modeling and its analysis for the PIG flow through $90^{\circ}$ curved pipe with compressible and unsteady flow are studied. The PIG dynamics model is derived by using Lagrange equation under assumption that it passes through 3 different sections in the curved pipeline such that it moves into, inside and out of the curved section. The downstream and up stream flow dynamics including the curved sections are solved using MOC. The effectiveness of the derived mathematical models is estimated by simulation results fur a low pressure natural gas pipeline including downward and upward curved sections. The simulation results show that the proposed model and solution can be used for estimating the PIG dynamics when we pig the pipeline including curved section.

According to the sequence of pintle operation, the performance characteristics of pintle nozzles are analyzed. The pintle movement was simulated using unsteady numerical techniques, the response lag and sensitivity at the chamber and nozzle are estimated for movable pintle. Three operation sequences of the pintle are considered for evaluating whether the rate of the chamber pressure increase and the operation sequence will have any significant impact towards the rocket performance. Three operation sequencies are as following; the pintle moves toward the nozzle throat, it turns instantly (case 1), stops at the nozzle throat for some time(0.5sec) (case 2), and stops at the nozzle throat (case 3). As a result, the dynamic characteristics according to the operation sequence and pintle shape were analyzed to take account the rocket performance.

Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.
Tall buildings are often subjected to steady and unsteady forces due to external wind flows. Measurement and mitigation of these forces becomes critical to structural design in engineering applications. Over the last few decades, many approaches such as modification of the external geometry of structures have been investigated to mitigate wind-induced load. One such proven geometric modification involved the rounding of sharp corners. In this work, we systematically analyze the impact of rounded corner radii on the reducing the flow-induced loading on a square cylinder. We perform 3-Dimensional (3D) simulations for high Reynolds number flows (Re=1 × 105) which are more likely to be encountered in practical applications. An Improved Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (IDDES) method capable of capturing flow accurately at large Reynolds numbers is employed in this study. The IDDES formulation uses a k-ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) model for near-wall modelling that prevents mesh-induced separation of the boundary layer. The effects of these corner modifications are analyzed in terms of the resulting variations in the mean and fluctuating components of the aerodynamic forces compared to a square cylinder with no geometric changes. Plots of the angular distribution of the mean and fluctuating coefficient of pressure along the square cylinder's surface illustrate the effects of corner modifications on the different parts of the cylinder. The windward corner's separation angle was observed to decrease with an increase in radius, resulting in a narrower and longer recirculation region. Furthermore, with an increase in radius, a reduction in the fluctuating lift, mean drag, and fluctuating drag coefficients has been observed.
