As computer capacity has been progressed continuously, the studies of the flow characteristics have been performing by the numerical methods actively. Recent numerical simulation has a tendency to require the higher-order accuracy in time, as well as in space. This tendency is more true in LES and acoustic noise simulation. In this study, 3-dimensional unsteady Incompressible Navier-Stokes equation was solved by numerical method using the fractional step method with the fourth order compact pade scheme to achieve high accuracy To validate the present code and algorithm, 3D flow-field around a cylinder was simulated. The drag coefficient and lift coefficient were computed and, then, compared with experiment. The present code will be tailored to LES simulation for more accurate turbulent flow analysis.

The swirling flow in the draft tube of a Francis turbine can cause the flow instability and the cavitation surge and has a larger influence on hydraulic power operating system. In this paper, the cavitating flow with swirling flow in the diffuser was studied by the draft tube component experiment, the model Francis turbine experiment and the numerical simulation. In the component experiment, several types of fluctuations were observed, including the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour by the swirling flow. While the cavitation surge and the vortex rope behaviour were suppressed by the aeration into the diffuser, the loss coefficient in the diffuser increased by the aeration. In the model turbine test the aeration decreased the efficiency of the model turbine by several percent. In the numerical simulation, the cavitating flow was studied using Scale-Adaptive Simulation (SAS) with particular emphasis on understanding the unsteady characteristics of the vortex rope structure. The generation and evolution of the vortex rope structures have been investigated throughout the diffuser using the iso-surface of vapor volume fraction. The pressure fluctuation in the diffuser by numerical simulation confirmed the cavitation surge observed in the experiment. Finally, this pressure fluctuation of the cavitation surge was examined and interpreted by CFD.

The effects of rotation on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder is numerically investigated in the present study. We obtained the numerical solutions for unsteady two-dimensional governing equation for the flow using two different numerical schemes. One is an accurate spectral method and another is finite volume method. Above all, the flow around a stationary circular cylinder is investigated to understand the basic phenomenon of flow separation, bluff body wake. Also, the validation of our own codes, expecially based on FVM, is carried out by the comparison of results obtained from our simulations using two different schemes and previous numerical and experimental studies. By the effect of rotation, the mean lift increases and drag deceases, which well represent the previous study.
The aim of the present study is to investigate the flow interference between two adjacent undulating fish-like body, and its effect on the undulating propulsion. For this purpose, unsteady two dimensional incompressible flow calculations were conducted using an unstructured mesh flow solver, coupled with an overset mesh technique. To deal with mesh deformation due to fish locomotion, spring analogy is utilized. The fish body used in the simulation is constructed from the NACA0012 airfoil. The study indicates that the propulsion of undulating fish is proportional to frequency and wavelength of the midline oscillation when there is no adjacent fish. It also reveals that average thrust was increased when the vortex shedding from the tail was conserved well and pressure difference between upper and lower sides of the fish was magnified due to flow interference. From this study, which relative position and phase difference of locomotion between two fishes can generate maximum thrust was known among six different cases.

This study describes a development of GIS-based program called Debris Flow Analyzer for simulating the hazard extent of debris flow on the assumption that is uniform continuous, incompressible, unsteady. The Debris Flow Analyzer was designed to process debris flow numerical simulation with Finite Difference Formulation; smoothed DEM, slope, debris flow directions, extract valley, debris volume, water volume, debris flow moving speed, effective viscosity, dynamic friction coefficient. Also, it is expected that we can be improved the inform of debris flow hazard map by Google Earth.

This paper describes how to apply one-dimensional simulation to predict unsteady state characteristics of the cold-gas pintle thruster. Mass flow rate, chamber pressure, and nozzle exit pressure are key parameters for thrust control. Chamber pressure rose and fell monotonously with the pintle stroke variation, while thrust variation was different from chamber pressure variation. During the forward pintle stroke operation, the thrust value tended to decrease initially and returned to increase when pintle speed and chamber free volume exceed some specified value. Even though one-dimensional simulation has the limitations to predict unsteady state characteristics, it is still useful for initial performance assessment of various thrusters which adopt an altitude compensation nozzle such as a dual-bell nozzle, prior to experiment or numerical analysis.
In this study, it was examined that a methodology for evaluating the design flood level reasonably at Imjin River estuary affected by the tide periodically. First of all, the change of the flood level was observed by performing unsteady simulation which can take into account the characteristics of the tidal rivers. And the variations of the flood level was analyzed by change of the Manning's roughness coefficient which is sensitive to the water level calculation. The results were compared with the design flood level at Imjin River estuary announced in the 2011 Imjin River Basic Plan Report. For reference, the design flood level reported in 2011 has been calculated by using a section of a huge riverbed dredging section as input data. From the simulation results, it was found that the flood level evaluated by this study was able to satisfy the freeboard of the levee without the riverbed dredging when the roughness coefficient was assigned to the same value as that of the Han river estuary in the calculation of the flood level, and the unsteady flow simulation was carried out to reflect on the tidal river.

Steady and unsteady numerical simulations are conducted for the comparison with the experiments performed to investigate the ram accelerator flow field by using an expansion tube facility in Stanford University. Wavier-Stokes equations for chemically reacting flows are analyzed by fully implicit and time accurate numerical methods with Jachimowski's detailed chemistry model for hydrogen-air combustion involving 9 species and 19 reaction steps. Although the steady state numerical simulation shows a good agreement with the experimental schlieren and OH PLIF images for the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$17N_2$ fails in reproducing the combustion region behind the shock intersection point shown in the case of $2H_2$+$O_2$+$12N_2$ mixture. Therefore, an unsteady numerical simulation is conducted for this case and the result shows all the detailed flow stabilization process. From the result of unsteady numerical simulation, the experimental result seems to be an instantaneous state during the flow stabilization process. The combustion behind the shock intersection point is the result of a normal detonation formed by the intersection of strong oblique shocks that exist at early stage of the stabilization process. At final stage, the combustion region behind the shock intersection point disappears and the steady state result is retained. The time required for stabilization of the reacting flow in the model ram accelerator is found to be very long in comparison with the experimental test time.
Direct numerical simulation results of aeolian tones generated by a two-dimensional obstacle (circular cylinder, square cylinder, NACA0012 airfoil) in a uniform flow are presented and the generation and propagation mechanisms of the sound are discussed. The unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a highly-accurate finite difference scheme over the entire region from near to far fields. The direct numerical simulation results are also compared with the results obtained by Curle's acoustic analogy.
A two-dimensional backward facing step flow is simulated by using URANS and Detached Eddy Simulations(DES) approaches. Turbulence models adopted for URANS and DES simulations are Spalart-Allmaras(S-A) model and Shear Stress Transport(SST) model. The target flow with ER=1.125, $Re_H=37,500$ is experimentally studied by Driver & Seegmiller. Various versions of DES have been tested in this paper. Results of the simulations are compared with the experimental data available to evaluate the merits and demerits of URANS and several versions of DES. URANS simulation converges to a steady state and hence unsteady characteristics are not featured. DES simulations in general successfully mimic large scale structures and oscillation characteristics of the flow.
