  • The two characteristics of two-lane-and-two-way traffic flow are platoon and overtaking triggered by low-speed vehicle. It is crucial to develop a robust model which simultaneously generates the behaviors of platoon by low-speed vehicle and overtaking using opposite lane. Hence, a microscopic two-lane and two-way vehicle model was introduced (B. Yoon, 2011), which is based on CA (Cellular Automata) which is one of discrete time-space models, in Korea. While the model very reasonably explains the behaviour of overtaking low-speed vehicle in stable traffic flow below critical density, it has shortcomings to the overtaking process in unstable traffic flow above the critical density. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develope a vehicle model to more realistically explain overtaking process in unstable traffic flow state based on the model developed in the previous study. The experimental results revealed that the car-following model robustly generates the various macroscopic relationships of traffic flow generating stop-and-go traffic flow and the overtaking model reasonably explains the behaviors of overtaking under the conditions of both opposite traffic flow and stochastic parameter to consider overtaking in unstable traffic flow state. The vehicle model presented in this study can be expected to be utilized for the analysis of two-lane-and-two-way traffic flows more realistically than before.

  • A numerical analysis is performed using two dimensional axisymmetric RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations system on the transition sequence of the Integrated Rocket Ramjet and the unsteady reacting flow-field in a ramjet combustor during unstable combustion. The mode transition of an axisymmetric ramjet is numerically simulated starting from the initial condition of the boost end phase of the entire ramjet. The unsteady reacting flow-field within combustor is computed for varying injection area. In calculation results of the transition, the terminal normal shock is occurred at the downstream of diffuser throat section and no notable combustor pressure oscillation is observed after certain time of the inlet port cover open. For the case of a small injection area at the same equivalence ratio, periodic pressure oscillation in the combustor leads to the terminal shock expulsion from the inlet and hence the buzz instability occurred.

  • In this study we present the numerical methods that can be used in visualization of the flow and mixing patterns in a cavity driven by a top lid. The basic flow field within the cavity has been obtained by using a simple numerical scheme. The invariant manifold also called unstable manifold was then attained to represent the mixing pattern within the cavity. It was shown that care must be taken in calculating the trajectories of the fluid particles especially near corners of the cavity. The numerical results show excellent agreement with those obtained experimentally by other research group.

  • This paper describes an extension or a pair or multiple load flow solutions and nose curve method developed for voltage stability analysis or AC power systems to AC/DC systems. In this approach the converters are regarded as voltage dependent loads. Assuming that the converters at the unstable (-mode) solution consume the same power equal to the power at the stable (+mode) solution, the unstable solutions or the nose curves arc determined. This method is very efficient since estimating voltage collapse point and voltage stability margin arc determined by a few iterations of multiple load flow solutions. Also the method has the advantages that since the structure or Jacobian matrix is same with that of AC load flow, modal analysis or voltage stability is readily applicable if desired.

  • Recently in order to describe the complex rheological behavior of polymer melts with long side branches like low density polyethylene, new constitutive equations called the pom-pom equations have been derived by McLeish and Larson on the basis of the reptation dynamics with simplified branch structure taken into account. In this study mathematical stability analysis under short and high frequency wave disturbances has been performed for the simplified differential version of these constitutive equations. It is proved that they are globally Hadamard stable except for the case of maximum constant backbone stretch (λ = q) with arm withdrawal s$\_$c/ neglected, as long as the orientation tensor remains positive definite or the smooth strain history in the now is previously given. However this model is dissipative unstable, since the steady shear How curves exhibit non-monotonic dependence on shear rate. This type of instability corresponds to the nonlinear instability in simple shear flow under finite amplitude disturbances. Additionally in the flow regime of creep shear flow where the applied constant shear stress exceeds the maximum achievable value in the steady now curves, the constitutive equations will possibly violate the positive definiteness of the orientation tensor and thus become Hadamard unstable.

  • The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.

  • The natural circulation system has been widely studied for use in various applications because of its inherent advantage. However, it has a key weakness called flow instability that makes the system unstable. Through massive previous research, the mechanisms of flow instability were analyzed, but there was an ambiguous aspect related to the effect of experimental parameters on the phenomenon. Particularly, there has been no report on the heat transfer performance of the system when flow instability phenomena were present. In this study, thermal-hydraulic phenomena of a two-phase natural circulation system that functions as a passive containment cooling system (PCCS) was investigated according to experimental parameters, namely, the temperature boundary (120-158 ℃) and exit loss coefficient (0-34.5) under atmospheric pressure conditions. The experimental results showed five different flow types in the loop. The flow modes that occurred by the interaction between flashing and boiling were classified by referring to the mass flow rate, void fraction, and visualization data. The system was more unstable when the temperature boundary conditions increased, but it was more stable when the exit loss coefficient increased. These results have only been confirmed in our research. The reason for the results is that the flow conditions are located on the boundary between Density Wave Oscillation I and the stable flow region, and that boundary does not have clear criteria. In addition, comparing the heat transfer performance of a system by heat rate can confirm the effect of flow instability on the thermal performance of the passive cooling system. As a result, the high exit loss coefficient stabilizes the system better than the low case and has similar heat removal performance.

  • This paper investigates the linear stability of wakes with special emphasis on the effect of chemical reaction. Velocity and density profiles for laminar flows are obtained from analytic profiles as well as from simulation. Wakes have two generalized inflection points and two unstable modes-sinuous and varicose modes. For analytical laminar profiles, sinuous modes are more unstable than varicose modes irrespective of density variation, which shows wakes will be destabilized by sinuous modes. Large velocity difference and density difference lead to more unstable wakes due to large momentum difference. For simulated laminar profiles, chemical reaction with stoichiometric chemistry increases temperature and stabilizes the flow due to increase in compressible reacting wades, flow becomes stable as velocity increases due to viscous dissipation.

  • Atomized liquid jets from the washing nozzle which configured with recirculation chamber for cleaning hot-zone area are accelerated and impinged on the head lamp surface. Cleaning efficiency of head lamp can be increased with injecting washing fluids into the hot-zone area. Experimental and numerical studies with various design parameters were executed to reveal the relations between internal geometry and internal flow in the washing nozzle. Spray structures were fitted with each of the head lamp surfaces and spray nozzles were optimized to the spray pattern. The recirculation chamber induces a recirculation flow and can be decreased the pressures perturbation inside the chamber. Orifice determines the mass flow rate. When the diameter of orifice is excessively large, it showed an unstable spray pattern. As a nozzle exit angle increases, density distributions are separated with two section. Also, as a protrusion length of nozzle exit increases, spray patterns are spread into a large area and density distributions showed unstable trend.

  • Lean premixed combustion has been considered as one of the promising solutions for the reduction of NOx emissions from gas turbines. However, unstable combustion of lean premixed flow becomes a real challenge on the way to design a reliable, highly efficient dry low NOx gas turbine combustor. Contrary to a conventional diffusion type combustion system, characteristics of premixed combustion significantly depend on a premixing degree of combusting flow. Combustion behavior in terms of stability has been studied in a model gas turbine combustor burning natural gas and air. Incompleteness of premixing is identified as significant perturbation source for inducing unstable combustion. Application of a simple convection time lag theory can only predict instability modes but cannot determine whether instability occurs or not. Low frequency perturbations are observed at the onset of instability and believed to initiate the coupling between heat release rate and pressure fluctuations.
