나문재속 한반도 미기록식물 1종 (One unrecorded species from Korea: Suaeda malacosperma Hara)

  • 한반도 서남해안에서 나문재속에 속하는 한반도 미기록식물 1종을 발견하여 보고한다. 이 종의 형태적 특징과 서식지 등에 대해 기술하였다. 이 종은 국내에 분포하는 나문재속의 다른 종과는 얇고 넓은 잎과 별 모양의 열매 형태에서 뚜렷이 구별된다.

  • 난대림 지역인 전라남도 신안군 흑산면 가거도에서 발견된 미기록 1종 푸른가막살(Viburnum japonicum (Thunb.) Sprengel)을 보고한다. 잎은 상록성으로 털이 없고 광택이 있으며 겨울눈은 나출되어 있어 이미 보고된 가막살나무속(Viburnum)의 다른 종들과 쉽게 구별된다.

  • A research probing for the unrecorded and taxonomically undescribed indigenous species has been initiated since 2006. Samples were collected from an intertidal zone along the coasts of Korea as well as around the Jeju Island. We have found five unrecorded species of four genera belonging to the order Dinophysiales, Gymnodiniales, Peridiniales, and Prorocentrales. The species are as follows, Sinophysis canaliculata (2017) Bispidodinium angelaceum (2015), Cabra armorica (2016), Prorocentrum bimaculatum (2017), and P. tsawwassenense (2017) (note; The numbers in parenthesis refer to the year in which the species was reported as unrecorded indigenous species by National Institute of Biological Resources, NIBR hereafter).

A report of 35 unrecorded bacterial species belonging to the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria in Korea

  • During a comprehensive investigation of indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, 25 and 10 bacterial strains assigned to the classes Alphaproteobacteria and Betaproteobacteria, respectively, were isolated from diverse environmental habitats, including soil, mud, tidal field, sea water, sand, rusted iron, and leaf. Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and the formation of robust phylogenetic clades with type species, each strain was assigned to an independent and predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding these 35 isolates in Korea, they - 25 species of 14 families in the 5 orders of Alphaproteobacteria and 10 species of 3 families in the two orders of Betaproteobacteria - have been reported as unrecorded species in Korea. In addition, Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristic, isolation source, and strain ID of each species are also described in the species description sections.

Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and the formation of robust phylogenetic clades with their closest related reported species, each strain was assigned to an independent and predefined bacterial species. Since there were no published or official reports regarding these 21 isolates in Korea, they - 20 species of four families in two orders of the phylum Bacillota and one species of the phylum Verrucomicrobiota - have been reported as unrecorded species in Korea.   • The phylum Bacteroidetes covers phenotypically diverse groups of Gram negative rods that do not form endospores, and currently includes 6 classes, 6 orders, 33 families and 380 genera. Members of Bacteroidetes can be aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophs, hydrogen utilizing chemolithotrophs, or methylotrophs. They can be isolated from diverse habitats including terrestrial and aquatic environments, environments with extreme physicochemical conditions, and animal and plant hosts. During a series of extensive surveys of prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, bacterial strains belonging to Bacteroidetes were isolated from various sources of aquatic and terrestrial environments. A total of 22 isolates were obtained, which represent 22 unrecorded species in Korea belonging to 14 genera of 6 families. Sixteen species among them were assigned to Flavobacteriaceae, two species were to Sphingobacteriaceae, and single species was to each of the families Bacteroidaceae, Balneolaceae, Chitinophagaceae and Cytophagaceae. At genus level, Chryseobacterium (5 species) and Flavobacterium (5 species) were the most abundant genera, and single species were obtained for the genera Bacteroides, Baloneola, Terrimonas, Dyadobacter, Aquimarina, Arenibacter, Gillisia, Gilvibacter, Salinimicrobium, Winogradskyella, Pedobacter and Sphingobacterium.   • Our study aimed to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea. A total of 29 bacterial species in the phylum Proteobacteria were isolated from freshwater and sediment of rivers and brackish zones in Korea. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (${\geq}98.8%$) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged to an independent and predefined bacterial species. To our knowledge, there is no official report or publication that has previously described these 29 species in Korea. Specifically, we identified 10, 12, and seven species of eight, 12, and seven genera that belong to classes Alphaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, and Gammaproteobacteria, respectively; all are reported as previously unrecorded bacterial species in Korea. The Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and strain IDs for each are also described.

  • Through the 'Discovery of Korean Indigenous Species' project hosted by the National Institute of Biological Resources (NIBR), new or unrecorded species of various protozoans inhabiting the Korean Peninsula have been discovered. Samples were collected from marine, freshwater, and soil habitats in South Korea and all species were identified and reviewed by experts working on the respective taxonomic group. This study includes 17 unrecorded Korean protozoan species discovered through this project, which belong to four phyla: Amoebozoa Lühe, 1913, Cercozoa Cavalier-Smith, 1998, Euglenozoa Cavalier-Smith, 1981, and Ciliophora Doflein, 1901. Among them, three families (Rhogostomidae Dumack et al., 2017, Parauronematidae Small and Lynn, 1985, and Cyclidiidae Ehrenberg, 1838) and three genera (Rhogostoma Belar, 1921, Parauronema Thompson, 1967, and Cyclidium Müller, 1773) were reported for the first time in Korea. Unlike the previous paper of 2017, this study provides a comprehensive taxonomic account of each species (e.g., species name, collection site, synonyms, specimen vouchers, diagnoses, and figures). Additionally, all the species were assigned Korean names.

  • Six taxa of unrecorded Korean species of genus Cosmarium were collected from several freshwater sites of South Korea in 2003. They were 3 species and 3 varieties of Genus Cosmarium. Genus Cosmarium of Korea was reported to totally 273 taxa 125 species, 113 varieties and 35 forms including this study.

  • While preparing a floristic study of Korean hepatics, we discovered four unrecorded species collected from Mt. Geumo, Donggang river, Mt. Deokhang, and Mt. Naebyeon in Korea. Plagiochila shangaica Steph., Porella stephaniana (C. Massal.) S. Hatt., Porella chinensis (Steph.) S. Hatt., Solenostoma horikawanum (Amakawa) V$\acute{a}\check{n}$a, Hentschel & J. Heinrichs are reported for the first time in Korea here.
