To predict the transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions, a practical steady approach has been proposed. In this study, it is assumed that the airfoil flow is steady even when buffet onset occurs. Steady Navier-Stokes computations are performed on the supercritical airfoil. Using the aerodynamic parameters calculated from Navier-Stokes solver, various steady approaches for predicting buffet onset are discussed. Among the various steady approaches considered in this study, Thomas' criterion based on Navier-Stokes computation has shown to be the most appropriate indicator of identifying the buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions. Good agreements have been obtained compared with the results of unsteady transonic wind tunnel tests. The present method is shown to be reliable and useful for transonic buffet onset for a supercritical airfoil with shock-boundary layer interactions in terms of practical engineering viewpoint.

A numerical study on two-dimensional unsteady transonic cascade flow has been performed by adopting dual time stepping and the k-.omega. turbulence model. An explicit 4 stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an implicit Gauss-Seidel iteration scheme for the k-.omega. turbulence model are proposed for fictitious time stepping. This mixed time stepping scheme ensures the stability of numerical computation and exhibits a good convergence property with less computation time. Typical steady-state convergence accelerating schemes such as local time stepping, residual smoothing and multigrid combined with dual time stepping shows good convergence properties. Numerical results are presented for unsteady laminar flow past a cylinder and turbulent shock buffeting problem for bicircular arc cascade flow is discussed.
The freeplay, one of the concentrated structural nonlinearities, is inevitable for control surfaces of a real air vehicle due to normal wear of components and manufacturing mismatches. Also aerodynamic nonlinearities caused by a shock wave occur in transonic region. In practice, these nonlinearities induce the limit cycle oscillation (LCO) and decrease the transonic flutter speed. In this study, the fictitious mass method is used to apply a modal approach to nonlinear structural models due to freeplay. The transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation is used to calculate unsteady aerodynamic forces in transonic region. Nonlinear aeroelastic time responses are predicted by the coupled time integration method (CTIM). This method was also applied to a 3D all-movable control wing to investigate its nonlinear aeroelastic responses. The angle of attack effect on the LCO characteristics has been found to be closely related with the initial pitching moment.
In this study, a nonlinear aeroelastic analysis system for the fighter wing with tip-store has been developed additionally in the transonic and supersonic flow region. The unsteady CFD code based on the transonic small disturbance theory has been incorporated to consider the numerical capability for the aerodynamic nonlinear effects. The coupled time-integration method is used to observe the detailed nonlinear aeroelastic responses for elastic wings in their flight. condition. A conservative wing-box model of a fighter wing with tip-store is modeled by MSC/PATRAN and the corresponding free vibration analysis has been performed by MSC/NASTRAN. The results of flutter analyses are presented in the subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow regime.
In this study, transonic aeroelastic response analyses haw been conducted for the business jet aircraft configuration considering shockwave and flow separation effects. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to wing-body configurations. In transonic flight region, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic responses have been investigated for a typical wing-body configuration model. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for aircraft design and test engineers.

A two-dimensional airfoil flying over a wavy wall is calculated by solving the unsteady Euler equation. Unsteady Transonic flow over an NACA00012 airfoil in pitching motion has been computed for code validation. Some numerical results for NACA6409 airfoil under different wave number, wave length, fly height are presented. The numerical results show the variation of lift and pitching moment coefficients are increased as wave length decrease.

An advanced aeroelastic analysis using a computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented in this Paper. A general aeroelastic analysis system is originally developed and applied to realistic design problems in the transonic flow region, where strong shock wave interactions exist. The present computational approach is based on the modal-based coupled nonlinear analysis with the matched-point concept and adopts the high-speed parallel processing technique on the low-cost network based PC-clustered machines. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Euler equations using the unstructured grid system have been applied to easily consider complex configurations. It is typically shown that the advanced numerical approach can give very realistic and practical results for design engineers and safe flight tests. One can find that the present study conducts a virtual flutter flight test which are usually very dangerous in reality.
Unsteady compressible Euler equation is solved and the high-order, high-resolution numerical solver, physical boundary condition, adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model and conformal mapping are applied to computation of steady transonic flow and unsteady acoustics. The acoustic characteristics of axi-symmetric duct and two dimensional straight/S channel are studied and the computation results shows good agreements with linear analysis. In transonic case, local time stepping and canceling-the-residual techniques are used for convergence acceleration. The aspect of flow and acoustics in S-channel and the Pattern of noise radiation is changed by inflow Mach no. and static pressure at fan-face.
