  • A packet loss in wireless environments causes a severe degradation of video quality in video communications. In this paper, a novel video error concealment algorithm is presented by combining boundary errors and a block reliability measure. The block reliability measure decides the reliability of a block by checking residual errors of a block. In the proposed approach, a motion vector of a missing unreliable block in an inter coded frame is obtained initially based on the motion vector of the same block in the reference frame. Furthermore, if the block in the reference frame is unreliable according to the reliability measure, a new motion vector is decided based on block boundary errors around the initial motion vector. According to our simulations, the proposed approach shows promising results for error concealment in error-prone wireless environments.

  • Intraspinal alcohol or phenol administration has been used for the treatment of intractable pain due to terminal cancer. It has been alleged to produce good pain relief with minimal complication if performed carefully. We analysed 35 patients who received epidural or subarachnoid neurolytic block out of 83 patients with malignancy who were referrecl to our pain clinic. Most of the patients needed additional treatment modalities including epidural catheterization or systemic narcotic administration. The incidence of complication was high, especially when the neurolytic agents were administered in the lumbar region. This suggest that intraspinal neurolytic block is unreliable and unsafe, although it may temporarily reduce the analgesic requirement.

  • In this paper, we propose a new motion vector smoothing scheme which has high reliability and coding efficiency of motion vectors. In motion vector filed, groupings are made using angle and magnitude of the motion vectors. In each group, the unreliable motion vectors are corrected by the motion vector smoothing. In 3$\times$3 window, motion vector of the current block is made to group, and the motion vector smoothing is performed only in that group. Result of computer simulation shows much improvement of the reliability of motion vectors. Moreover, coding bits of the motion vector are diminished from 0.967 to 6.773 bits per block.

  • Error control and concealment in video communication is becoming increasingly important because transmission errors can cause single or multiple loss of macroblocks in video delivery over unreliable channels such as wireless networks and the internet. This paper describes a temporal error concealment by postprocessing. Lost image blocks are overlapped block motion compensated (OBMC) using median of motion vectors from adjacent blocks at the decoder. The results show a significant improvement over zero motion error concealment and other temporal concealment methods such as Motion Vector Rational Interpolation or Side Match Criterion OBMC by 1.4 to 3.5㏈ gain in PSNR. We present experimental results showing improvements in PSNR and computational complexity.

  • MASF is a kind of temporal filter proposed for noise reduction and temporal band limitation. MASF uses motion vectors to extract temporal information in spatial domain. Therefore, inaccurate motion information causes some distortions in MASF operation. Currently, bilinear interpolation after MBA(Block Matching Algorithm) is used for the motion estimation sheme of MASF. But, this method results in unreliable estimation when the object in image sequence has larger movement than the maximum displacement assumed in BMA or the input images are severely corrupted with noise. In order to solve this problem, we propose a hierarchical motion estimation algorithm for MASF. Experimental results show that the proposed method produces reliable output under large motion and noisy situations.

  • In this paper, an adaptive motion vector smoothing scheme based on weighted vector median filtering is proposed in order to eliminate the motion outliers more effectively for improving the quality of side information in frame-based distributed video coding. We use a simple motion vector outlier reliability measure for each block in a motion compensated interpolated frame and apply weighted vector median filtering only to the blocks with unreliable motion vectors. Simulation results show that the proposed adaptive motion vector smoothing algorithm improves the quality of the side information significantly while maintaining low complexity at the encoder in frame-based distributed video coding.

  • In this paper, based on the soft cancellation (SCAN) bit-flipping (SCAN-BF) algorithm, a generalized SCAN bit-flipping (GSCAN-BF-Ω) decoding algorithm is carried out, where Ω represents the number of bits flipped or corrected at the same time. GSCAN-BF-Ω algorithm corrects the prior information of the code bits and flips the prior information of the unreliable information bits simultaneously to improve the block error rate (BLER) performance. Then, a joint threshold scheme for the GSCAN-BF-2 decoding algorithm is proposed to reduce the average decoding complexity by considering both the bit channel quality and the reliability of the coded bits. Simulation results show that the GSCAN-BF-Ω decoding algorithm reduces the average decoding latency while getting performance gains compared to the common multiple SCAN bit-flipping decoding algorithm. And the GSCAN-BF-2 decoding algorithm with the joint threshold reduces the average decoding latency further by approximately 50% with only a slight performance loss compared to the GSCAN-BF-2 decoding algorithm.

  • Recently, most of the video services are usually transmitted in wireless networks. In networks environment, a packet of video is likely to be lost during transmission. For this reason, this paper proposes a new Error Concealment (EC) algorithm. For High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) bitstreams, the proposed algorithm includes Adaptive Prediction Unit-based Motion Vector Extrapolation (APMVE) and Boundary Matching (BM) algorithm, which employs both the temporal and spatial correlation. APMVE adaptively decides a Error Concealment Basic Unit (ECBU) by using the PU information of the previous frame and BM employing the spatial correlation is applied to only unreliable blocks. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides the higher subjective quality by reducing blocking artifacts which appear in other existing algorithms.

  • In the wireless communication systems, transmission errors degrade the reconstructed image quality severely. Error concealment in video communication is becoming increasingly important because transmission errors can cause single or multiple loss of macroblocks in video delivery over unreliable channels such as wireless networks and internet. Among various techniques which can reduce the degradation of video quality, the error concealment techniques yield good performance without overheads and the modification of the encoder. In this paper, lost image blocks can be concealed with the OBMC(Overlapped Block Motion Compensation) after new motion vectors of the lost image blocks are allocated by median values using the adaptive selection with motion vectors of adjacent blocks. We know our algorithm is more effective in case of continuous GOB loss. The results show a significant improvement over the zero motion error concealment and other temporal concealment methods such as Motion Vector Rational Interpolation or Median+OBMC by 3dB gain in PSNR.

  • The major factors which affect the crankshaft axial vibration are such items as the axial stiffness and mass of crankshaft, the thrust block stiffness, the propeller's entrained water and the exciting and damping forces of engine, propeller and shafting. Among above mentioned items, the axial stiffness and mass of crankshaft, thrust block stiffness and propeller's entrained water were treated in detail in part I, and so in this paper, the rest of above items will be studied. The exciting forces of crankshaft axial vibration are generated mainly from the gas explosion pressure of cylinder, the thrust fluctuation of propeller, and sometimes the torsional vibration of crankshaft induces the crankshaft axial vibration. As for the propeller thrust fluctuation, its harmonic components can be fairly exactly calculated from the experimental results of propeller in the towing tank, but as the calculation process is rather tedious and laborious, the empirical values are ordinarily used. On the other hand, the table of harmonic components of gas pressure has been already published by major slow speed diesel engine makers, but the axial thrust conversion factor of radial force is not unknown yet, and as its estimated value is unreliable, the axial vibration force of gas pressure is uncertain. As the calculation of damping force is very complicated and it includes some uncertain factors, the thoretically estimated amplitudes of axial vibration are much more incorrect in comparison with those of torsional vibrations. Authors have paid special attentions to deriving the theoretical calculation formula of axial conversion factor of radial force and damping force of crankshaft axial vibration and developed a computer program to calculate resonance amplitudes and additional stresses of crankshaft axial vibrations. Also, to check the reliability of the developed computer program, the axial vibrations of three ships' propulsion shaftings were analyzed and their results were compared with those of measured values and makers' results.
