  • A survey of fungal diversity in Gyeongsang Province, Korea, revealed two previously unreported Aspergillus isolates, named KMG411 and KMG412. The phylogeny of the isolates was analyzed based on β-tubulin (BenA) and calmodulin (CaM) sequencing. Morphological analyses further identified the KMG411 and KMG412 as A. insuetus and A. nomius, respectively. Here we provide detailed morphological descriptions of the previously unrecorded Aspergillus species.

  • Two unrecorded species, Brachynervus beijingensis and B. confusus are described from South Korea for the first time. A taxonomic study of the South Korean Brachynervus was initiated by Uchida (1955). Until now only one species, B. tsunekii, has been recorded from South Korea. In the study, we provide the diagnoses and photos of two unrecorded species of Brachynervus.

  • In 2022, our investigation focused on exploring the macrofungal diversity in South Korea. Through the examination of morphological characteristics and ITS sequences of the rDNA, we successfully identified four unrecorded species (Laccaria striatula, Leotia atrovirens, Malvipezia emileia, Xerula strigosa). Detailed morphological descriptions, accompanied by photographs and molecular phylogenetic analyses were performed.

  • Indigenous fungi from Mount Sohwangbyeongsan, Odaesan National Park, Pyeongchanggun, Gangwon-do, South Korea, were investigated between 2013 and 2016. Our survey identified a total of 137 macrofungi species. These species were systematically categorized into 2 phyla, 4 classes, 15 orders, 41 families, and 73 genera. We identified collected specimens to the species level based on their morphology and rDNA sequences. Two species-Lentinellus flabelliformis and Tricholoma stans were newly recorded as macromycota in Korea.

  • During a survey of culturable fungi in Korea, 18 unrecorded fungal species were isolated and identified from the indoor air of mushroom cultivation houses, the materials used for preparation of mushroom cultivation media, wild plants, and funitures. This study reports the descriptions of the 18 unrecorded fungal species: Aspergillus creber, Ceratocystis paradoxa, Colletotrichum spaethianum, Coniochaeta velutina, Coprinellus xanthothrix, Epicoccum sorghinum, Leptosphaeria rubefaciens, Myrothecium gramineum, Paraconiothyrium fuckelii, Penicillium erubescens, Penicillium melinii, Penicillium pulvillorum, Penicillium sabulosum, Penicillium turbatum, Pestalotiopsis portugalica, Pilidiella castaneicola, Rachicladosporium pini, and Umbelopsis nana. For all the identified species, the morphological characteristics including the features of colony formed on media, images of light microscopy, and molecular phylogenetic relationships based on nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA), 18S rDNA, 28S rDNA, ${\beta}-tubulin$ gene, calmodulin gene, and translation elongation factor gene were described.

  • During a series of extensive surveys of prokaryotic species diversity in Korea, bacterial strains belonging to Gammaproteobacteria were isolated from various sources of aquatic and terrestrial environments. A total of 39 isolates were obtained, which represented 39 unrecorded species in Korea belonging to 20 genera in 12 families. Enterobacteriaceae was the largest family, as eight species were assigned, which was followed by Moraxellaceae (6 species) and Pseudomonadaceae (5 species). At the genus level, Marinobacter (6 species), and Pseudomonas (5 species) were the main genera, and at least two species were obtained for Acinetobacter (3 species), Psychrobacter (3 species), Shewanella (2 species), Dickeya (2 species), Salinivibrio (2 species), Vibrio (2 species) and Rhodanobacter(2 species). The detailed description of each unrecorded species is provided.

  • Diverse wild yeast were isolated from freshwaters and soils of Nakdong and Yeongsan rivers in Korea and identified by the comparison of polymerase chain reaction-amplified nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region (including the 5.8S rRNA) and D1/D2 regions of 26S rDNA, using BLAST. In total, 15 strains belonging to 9 species were isolated from 25 samples, out of which Aureobasidium pullulans and Cryptococcus bestiolae were dominant. Candida ghanaensis JSF0127 and Meira geulakonigii JSF0130 were identified as unrecorded yeasts, for which their mycological characteristics were investigated. These unrecorded yeasts formed ascospores and grew in yeast extract peptone dextrose medium containing 5% NaCl.

  • Two Unrecorded species from Jeju Province are reported: Maesa japonica of Maesaceae which is unrecorded family and Cardamine tanakae of Brassicaceae. Monotypic family Maesaceae, is distinguished from Myrsinaceae and Primulaceae by having pedicels with a pair of bracteoles, flowers without staminodia, semi-inferior ovary and indehiscent fruits with many seeds. M. japonica is readily distinguishable from M. salicifolia in China and M. montana var. formosana in Taiwan and Japan by shapes of blades, corolla and bracteoles, the presence/absence of serrulation of leaf margins, ratio of length of corolla tube and corolla lobes, feature and color of fruit surface. C. tanakae is most similar to Korean endemic C. glechomifolia in morphology, however, the two taxa are readily distinguishable by the number of leaflets of cauline leaves, size of terminal leaflets, number of flowers per inflorescence, the presence of whitish hairs on ovary and fruits.
