Experimental Study on Tip Clearance Effects for Performance Characteristics of Ducted Fan

  • Currently, a new generation of ducted fan UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) is under development for a wide range of inspection, investigation and combat missions as well as for a variety of civil roles like traffic monitoring, meteorological studies, hazard mitigation etc. The current study presents extensive results obtained experimentally in order to investigate the tip clearance effects on performance characteristics of a ducted fan for small UAV systems. Three ducted fans having different tip clearance gap and with same rotor size were examined under three different yawed conditions of calibrated slanted hot-wire probe. Three dimensional velocity flow fields were measured from hub to tip at outlet of the ducted fan. The analysis of data were done by PLEAT (Phase locked Ensemble Averaging Technique) and three non-linear differential equations were solved simultaneously by using Newton -Rhapson numerical method. Flow field characteristics such as tip vortex and secondary flow were confirmed through axial, radial and tangential velocity contour plots. At the same time, the effects of tip clearance on axial thrust and input power were also investigated by using wind tunnel measurement system. For enhancing the performance of ducted fan, tip clearance level should be as small as possible.

Guidance Law for Vision-Based Automatic Landing of UAV

  • In this paper, a guidance law for vision-based automatic landing of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is proposed. Automatic landing is a challenging but crucial capability for UAVs to achieve a fully autonomous flight. In an autonomous landing maneuver of UAVs, the decision of where to landing and the generation of guidance command to achieve a successful landing are very significant problem. This paper is focused on the design of guidance law applicable to automatic landing problem of fixed-wing UAV and rotary-wing UAV, simultaneously. The proposed guidance law generates acceleration command as a control input which derived from a specified time-to-go ($t_go$) polynomial function. The coefficient of $t_go$-polynomial function are determined to satisfy some terminal constraints. Nonlinear simulation results using a fixed-wing and rotary-wing UAV models are presented.

복합재 태양광 무인기 날개 일체성형 제작기법 연구 (A Study on Manufacturing Methods of Cocuring Composite Wings of Solar-Powered UAV)

  • In order to suggest the optimal manufacturing technology of composite wings of solar-powered unmanned aerial vehicles, this study compared forming technologies to reduce wing weight for long-endurance flight and to improve the manufacturing process for cost-saving and mass production. It compared the manufacturing time and weight of various composite wing molding technologies, including cocuring, secondary bonding, and manufacturing by balsa. As a result, wing weight was reduced through cocuring methods such as band type composite fiber/tape lamination technology, which enabled prolonged flight duration. In addition, the reduced manufacturing time led to a lower cost, which is a good example of weight lightening for not only small solar-powered UAVs, but also composite aircraft.

IMU-바로미터 기반의 수직변위 추정용 이단계 칼만/상보 필터 (A Two-step Kalman/Complementary Filter for Estimation of Vertical Position Using an IMU-Barometer System)

  • Estimation of vertical position is critical in applications of sports science and fall detection and also controls of unmanned aerial vehicles and motor boats. Due to low accuracy of GPS(global positioning system) in the vertical direction, the integration of IMU(inertial measurement unit) with the GPS is not suitable for the vertical position estimation. This paper investigates an IMU-barometer integration for estimation of vertical position (as well as vertical velocity). In particular, a new two-step Kalman/complementary filter is proposed for accurate and efficient estimation using 6-axis IMU and barometer signals. The two-step filter is composed of (i) a Kalman filter that estimates vertical acceleration via tilt orientation of the sensor using the IMU signals and (ii) a complementary filter that estimates vertical position using the barometer signal and the vertical acceleration from the first step. The estimation performance was evaluated against a reference optical motion capture system. In the experimental results, the averaged estimation error of the proposed method was 19.7 cm while that of the raw barometer signal was 43.4 cm.

무인항공기의 적응제어 법칙을 이용한 피치 기동 연구 (Pitch-axis Maneuver of UAVs by Adaptive Control Approach)

  • 본 연구는 적응제어기법을 이용한 무인항공기이 피치 자세 기동에 대한 연구 내용을 소개한다. 모델기반적응제어(Model Reference Adaptive Control)을 이용하여 피치 자세각과 엘리베이터 입력 사이의 피드백 선형화 과정에서 발생하는 불확실성을 처리하였다. 모델 불활실성 파라미터는 피드백 제어기가 작동하는 중에 적응법칙을 이용하여 추정할 수 있도록 설계 되었다. 안정화 제어기에 의해 달성되는 최종 피치 자세각에 대한 분석을 통해 폐루프 시스템의 특성을 파악할 수 있도록 하였다. 제안된 제어 기법은 기존 제어기에서 주로 채택하고 있는 선형화나 게인 스케쥴링등의 과정이 필요하지 않아 상당한 모델 오차가 존재하는 상황에서 무인항공기의 고기동 피치 제어기 설계에 도움을 줄 것으로 생각한다.

