  • Cognitive radio, which is designed to dynamically adapt its transmission to the environments, is believed to be one of the fundamental techniques for future spectrum utilization. As the first step of cognitive radio, spectrum sensing is treated as the most important technique, through which cognition is well explained. In this paper, we propose a spectral correlation based detection method for spectrum sensing. An unlicensed secondary user system operating in TV broadcast bands is taken as an example. Based on the cyclostationarity of communication signals, spectral correlation function is used to minimize the effect of random noise and interference. Energy measurement and peak detection based criteria are proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed detection method outperforms the energy detection and is more suitable for spectrum sensing in cognitive radios.

  • Noncontiguous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems achieve highly efficient spectrum utilization by transmitting unlicensed users' data on subcarriers of licensed users' data when they are free. However, there are two disadvantages to the NC-OFDM system: out-of-band power (OBP) and a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). OBP arises due to side lobes of an NC-OFDM signal in the frequency domain, and it interferes with the spectrum for unlicensed users. A high PAPR occurs due to the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) block used in an NC-OFDM system, and it induces nonlinear effects in power amplifiers. In this study, we propose an algorithm called "Alternative Projections onto Convex and Non-Convex Sets" that reduces the OBP and PAPR simultaneously. The alternate projections are performed onto these sets to form an iteration, and it converges to the specified limits of in-band-power, peak amplitude, and OBP. Furthermore, simulations show that the bit error rate performance is not degraded while reducing OBP and PAPR.

  • Wireless network information services allow end systems to discover heterogeneous networks and spectrum available for secondary use at or near their current location, helping them to cope with increasing traffic and finite spectrum resources. We propose a unified architecture that allows end systems to find nearby base stations that are using either licensed, shared or unlicensed spectrum across multiple network operators. Our study evaluates the performance and scalability of spatial databases storing base station coverage area geometries. The measurement results indicate that the current spatial databases perform well even when the number of coverage areas is very large. A single logical spatial database would likely be able to satisfy the query load for a large national cellular network. We also observe that coarse geographic divisions can significantly improve query performance.

  • Dynamic spectrum sharing is a key technology to improve spectrum utilization in wireless networks. The elastic spectrum management provides a new opportunity for licensed primary users and unlicensed secondary users to efficiently utilize the scarce wireless resource. In this paper, we present a game-theoretic framework for dynamic spectrum allocation where the primary users rent the unutilized spectrum to the secondary users for a monetary profit. In reality, due to the ON-OFF behavior of the primary user, the quantity of spectrum that can be opportunistically shared by the secondary users is limited. We model this situation with the renewal theory and formulate the spectrum pricing scheme with the Bertrand game, taking into account the scarcity of the spectrum. By the Nash-equilibrium pricing scheme, each player in the game continually converges to a strategy that maximizes its own profit. We also investigate the impact of several properties, including channel quality and spectrum substitutability. Based on the equilibrium analysis, we finally propose a decentralized algorithm that leads the primary users to the Nash-equilibrium, called DST. The stability of the proposed algorithm in terms of convergence to the Nash equilibrium is also studied.

  • Spectrum sensing is the key challenge in implementing cognitive radio system, which enables unlicensed users to identify "white holes" in the spectrum allocated to primary users and utilize them efficiently. Recent studies have proposed three major sensing methods for WRAN systems, including matched filter, energy and feature detector. However, there are some drawbacks along with them. In this paper, we propose an enhanced energy detector that extends the ability of conventional one, which can differentiate the primary users from each other as well as the noise with different maximum-to-mean power ratio. Furthermore, a novel structure of cognitive radio detector employing the proposed algorithm is also analyzed to implement spectrum sensing. The simulation result shows that our proposed scheme performs well in the individual sensing environment and can satisfy the requirement with high detection probability.

  • We propose a new priority discipline called the strict T-preemptive priority discipline, and derive the waiting time distributions of each class in the strict T-preemptive priority M/G/1 queue. Using this queueing analysis, we evaluate the performance of an opportunistic spectrum access in cognitive radio networks, where a communication channel is divided into time slots, a licensed primary user is assigned to one channel, and multiple unlicensed secondary users may opportunistically exploit time slots unused by the primary user. We also present a numerical example of the analysis of the opportunistic spectrum access where the arrival rates and service times distributions of each users are identical.

We propose a cognitive MAC protocol using statistical channel information and selecting appropriate idle channel for transmission. The protocol based on the CSMA/CA, exploits statistics of spectrum usage for decision making on channel access. Idle channel availability, spectrum hole sufficiency and available channel condition will be included in algorithm statistical information. The model include the control channel and data channel, the transmitter negotiates with receiver on transmission parameters through control channel, statistical decision results (successful rate of transmission) from exchanged transmission parameters of control channel should pass the threshold and decide the data transmission with spectrum hole on data channel. A dynamical sensing range as a important parameter introduced to maintain the our protocol performance. The proposed protocol's simulation will show that proposed protocol does improve the throughput performance via traditional opportunistic spectrum access MAC protocol.
