  • Studies of unsteady-airfoil flows have been motivated mostly by efforts to avoid. or reduce such undesirable effects as flutter, noise and vibrations, dynamic stall. In this paper, we carry out a computational study of viscous flows around a two-dimensional oscillating airfoil to investigate unsteady effects in these important and challenging flows. A fully implicit incompressible RANS solver has been used for calculating unsteady viscous flows around an airfoil. The cell-centered End order finite volume method is utilized to discretize governing equations. in order to ease the flow computation for fluid region changing in time, improve the qualify of solution and simplify the grid generation for an oscillating airfoil flow, the computational method adopts a moving and deforming grid generation technique based on the multi-block grid topology. The numerical method is applied for calculating viscous flows of an oscillating NACA 0012 in uniform flow. The computational results are compared with available experimental data. Computed results are compared with experimental data and flow characteristics of the experiment are reproduced well In the computed results.

  • In this paper, numerical calculations are performed to analyze the unsteady flow of NACA airfoil sections. In order to ease the flow computation for the fluid region changing in time, improve the quality of solution and simplify the grid generation for the oscillating foil flow, the computational method adopts a moving and deforming mesh with the multi-block grid topology. The multi-block, structured-unstructured hybrid grid is generated using the commercial meshing software Gridgen V15. The MDM (Moving & Deforming Mesh) and the UDF (User Define function) function of FLUENT 6 are adopted for computing turbulent flows of the foil in pitching motion. Computed unsteady lift and drag forces are compared with experimental data. in general, the characteristics of unsteady lift and drag of the experiments are reproduced well in the numerical analysis.

  • We solve the integral representation of the Navier-Stokes equations in a lagrangian view by tracking the particles, which have vortex strengths. We simulate the unsteady viscous flow around an impulsively started cylinder using the vortex particle method. Particles are advanced via the Biot-Savart law for a lagrangian evolution of particles. The particle strength is modified based on the scheme of particle strength exchange. The solid boundary satisfies the no-slip boundary condition by the vorticity generation algorithm. We newly modify the diffusion scheme and the boundary condition for simulating an unsteady flow efficiently. To save the computation time, we propose the mixed scheme of particle strength exchange and core expansion. We also use a lot of panels to ignore the curvature of the cylinder, and not to solve the evaluation of the surface density. Results are compared to those from other theoretical and experimental works.

  • The unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by computational methods. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer. and the sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The discrete noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random pitch (type-A and -B) blades are compared by their SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra. and the frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are discussed. Besides. a mathematical model is proposed for the prediction of discrete blade tonal noise and is validated with available experimental data. The fan performance is also compared with experimental data. indicating that the random pitch effect does not significantly alter the performance characteristics at ${\phi}$ 〉 0.4

  • Unsteady flow characteristics and associated blade tonal noise of a cross-flow fan are predicted by a computational method. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are time-accurately solved for obtaining the pressure fluctuations between the rotating blades and the stabilizer, and sound pressure is predicted using Curie's equation. The computed fan performance is favorably compared with experimental data, and also indicates that the performance is not significantly altered by the random pitch effect at ${\phi}>0.4$. In the present study, the narrow-band noise characteristics of three impellers with a uniform and two random Pitch (type-A and-B) blades are compared by the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spectra, and their frequency modulation characteristics of the BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) noise are also discussed.

  • In the present study, a solution algorithm for the computation of unsteady flows on unstructured meshes is presented. Dual time stepping is incorporated to achieve the second-order temporal accuracy while reducing errors associated with linearization and factorization. This allows any time step size, which is suitable for considering physical phenomena of interest. The Gauss-Seidel scheme is used to solve the linear system of equations. A special treatment based on spring analogy is made to handle meshes with high aspect-ratio cells. The present method was validated by comparing the results with experimental data and those obtained from rigid motion.

  • The vortex particle method, which includes viscous effects, consists of diffusion of boundary vorticity and creation of the vortex particles, convection, particle strength exchange, and particle redistribution. Accuracy of the boundary element method is very important since it creates the particles around the body at every time step. A boundary element method based on source panel was investigated as part of computation of unsteady separated flows by rising the vortex particle method. The potential flows were computed around a circular cylinder and a square cylinder. The results around the circular cylinder were compared with the exact solution, and the distribution of vorticity, in particular near the sharp comers of the square cylinder, is scrutinized for different number of panels.

  • This paper presents unsteady computational investigations and wind tunnel tests on the flow field around a square cylinder with a gap between the body and the ground plane. Two-dimensional unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes codes are developed for the computation of the viscous turbulent flows. By computing the flow around a square cylinder without ground effect, three two-equation turbulence models are evaluated and the developed code is validated. The results show a good agreement with experimental values and other computational results. Critical gap height at which the formation of Karman vortex streets is interrupted, is demonstrated and another transition regime is pointed out