  • This research aims to study the effects of the incidence angle and surface temperature on the power generation performance of a thin-film CIGS solar cell for solar powered unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The test rig consists of a unit CIGS solar cell is installed on a table whose angle is controlled manually. A K-type thermocouple is attached to the solar cell surface for temperature measurements. A solar module analyzer measures the voltage and current generated from the test solar cell. The solar module analyzer also calculates the maximum solar power and efficiency of the solar cell. All test data are acquired in a PC. Test results show that the solar cell efficiency decreases significantly with increasing incidence angle and increasing surface temperature in general. As the incidence angle increases from 0 degree to 90 degree, the solar cell efficiency decreases by 60%. The solar cell efficiency decreases by 10% with increasing solar cell surface temperature from $20^{\circ}C$ to $30^{\circ}C$, for exmaple. The direct cooling method of the solar cell using dry ice decreases dramatically the solar cell surface temperature, thus increasing the solar cell efficiency by 15%.

다수 위협에 대한 무인항공기 최적 경로 계획 (Optimal Path Planning for UAVs under Multiple Ground Threats)

  • 본 논문은 레이더와 같은 지상의 다수위협이 존재하는 상황에서 무인항공기의 비행경로 최적화에 관한 것이다. 레이더에 의한 피탐성, 즉 비행체에 의해 반사되는 레이더 신호강도를 최소화하면서 목적지까지의 비행시간을 최소화하는 관점에서 성능지수를 제안하였다. 1차의 시간지연 시스템으로 가정된 비행체의 경사각을 제어입력으로 고려하였으며, Sequential Quadratic Programming기법에 기반한 입력 파라미터 최적화 기법을 사용하여 궤적최적화를 수행하였다. 제안된 무인 항공기 경로계획 기법은 Voronoi 선도기법과 비교하였을 때, 생존성을 증대시키면서도 항공기의 역학적 특성을 고려한 비행경로를 제공한다.

Korean Wide Area Differential Global Positioning System Development Status and Preliminary Test Results

  • This paper is focused on dynamic modeling and control system design as well as vision based collision avoidance for multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Multi-rotor UAVs are defined as rotary-winged UAVs with multiple rotors. These multi-rotor UAVs can be utilized in various military situations such as surveillance and reconnaissance. They can also be used for obtaining visual information from steep terrains or disaster sites. In this paper, a quad-rotor model is introduced as well as its control system, which is designed based on a proportional-integral-derivative controller and vision-based collision avoidance control system. Additionally, in order for a UAV to navigate safely in areas such as buildings and offices with a number of obstacles, there must be a collision avoidance algorithm installed in the UAV's hardware, which should include the detection of obstacles, avoidance maneuvering, etc. In this paper, the optical flow method, one of the vision-based collision avoidance techniques, is introduced, and multi-rotor UAV's collision avoidance simulations are described in various virtual environments in order to demonstrate its avoidance performance.

드론의 문화산업분야 활용방안에 관한 연구 (Use of Drones in the cultural industries)

  • Drones are more formally known as unmanned aerial vehicles without a human pilot aboard. Its flight is controlled either autonomously by onboard computers or by the remote control of a pilot on the ground. This research aims to analyze market trends and technological developments of drones, use cases and constraints of drones in the cultural industries take advantage of the possibility of future drones. Drones are looking for broadcasting, movie, theater, games, toys drones and racing games in a variety of cultural industry. The biggest problem of drone shall provide penalties for breaches of privacy and security issues in the debate. Drones performances are required such as battery capacity and compactness because of the technical limitations. The drones are expected to be used in various fields such as journalism drone, performance tools, augmented reality games, kidult culture. The drones can create a new cultural industry market such as the combination of robotics and drone journalism, drone crowded theater, utilizing drones character games, racing games etc. In conclusion, drones help reduce manpower, time and costs dramatically and will contribute to creating added value in the cultural industries.

Smart-UAV 데이터링크 신뢰성 향상을 위한 RF 시스템 및 통신 링크 분석 (The Analysis of RF System and Communication Link for improvement in reliability of Smart UAV Data-Link)

  • 본 논문에서는 스마트 무인항공기의 데이터 링크의 신뢰성 향상을 위하여 그것을 구성하는 RF 송수신 시스템의 성능 분석 및 통신링크 분석을 수행하였다. 시스템 분석은 데이터 링크의 개발 사양서 및 사용되는 부품의 data sheet를 참조하여 시스템 시뮬레이션 툴인 Agilent EEsof ADS(Advanced Design System)을 이용하여 수행하였고, 통신링크 분석은 스마트 무인항공기 운용 환경에 맞는 다양한 전파 모델들을 이용하여 분석하였다. 그 결과, 시뮬레이션 결과와 개발 사양서에서 나타난 문제점들을 제시하였고, 통신링크 분석을 통해 나타난 문제점 및 시스템 설계를 위한 고려사항에 대하여 제시하였다.
