  • Impact toughness and fracture behavior were studied in five kinds of non-heat treating steels containing bainite; standard(0.25C-1.5Mn-0.5Cr-0.2Mo-0.15V), high V(0.3V), Ni(0.5Mn-2Ni), W(0.4W instead of Mo), and high C-Ni(0.35C-0.5Mn-2Ni) steels. The good hardness and impact toughness balance was exhibited in the $1100^{\circ}C$-rolled condition, while the impact toughness was deteriorated due to coarse grained microstructure in the $1200^{\circ}C$-rolled condition. The impact toughness decreased with increasing the hardness in all steels studied. The fracture behavior was also basically identical, that is, the fracture area was divided into 3 zones; shear and fibrous zone, fracture transition zone with ductile dimples and cleavage cracks, where the cracks initiate and grow to critical size, unstable cleavage fracture propagation zone. The energy absorbed for the critical crack formation through the plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in front of the notch root contributed to a mostly significant portion of the total impact energy.

  • 1. There was significant relationship between personality traits and coping behavior. (1) Type A Group used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than Type B Group (2) Non-sociable group used more emotion-focused coping style especially 'escape-avoidance' behavior than sociable group (3) Emotionally unstable group used more emotion-focused coping style especially 'distancing' and 'escape-avoidance behavior than stable group. 2. There was no significant relationship between personality traits and stress coping effect except emotional stability. 3. There was same inter-correlations among personality, coping style, and coping effect, (1) Type A was significantly correlated with sociability but not with emotional stability. (2) Problem-focused coping style was positively correlated with emotion-focused coping style. (3) Coping effect was not significantly correlated with coping style and personality traits accept emotional stability. 4. There was significant relationship between cognitive appraisal and coping style. (1) When they appraised the event 'could change or did something about it,' that used more problem-focused coping style than appraised 'had to accept.' (2) When they appraised the event ' could control before it occures.' they used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than appraised it 'could not control'. (3) When they appraised the event 'had to gold back.' they used more problem-focused and emotion-focused coping style than appraised it 'had not to hold back.' (4) When they appraised the event 'happened by me.' they used more problem-focused coping style than appraised it 'happened by others.' (5) When they appraised the event 'needed to know more, 'they did not significantly use more coping behavior than appraised it 'needed not to know more.' 5. There was no significant difference except two cases in cognitive appraisal to the problem according to the personality. The two cases were as follows: (1) Sociability group appraised the event 'had to accept.' while non-sociability group appraised it 'could change or did some thing about.' (2) Emotionally stable group appraised the event 'happened by others.' while emotionally unstable group appraised it "happened by me".

  • The turbulent fluctuations of temperature and two components of velocity have been measured with hot- and cold-wires in the Thermally Stratified Wind Tunnel(TSWT). Using the fin-tube heat exchanger type heaters and the neural network control algorithm, both stable ($dT/dz=109.4^{\circ}C$) and unstable ($dT/dz=-49.1^{\circ}C$) stratifications were realized. An ambient air jet was issued normally into the cross flow($U_{\infty}=1.0 m/s$) from a round nozzle(d = 6 mm) flushed at the bottom waII of the wind tunnel with the velocity ratio of $5.8(U_{jet}/U_{\infty})$. The characteristics of turbulent dispersion in the cross flow jet are found to change drastically depending on the thermal stratification. Especially, in the unstable condition, the vertical velocity fluctuation increases very rapidly at downstream of jet. The fluctuation velocity spectra and velocity-temperature cospectra along the jet centerline were obtained and compared. In the case of stable stratification, the heat flux cospectra changes Its sign from a certain point at the far field because of the restratification phenomenon. It is inferred that the main reason in the difference between the vertical heat fluxes is caused by the different length scales of the large eddy motions. The turbulent kinetic energy and scalar dissipation rates were estimated using partially non-isotropic and isotropic turbulent approximation. In the unstable case, the turbulent energy dissipation decreases more rapidly with the downstream distance than in the stable case.

