  • Eight bacterial strains assigned to the phylum Firmicutes were isolated from the soil samples in Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strains 18JY14-16, 18JY14-35, 18JY42-5, 18JY12-20, 18JY35-8, 18JY76-9, 18JY39-1 and 18JY54-12 were most closely related to Paenibacillus lupini (MH497638; 99.4%), Paenibacillus illinoisensis (MH497643; 99.8%), Paenibacillus tundrae (MH497658; 99.7%), Paenibacillus selenitireducens (MH497639; 99.4%), Paenibacillus eucommiae (MH 497640; 99.9%), Paenibacillus vini (MH497654; 99.4%), Paenibacillus gorillae (MH497647; 99.5%), and Paenibacillus macquariensis (MH497649; 99.9%) respectively. These Paenibacillus species were Gram-stain-positive, rod-shaped and radiation resistant bacteria. This is the first report of these nine bacterial species in Korea.

  • A unrecorded species of Trichocladium, Trichocladium griseum, was isolated in 2017 during a survey of fungal diversity in Ulsan province, South Korea. This species was identified based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA and ${\beta}-tubulin$ gene sequences. T. griseum has not yet been reported in South Korea. Thus, we report for the first time a new record of Trichocladium griseum in Korea, and we include the descriptions and morphological illustrations of this fungus.

  • Four species of ophichthid leptocephali were identified using 12S rDNA sequences, and their morphological descriptions were first provided based on six individuals (S1-S3,M1, and E1-E2) collected from the East Sea and the Korea Strait between September 2008 and October 2010. Mitochondrial 12S rDNA 859-861 base pairs of ophichthid leptocephali were compared with those of 16 ophichthids adult and 2 outgroups (Anguilla japonica and Conger myriaster). Leptocephali of S1 and E1 were very closely clustered with adult of Scolecenchelys borealis (D=0.002) and Echelus uropterus (D=0.000), respectively. However, leptocephali of S2-S3 andM1 were slightly far clustered with leptocephalus of S1 (D=0.006) and adult of Muraenichthys gymnopterus (0.034), respectively. We believe that S1 and E1 are S. borealis and E. uropterus, respectively, in which the former is unrecorded species in Korea. However, S2-S3 and M1 may be undescribed species belonging to genus Scolecenchelys and Muraenichthys, respectively, because total numbers of myomeres for S2-S3 (148-158) and M1 (151) were not consistent with total numbers of vertebrae or distribution for any adult of Scolecenchelys spp. and Muraenichthys spp. in the world. We propose the new Korean name 'Dong-hae-mul-baem' for S. borealis.

  • The majority of parasitological studies of terrestrial snakes in Korea have focused on zoonotic parasites. However, in the present study, we describe 3 unrecorded nematode species recovered from 5 species of snakes (n=6) in Korea. The examined snakes, all confiscated from illegal hunters, were donated by the Chungnam Wild Animal Rescue Center and Korean Broadcasting System in July 2014 and February 2015. Light and scanning electron microscopies on the shapes of spicules that are either bent or straight (kalicephalids) and the presence of the intestinal cecum (ophidascarids) figured out 3 nematodes; Kalicephalus brachycephalus Maplestone, 1931, Kalicephalus sinensis $Hs{\ddot{u}}$, 1934, and Ophidascaris excavata $Hs{\ddot{u}}$ and Hoeppli, 1934. These 3 species of nematode faunas are recorded for the first time in Korea.

  • In a survey of undiscovered taxa in Korea, three zygomycete fungal strains-EML-W31, EML-HGD1-1, and EML-RUS1-1-were isolated from freshwater, grasshopper fecal, and soil samples in Korea. On the basis of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer and 28S rDNA, the isolates of EML-W31, EML-HGD1-1, and EML-RUS1-1 were confirmed to be Cunninghamella bertholletiae, Cunninghamella echinulata, and Cunninghamella elegans, respectively. These species have not been previously described in Korea.

  • In April 2019, a single Peristediidae juvenile (14.1 mm SL) was collected from the waters off of Jeju-do Island, Korea. DNA barcoding identified the juvenile as Peristedion liorhynchus, an unrecorded species in Korea. P. liorhynchus has eight dorsal fin spines, 22 dorsal and 19 anal fin rays, and a long third pectoral fin ray that passes through the middle of the tail at the juvenile stage. Juvenile also have large heads, extensive head spination, and serrated edges on the ocular and parietal spines. This is the first record of P. liorhynchus in Korea; therefore, we propose the new Korean name, "Nam-bang-hwang-seong-dae".

  • The seven unrecorded ciliates were collected from soil samples in Korea. The morphological study of these ciliates was performed based on observation of both living and stained cells: Rigidocortex quadrinucleatus Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2017, Rigidohymena tetracirrata (Gellért, 1942) Berger, 2011, Urosoma salmastra (Dragesco and Dragesco-Kernéis, 1986) Berger, 1999, Urosomoida agilis (Engelmann, 1862) Foissner, 1982, Rigidosticha italiensis Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2016, Eschaneustyla terricola Foissner, 1982 and Pseudokeronopsis similis (Stokes, 1886) Borror and Wicklow, 1983. Among the seven genera in this study, the genus Rigidosticha Bharti, Kumar and La Terza, 2016 is firstly reported in Korea. In this study, we provide brief descriptions and remarks for the ciliates with photographs.
