The fluctuation of inlet flow to a water treatment plant makes a serious problem that it can change the outlet flowrate from each process abruptly. Since it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes, it is impossible for operators to cope with that stably. In order to investigate the characteristics of hydraulic behavior for rectangular sedimentation basin in water treatment plant, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation were employed. From the results of both CFD simulations, it was confirmed that time taken for the follow-up processes by the fluctuation in intake well can be estimated by the propagation velocity of surface waves. Also, it takes very short time for the surface wave occurred from the fluctuation of inlet flow to reach the latter processes. In the case of inlet flowerate being increased sharply, local velocity within sedimentation basin appeared as wave pattern and increased due to convection current. Also, it could be observed that vortex made local velocity in the vicinity of bottom rise.

Various types of flow conditions are developed in the region just downstream of hydraulic structures such as weir and drop structures. One of distinct flow conditions occurred downstream of drop structures is the wave type flow with undular hydraulic jump formation. We present three-dimensional numerical simulations of a wave type flow formed downstream of a stepped weir which were experimentally investigated by Kang et al. (2010). The turbulent flow over the weir structure is modeling using the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulation employing the Spalart-Allmaras one equation model and the detached eddy simulation. Numerical modeling and the performance of turbulence modeling approaches are evaluated by comparing with the experimental measurements in terms of the free surface variation, the shapes and sizes of undular wave, roller near at free surface, recirculation zone near the channel bottom downstream of the structures, and streamwise velocity profiles at selected longitudinal locations.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate a defrost model for the possibility of defrosting on wheelhouse window and the heat capacity if defrosting nozzle by using the commercial CFD solver FLUENT. A detailed simulation model has been created which contains the defrosting nozzle, window and the interior/exterior forced convection boundary. In this numerical study, the heat and mass transfer coupled during defrosting and investigated the defrost time for different hot gas temperature, external wind speed and temperature condition.
A numerical method is presented for computing unsteady incompressible two-phase flows with immersed solids. The method is based on a level set technique for capturing the phase interface, which is modified to satisfy a contact angle condition at the solid-fluid interface as well as to achieve mass conservation during the whole calculation procedure. The modified level set method is applied for numerical simulation of bubble deformation in a micro channel with a cylindrical solid block and liquid jet from a micro nozzle.
The instabilities in rocket engines and gas turbine combustors due to the interaction between the fluid flow (acoustics) and the heat transfer (thermal energy) are called thermoacoustic or combustion instabilities. Almost all analysis assumes constant hot section temperature for Modern mathematical analysis of acoustic oscillations in Rijke type devices. However, it is impossible to predict whether a system is stable or not because the flame or heater response model can have a dramatic effect on predicted growth rates. In this study, A standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and hybrid combustion model(eddy breakup model and chemical reaction) were used. After steady solution was gotten, unsteady calculation is simulated by perturbating on pressure boundary. As a result, we obtained the relationship of equivalence ratio and frequency by numerical simulation, and they are comparable to the experimental result. In addition, in spite of these results, there are limitations of using turbulent and combustion model in simulation method of thermoacoutic instability
The multi-environment probability density function model has been applied to simulate a turbulent premixed flame in a swirl combustor. To realistically account for the unsteady flow motion inside the combustor, the formulations are derived for the large eddy simulation. The Flamelet generated manifolds is utilized to simplify a multi-dimensional composition space with reasonable accuracy. The sub grid scale mixing is modeled by the interaction by exchange with the mean mixing model. To validate the present approach, the simulation results are compared with experimental data in terms of mean velocity, temperature, and species mass fractions.

Three-dimensional unsteady simulation using RNG $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is used in full flow passage of model Kaplan turbine. Then the pressure pulsation is obtained. Monitoring data of pressure pulsation in the turbine is obtained through experiment and is compared with the numerical simulation. And a good coherence is shown between the simulation and the experiment. Then the regularity of the pressure pulsation s distribution and transmission in the turbine is discussed in detail.

Assessment of aerodynamic noise is becoming increasingly important for automotive manufacturers. Flow passing a vehicle may indeed lead to high interior noise level and affect cabin comfort. Interior noise results from various mechanisms including aerodynamic fluctuations of the disturbed flow around the side mirror or pillar, hydrodynamic and acoustic loading of the car panels and windows, vibration of these panels and acoustic radiation inside the vehicle. Objective of the present study is to capture these important mechanisms in a simulation model and demonstrate the ability of the combined simulation tools Fluent / Virtual.Lab to provide accurate aerodynamic and interior noise prediction results. Previous study focused on the noise generated by the turbulence around the A-pillar structure of the HSM (Hyundai simplified model). The present study also includes the effect of the side-mirror and rain-gutter structures. Complete modeling process is presented including details on the unsteady CFD simulation and the vibro-acoustic model with absorption materials. Guidelines and best practices for building the simulation model are also discussed.

The engine-out flow is highly transient and hot, and may place tremendous thermal and inertial loads on a closed-coupled catalyst. Therefore, time-dependent and detailed flow and thermal field simulation may be crucial. The aim of this study is to develop combined chemical reaction and multi-dimensional fluid dynamic mathematical model and to study the effect of unsteady pulsating thermal and flow characteristics on thermal reliability of closed-coupled catalyst. The effect of cell density on the conversion performance under real running condition is also investigated. Unlike previous studies, the present study focuses on coupling between the problems of pulsating flow pattern and catalyst thermal response and conversion efficiency. The results are expressed in terms of temporal evolution of flow, pollutant and temperature distribution as well as transient characteristics of conversion efficiency. Fundamental understanding of the flow and thermal phenomena of closed-coupled catalyst under real running condition is presented. It is shown that instants of significantly low values of flow uniformity and conversion efficiency exist during exhaust blowdown and the temporal varaition of flow uniformity is very similar in pattern to one of conversion efficiency. It is also found that the location of hot spot in monolith is directly affected by transient flow pattern in closed-coupled catalyst.
An Euler-Lagrange two-phase flow model is presented fur simulation sheet-flow transport under wave and current. The flow is computed by solving the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation in conjunction with the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model for turbulence closure. The sediment transport is introduced as a motion of granular media under the action of unsteady flow from the Lagragian point of view. In other word, motion of every single particle is numerically traced with Movable Bed Simulator (MBS) code based on the Distinct Element Method (DEM), in which the frequent interparticle collision of the moving particles during the sheet-flow transport is sophisticatedly taken into account. The particle diameter effect on time-dependent developing process of sheet-flow transport is investigated, by using three different diameter sizes of sediment. The influence of an imposed current on oscillatory sheet-flow transport is also investigated. It is concluded that the sediment transport rate increases due to the relaxation process related to the time-lag between flow velocity and sediment motion.
