Bacterial communities inhabiting islands play a vital role in the functioning and formation of a unique, isolated ecosystem. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of systematic research on the indigenous microbiological resources of the islands in Korea. To excavate microbial resources for further studies on the metabolism and biotechnological potential, a standard dilution plating was applied to coastal seawater samples collected from islands along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, including Deokjeokdo, Baengnyeongdo, and Daebudo in 2022. A total of 2,007 bacterial strains were isolated from the samples as single colonies and identified using 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses. A total of 20 strains, with ≥98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to bacterial species having validly published names but not reported in Korea, were designated as unrecorded bacterial species in Korea. The unrecorded bacterial strains were phylogenetically diverse and belonged to four phyla, five classes, 12 orders, 17 families, and 18 genera. The unreported species were assigned to Algimonas, Amylibacter, Notoacmeibacter, Roseibium, and Terasakiella of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Alteromonas, Congregibacter, Marinagarivorans, Marinicella, Oceanospirillum, Psychromonas, Thalassotalea, Umboniibacter, and Vibrio of the class Gammaproteobacteria; Lutibacter and Owenweeksia of the class Flavobacteriia; Paenibacillus of the class Bacilli; and Pelagicoccus of the class Opitutae. The taxonomic characteristics of the unreported species, including morphology, biochemistry, and phylogenetic position are provided in detail.
A total of 37 anaerobic bacteria strains within the classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia, Flavobacteriia, Bacilli, Clostridia, and Fusobacteriia were isolated from freshwater and sediment of the Geum River in Korea. The unreported species were related with Rhizobium and Oleomonas of the class Alphaproteobacteria; Acidovorax, Pseudogulbenkiania, and Aromatoleum of the class Betaproteobacteria; Tolumonas, Aeromonas, Cronobacter, Lonsdalea, and Phytobacter of the class Gammaproteobacteria; Bacteroides, Dysgonomonas, Macellibacteroides, and Parabacteroides of the class Bacteroidia; Flavobacterium of the class Flavobacteriia; Bacillus and Paenibacillus of the class Bacilli; Clostridium, Clostridioides, Paraclostridium, Romboutsia, Sporacetigenium, and Terrisporobacter of the class Clostridia; and Cetobacterium and Ilyobacter of the class Fusobacteriia. A total of 37 strains, with >98.7% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with validly published bacterial species, but not reported in Korea, were determined to be unrecorded anaerobic bacterial species in Korea.
Korean bamboo forests encompass 22,067 hectares and are dominated by Phyllostachys species. These forests serve as vital ecosystems, providing nourishment and habitat for diverse flora, fauna, and microorganisms. Among these inhabitants, various fungal species have been documented worldwide, displaying ecological roles as saprobes, parasites, and symbionts within or outside the bamboo host. However, a comprehensive study of bambusicolous fungi within the Korean bamboo ecosystem remains a critical gap in our knowledge. In this study, we conducted an extensive survey of bamboo materials collected from various bamboo forests and subsequently undertook fungal isolation. Primary identification of bambusicolous fungi was achieved through analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. As a result, we identified seven previously unrecorded bambusicolous fungal species (Fusarium bambusarum, Fusicolla violacea, Macroconia gigas, Neopestalotiopsis camelliae-oleiferae, Neopestalotiopsis iberica, Neopestalotiopsis longiappendiculata, and Thyridium punctulatum). Phylogenetic analysis using protein-coding genes appropriate for each taxon and morphological observation were conducted to ensure accurate identification. This study contributes to our understanding of fungal diversity within bamboo forests in Korea.

Macrofungi are essential decomposers in the forest environment. Although more than 70% of the land is mountainous, there has been a lack of research on mushroom diversity in Korea compared to the global species estimation. For this reason, the need for further research became apparent. The surveys were conducted from 2014 to 2022 nationwide. As a result, 15 unrecorded macrofungal species were discovered: Agaricus thiersii, Baorangia alexandri, Boletellus putuoensis, Entoloma bulakhae, Entoloma pygmaeopapillatum, Entoloma subtenuicystidiatum, Gerronema kuruvense, Hyphoderma nudicephalum, Hyphoderma tenue, Macrolepiota subcitrophylla, Mycena jingyinga, Mycena yuezhuoi, Ophiocordyceps vespulae, Scytinostroma acystidiatum, and Steccherinum straminellum. These species are identified based on morphological, molecular, and phylogenetic analyses using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the nuclear large subunit rRNA (LSU) region. Here, we provided macro- and micro-morphological figures with phylogenetic trees to support 15 species as unrecorded to Korea.
While conducting a floristic study of Korean hepatics, we discovered two unrecorded species, which were collected from wind holes near the Donggang River, Korea. Mannia fragrans (Balb.) Frye & L. Clark and Mannia androgyna (L.) A. Evans are hereby reported for the first time in Korea. M. androgyna is characterized by pale grayish oil bodies in both the aerenchyma and basal tissue, and saccate spores with a conspicuous proximal disc. M. fragrans is characterized by a gynoecial segment with a whitish apical brush of scales, a commonly aromatic smell, and areolate spores with a conspicuous proximal disc. Two unrecorded species are described and illustrated based on Korean material.
We reported an unrecorded species of the genus Allium (Alliaceae) which is growing along riversides in the central part of Korean peninsula. A. longistylum Baker, has been known to distribute only in China. The new common name, 'Gang-bu-chu', was given considering the habitat characteristics such as growing riversides in Korea. In this study, we described morphological characters, and provided illustrations as well as photographs of the habitat.
Lambertella corni-maris Höhn., an endophytic fungus that is an unrecorded species in Korea, was isolated and cultured from alpine coniferous Korean fir. The Lambertella sp. was found in Korean pine in Yeongwol-gun but no Lambertella spp. were recorded elsewhere in Korea. In this study, the morphological characteristics and molecular barcode sequence of L. cornimaris were compared to its related species. We tried to explain the cultural characteristics and microstructures, such as the conidia of L. corni-maris, compared to closely related taxa and present it.
The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil samples collected in Daegu and Cheongju city, Republic of Korea. To identify the wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Among 13 strains, 11 strains were previously reported, but two strains were unreported from the Republic of Korea. The two unrecorded yeast strains, GW1-3 and PG1-1-10C, belong to the genus Solicoccozyma (family Piskurozymaceae, order Filobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes). The two strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research showed the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.
As part of a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in the Republic of Korea, 37 bacterial strains belonging to 36 species were isolated from diverse environmental habitats. These strains were assigned to five phyla, namely Deinococcota, Actinomycetota, Bacillota, Bacteroidota, and Pseudomonadota. Each strain was identified based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.7%) and the formation of definite phylogenetic clades with their closest reported species. Among isolates, there is one species belonging to the phylum Deinococcota, five species belonging to the phylum Actinomycetota, four species belonging to the phylum Bacillota, nine species belonging to the phylum Bacteroidota, and 17 species belonging to the phylum Pseudomonadota (comprising eight species of the class Alphaproteobacteria, one species of the class Betaproteobacteria, and eight species of the class Gammaproteobacteria). Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, each strain was assigned to independent and predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding these 36 species in the Republic of Korea, they have been reported as unrecorded species in the Republic of Korea. Their Gram stain, cell morphology, colony, basic biochemical characteristics, strain ID, and isolation source of each species are described in the species descriptions.
