  • In order to investigate the behavior of fatigue crack growth of SiC-particulate- reinforced Al-Si alloy composites, fatigue tests using single edge notched tension(SENT) specimens were performed. Composite materials were manufactured by using both permanent die casting and extrusion processes with different volume fractions of $10\%\;and\;20\%$. $SiC_p-reinfurced$ Al-Si composites showed the increased levels of threshold stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, for the increased volume fractions of SiC particles, which implies the increased fatigue crack growth resistance at the threshold or low ${\Delta}K$ levels, compared to the unreinforced Al-Si alloy. In the Paris region, however, the composites showed the increased rate of crack growth resulting in the unfavorable effects on the fatigue crack growth resistance. Critical stress intensity factor range at unstable crack growth leading to final fracture decreased as the volume fraction of SiC particle increased, because of the reduced fracture toughness of the composites. Extruded materials showed higher threshold and critical values than the cast materials.

  • Applicability of $T_{\delta}$ proposed by Shin et al as an instability parameter for ductile material is investigated, Both general fracture test and instability fracture test are performed using compact tension specimens of structural alloy steel(SCM4), The values of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$(applied tearing modules) estimated from the real load vs. crack growth curve measured from experiments are compared with those estimated from the limit load vs. crack growth curve. The results are:(1) the $T_{\delta}$ parameter may be used as a crack instability parameter:(2) the use of ( $T_{\delta}$)$_{app}$ estimated from the load-crack growth curve, proposed in this study is reasonably justified.ified.d.

  • The fracture behavior of plain woven glass/epoxy composite plates with a crack is investigated under static tensile loading. It is shown in this paper that the characteristic length associated with the point stress criterion depends on the crack length. To predict the not ched tensile strength, the point stress criterion proposed by Whitney and Nuismer are modified. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the analytical prediction of the modified point stress criterion. The condition of unstable crack growth in the presence of a per-existing flaw(machined notch) is examined by means of the maximum stress intensity factor $K_max$ using maximumload P$_max$. The values of $K_max$ evaluated from energy release rate G$_max$(the compliance me thod) indicate a wide difference. Therefore in regard to anisotropy and heterogeneity of the composite materials studied, the modified shape correction factor f(a/W) is obtained. $K_max$evaluated by the compliance method a little or insignificantly depends on the initial crack length a, the specimen thickness B, the crack angle .theta. and the specimen geometry.

  • A J$_{IC}$ test procedure by ultrasonic method performed to observe the crack opening behavior of fatigue precrack and detect the initiation of crack propagation of compact tension specimen in this paper. Pulse-echo method with 5 MHz transducer was used on the Cr-Mo steel quenched and tempered at 593.deg. C. We obtained the following results in the elastic-plastic fracture toughness test by ultrasonic method. Echo height is a little increased linearly and rapidly at the early stage of loading . Then it is decreased considerably, finally at the unstable crack growth stage, it is rapidly increased at an unpredictable rae. The initiation of crack propagation is supposed to be at the stage deviated from linearly decreased region and then blunted. J$_{IC}$ value(10.15-12.15 Kgf/mm) by ultrasonic method is lower than that(12.2 Kgf/mm) by R-curve method. But, it is required that the research for the more exact evaluation about correlation between echo height and the crack opening behavior of precrack tip will be continued. continued.ued.

  • We propose the crack growth rate equation which applied over three regions (threshold region, stable region, unstable region) of fatigue crack propagation. Constant stress amplitude fatigue tests are conducted for four materials under three stress ratios of R=0.05, R=0.2 and R=0.4. Materials which have different mechanical properties i.e. stainless steel, low carbon steel, medium carbon steel and aluminum alloy are used. The fatigue crack growth rate equation is given by $da/dN={\beta} (1-R)^{\delta}\({\DELTA}K-{\DELTA}K_t)^{\alpha} / (K_{cf}-K_{max})$${\alpha}, {\beta}$ , and ${\delta}$ are constants, and ${\Delta}K_t$ is stress intensity factor range at low ${\Delta}K$ region. The constants are obtained from nonlinear least square method. $K_{ef}$is critical fatigue stress intensity factor. The relation between half crack length and number of cycles obtained by integrating the crack growth rate equation is in agreement with the experimental data. It is also experimented with constant maximum stress and decreasing stress ratios, and the fatigue growth rate of each material is in accord with the proposed equation.