  • The purpose of this study is to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in the ultra large containership during service life. In order to do it, the behavior of the embedded crack at the weldment under design loading conditions was evaluated in accordance with BS7910. Here, the level of primary stress induced by ship motion was evaluated by the design code of classification society and FEA. The level of residual stress as secondary stress was calculated in consideration of the restraint degree of weldment and welding heat input by using the predictive equation proposed by authors in the previous study. The fatigue crack growth rate at the weldment was evaluated using CT specimen in accordance with ASTM E647. According to the results, although the allowable defect for embedded crack specified in the classification society exists at the weldment, the occurrence possibility of unstable fracture at the weldment could not be negligible, regardless of CTOD value given in this study. So, in this study, the effect of initial defect size, welding heat input, restraint degree and CTOD on the fracture mechanical characteristics of embedded crack at the weldment was evaluated by the comprehensive fracture assessment. Based on the results, the design criteria including allowable defect, residual stress level and CTOD value was established to prevent the unstable fracture at the FCA butt weldment of hatch coaming deck in an ultra large containership during service life of 20years.

  • Behavior of rock mass depend on the mechanical properties of intact rock and geometrical property of discontinuity distributed in rock mass. In case of rock slope, particularly, location of slope failure surface and behavior after failure are changed due to discontinuities. In this study, two 3D slope stability analysis methods were developed for two different failure types which are circular failure and planar failure, considering that failure type of rock slope is dependent on scale of discontinuity which was then applied to real rock slope to review the applicability. In case of circular failure, stable condition was maintained in natural dry condition, which however became unstable when the moisture content of the surface was increased by rainfall. In case of planar failure, rock slope become more unstable comparing to dry condition which is attributable to decrease in friction angle of discontinuity surface due to rainfall. Viewing analysis result above, analysis method proved to have well incorporated the phenomenon occurred on real slope from the analysis result, demonstrating its applicability to reviewing the slope stability as well as to maintaining the slope.

  • In this study, the combustion instability characteristics of low-swirl injector and high-swirl injector is compared by model gas turbine combustor. To compare of unstable behavior in high-swirl injector and low-swirl injector, we performed lots of measurement of combustion instability, with variable of equivalence ratio, combustor length and injector type. The results shown that longitudinal instability occur dominantly in model gas turbine combustor. In addition, it was found that high-swirl injector has more wide range of unstable regime than low-swirl injector. The blockage ratio what one of a parameter in low-swirl injector has not much effected in aspects of overall combustor behavior. Also, revealed that combustion instability occurred in the same combustor length has same properties, regardless of the injector type.

  • Timber structures are susceptible to moisture, contamination, and pest infestation, which can compromise their integrity and pose a significant fire hazard. Despite these drawbacks, timber's lightweight properties, eco-friendliness, and alignment with current architectural trends emphasizing sustainability make it an attractive option for construction. Moreover, timber structures offer economic benefits and provide a natural aesthetic that regulates building temperature and humidity. In recent years, timber domes have gained popularity due to their high recyclability, lightness, and improved fire resistance. Researchers are exploring hybrid timber and steel domes to enhance stability and rigidity. However, shallow dome structures still face challenges related to structural instability. This study investigates stability problems associated with timber domes, the behavior of timber and steel hybrid domes, and the impact of timber member positioning on dome stability and critical load levels. The paper analyzes unstable buckling in single-layer lattice domes using an incremental analysis method. The critical buckling load of the domes is examined based on the arrangement of timber members in the inclined and horizontal directions. The analysis shows that nodal snapping is observed in the case of a concentrated load, whereas snap-back is also observed in the case of a uniform load. Furthermore, the use of inclined timber and horizontal steel members in the lattice dome design provides adequate stability.

  • The buckling behavior of cylindrical shape-memory alloy and aluminum tube is investigated at room temperature using a split Hopkinson pressure bar and an Instron hydraulic machine with a specially designed recording system. The shape-memory alloy at superelastic property regime buckles gradually in quasi-static loading, and fully recovers upon unloading. However, the buckling of aluminum tube is sudden and catastrophic, and shows permanent deformation. This gradual buckling of shape-memory alloy is associated with the forward and reverse transformation of stress-induced martensite and seems to have a profound effect on the unstable deformation of tube structures made from shape-memory alloy.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of silver coating on the frictional behavior of SM45C steel at sliding surfaces. Pure silver was coated the SM45C disk surfaces by a thermal evaporation method. Experiments using a pin-on-disk test-rig was performed under dry air and various humidity conditions. Friction coefficients increased to a high and unstable value after failure of coating, and friction coefficients increased with increasing the thickness of silver coated layer. But optimum coating thickness was not observed.
