The present study is mainly motivated to investigate the vaporization, auto-ignition, and combustion of liquid fuel spray injected into high pressure environment. The unsteady, multi-dimensional models were used for realistic simulation of spray as well as prediction of accurate ignition delay time. The Separated Flow (SF) model which considers the finite rate of transport between liquid and gas phases was employed to represent the interactions between spray and gas field. Among the SF models, the Discrete Droplet Model (DDM) which simulates the spray using finite number of representative samples of discrete droplets was adopted. The Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation was used to analyze the two-phase interactions. In order to predict an evaporation rate of droplet in high pressure environment, the high pressure vaporization model was applied using thermodynamic equilibrium and phase equilibrium at droplet surface. The high pressure effect as well as high temperature effect was considered in the calculation of liquid and gas properties. In case of vaporization, an interaction between droplets was studied through the simulation of spray. The interaction is shown up differently whether the ambient gas field is at normal pressure or high pressure. Also, the characteristics of spray behavior in high pressure environment were investigated through the comparison with normal ambient pressure case. In both cases, the spray behaviors are simulated through the distributions of temperature and reaction rate in gas field.
Flickering behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated. Unsteady behaviors of the flame were monitored by a high speed ICCD camera and the flickering frequency was defined as the number of flame curvatures passing a fixed spatial point in a second. Unlike previous studies in which flames are in open condition so that the flickering mechanism is an unstable interaction of hot buoyant products with the ambient air, flames in this study are surrounded by a tube which means they are not open to ambient air, so that there is no interaction between hot buoyant products and ambient air. Despite the fact, there exists flickering phenomena and the flickering frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 50 Hz which is wider compared to previous studies. We relate the flickering mechanism to flame-generated vorticity and analytic solution for locally approximated flow is used. As a result, the relationship between flickering wavelength and dimensionless vorticity is acquired and the cause of higher range of flickering frequency is explained.

It is necessary to analyze the unsteady flow in the pipe network for the better operation and controls, but there are some problems in actual pipe network simulation, such as collecting a large amount of information in the field, operating highly upgraded computer system, and keeping a big storage device to run analysis program. The skeletonization method is used to cope with the problems in this paper. It is expected to reduce computation time, researcher's efforts, and costs for the analyzing the pipe network. The impact of individual pipe elements to the behavior of the water distribution system can be accounted in the process of skeletonization. However it is also important to study continuously about how to apply the skeletonization method for each of different cases, because inadequate uses may bring simulation to a false result. This paper introduces basic theories and skeletonizing examples in the actual pipe network in Dae-gu city.

Steam jets ejected from a rupture zone of high energy pipes may cause damage to adjacent structures. This event could lead to more serious accidents in nuclear power plants. Therefore, to prevent serious accidents, high energy pipes of nuclear power plants are designed according to the ANSI / ANS 58.2 technical standard. However, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC) has recently pointed out non-conservatism in existing high energy pipe fracture evaluation methods, and required the assessment of the unsteady load of the jet caused by a potential feedback mechanism as well as the impact range of steam jet, the jet impact loads and the blast wave effects at the initial breakage stage. The potential feedback mechanism refers to a phenomenon in which a vortex formed by impingement jets amplifies vortex itself and induces jet vibration in a shear layer. In this study, CFD methodology using the LES turbulence model is established and numerical analysis is carried out to evaluate the dynamic behavior of impingement jets and the potential feedback mechanism during jet impingement. Obtained results have been compared with an empirical correlation and experiment.
The natural convection in a horizontal enclosure heated from the bottom wall, cooled at the top wall, and having a square adiabatic body at its centered area was studied. Three different Prandtl numbers (0.01, 0.7 and 7) were considered for an effect of the Prandtl number on natural convection. A two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection was obtained, using Chebyshev spectral methodology for different Rayleigh numbers varying over the range of $10^4$ to $10^6$. It had been experimentally and numerically reported [1,2] that the heat transfer mode becomes oscillatory when Pr is out of a specific Pr band beyond the critical Ra. In this study, we reproduced this phenomenon numerically. The variation of time- and surface-averaged Nusselt numbers on the hot and cold walls for different Rayleigh numbers and Prandtl numbers was presented to show the overall heat transfer characteristics in the system. And also, the isotherms and streamline distributions were presented in detail to compare the physics related to their thermal behavior.