  • Recently, there have been the increase of ship size and the development of oil and gas in arctic region. These trends have led to the requirements such as high strength, good toughness at low temperature and good weldability for prevent of brittle fracture at service temperature. There has been the key issue of crack arrestability in large size structure such as container ship. In this report for the first time, crack arrest toughness of thick steel plate welds was evaluated by large scale ESSO test for estimate of brittle crack arrestability in thick steel plate. For large structures using thick steel plates, fracture toughness of welded joint is an important factor to obtain structural integrity. In general, there are two kinds of design concepts based on fracture toughness: crack initiation and crack arrest. So far, when steel structures such as buildings, bridges and ships were manufactured using thick steel plates (max. 80~100mm in thickness), they had to be designed in order to avoid crack initiation, especially in welded joint. However, crack arrest design has been considered as a second line of defense and applied to limited industries like pipelines and nuclear power plants. Although welded joint is the weakest part to brittle fracture, there are few results to investigate crack arrest toughness of welded joint. In this study, brittle crack arrest designs were developed for hatch side coaming of large container ships using arrest weld, hole, and insert technology.

  • There are some problems when weld gray cast iron which is used well in automobile industry with auto MIG welding. the problems are followed like this 1) Occurrence of porosity and hardening organization. 2) Occurrence of crack due to lower elongation of gray cast iron when restraint stress works on. 3) Occurrence of porosity and unstable bead shape due to unstable arc under low current MIG welding.. especially there is a restraint on chemical composition of weld metal because the weldment demands more than 570Hv hardness. so it is hard to use Fe-Ni wire to prevent cracks occured on weldment and new welding method is needed to resolve that problems. This study shows how to prevent porosity and cracks occurring when weld gray cast iron trimming die and shows a new welding method for press die of gray cast iron

  • In order to observe the internal damage of concrete in real time, we introduced acoustic emission nondestructive detecting technology into a series of fracture tests; the test results revealed the whole process that concrete undergoes when it sustains damage that leads to failure, according to the change rules of the acoustic emission parameters. The results showed that both the initiation and unstable loads can be accurately determined using the abrupt change of the acoustic emission rate curves and the turning point of the acoustic emission parameters' accumulative curves. The whole process, from damage to failure, includes five phases, beginning with damage, such as cracking, a stable crack growth process, a critical unstable stage, and unstable propagation. The brittle fracture characteristics of concrete change when steel bars are joined, because the steel bars and the concrete structure bond, which causes an increase in the acoustic emission signals within the fracture process of the reinforced concrete. The unstable propagation stage is also extended. Our research results provide a valid methodology and technical explanations, which can help researchers to monitor the cracking process of concrete structures, in real time, during actual projects.

  • In this study, the J-Resistance Curve and material tearing modulus of SA508-C3 steel, which is one of the used nuclear pressure vessel steel, are measured ar room temperature, $200^{circ}C$ and $300^{circ}C$ according to load ratio analysis and ASTM E813, ASTM E1152, respectively. It is observed that J-R curve and Tmat value decrease as the temperature level increase. Applicability of $T_j$ proposed by Paris et al as instability parameter for ductile material is investigated. It is concluded that results are the $T_j$ parameter may be used as a crack instability parameter.

  • This paper describes a probabilistic fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. In the analysis of CANDU pressure tube, it is necessary to perform the PFM analyses based on statistical consideration of flaw generation time. A depth and an aspect ratio of initial semi-elliptical surface crack, a fracture toughness value, delayed hydride cracking (DHC) velocity, and flaw generation time are assumed to be probabilistic variables. In all the analyses, degradation of fracture toughness due to neutron irradiation is considered. Also, the failure criteria considered are plastic collapse, unstable fracture and crack penetration. For the crack growth by DHC, the failure probability was evaluated in due consideration of flaw generation time.