This paper introduces modeling and solution for the dynamics of pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow in natural gas pipeline. Without of bypass flow, the dynamic behavior of the PIG depends on the different pressure between the rear and nose parts, which is generated by injected gas flow behind the tail of the PIG and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. With bypass flow, the PIG dynamics also depends on the amount of bypass flow across its body. The mathematical model are derived for unsteady compressible flow of the PIG driving and expelled gas, and for dynamics of the PIG. The bypass flow is assumed to be incompressible with the condition of its Mach number smaller than 0.45. The method of characteristic (MOC) and the Runge-Kutta method are used to solve the system governing equations. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show that the derived mathematical model and the proposed solution are effective for estimation the dynamics of the PIG with and without bypass flow under given operational condition.

Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.
The turbulent flow in the rotor-stator mixer is based on shear characteristics generated by the interaction of the stator with the rotor rotating at high speed. In this study, the flow characteristics analysis of the unsteady state generated by the interaction of the rotor and the stator in the prototype model of the emulsion-fuel related mixer development was performed with the MRF and SMM by applying the ANSYS FLUENT $k-{\varepsilon}$ (RKE) turbulence model. The behavior and shear characteristics of the flow particles generated at the interface between the designed rotor and stator, and trends such as velocity distribution and turbulence eddy dissipation, were predicted and verified using the CFD analysis.

The aim of this paper is to numerically explore the feasibility of designing a Mini-Hydro turbine. The interest for this kind of horizontal axis turbine relies on its versatility. For instance, in the field of renewable energy, this kind of turbine may be considered for different applications, such as: tidal power, run-of-the-river hydroelectricity, wave energy conversion. It is fundamental to improve the turbine performance and to decrease the equipment costs for achievement of "environmental friendly" solutions and maximization of the "cost-advantage". In the present work, the commercial CFD code ANSYS is used to perform 3D simulations, solving the incompressible Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (U-RANS) equations discretized by means of a finite volume approach. The implicit segregated version of the solver is employed. The pressure-velocity coupling is achieved by means of the SIMPLE algorithm. The convective terms are discretized using a second order accurate upwind scheme, and pressure and viscous terms are discretized by a second-order-accurate centered scheme. A second order implicit time formulation is also used. Turbulence closure is provided by the realizable k - turbulence model. In this study, a mini hydro turbine (3kW) has been considered for utilization of horizontal axis impeller. The turbine performance and flow behavior have been evaluated by means of numerical simulations. Moreover, the performance of the impeller varied in the pressure distribution, torque, rotational speed and power generated by the different number of blades and angles. The model has been validated, comparing numerical results with available experimental data.

The 1-D numerical study of the interior ballistics has been conducted. The unsteady compressible 1-D CFD code using SIMPLER algorithm and QUICK scheme has been developed. The mathematical model of the two-phase flow has been established for the behavior of the interior ballistics. The moving boundary due to the projectile motion as the physical phenomena of the interior ballistics results in the varied control volume. In order to analyze the moving boundary, the numerical codes, which apply the ghost-cell extrapolation method and the Lagrangian method respectively, have been developed. The ghost-cell extrapolation method has been used in the Eulerian coordinate system. The Lagrangian method has been used in Non-Eulerian coordinate system. These codes have been verified through the analysis of the free piston motion problem in the tube. Through this study, the basic techniques of the numerical code for the multi-dimensional two-phase flow of the interior ballistics have been obtained.
