  • There has been an ongoing symbiotic relationship between the history of the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction(ICMI) and the broader history of mathematics education since 1908. Similarly, the International Congress on Mathematical Education(ICME) has played an important role in the direction of Mathematics education since its first congress in 1969. ICME-12 is due to be held in Seoul, Korea from July $8^{th}$ to $15^{th}$ 2012. To date, there has been no research paper concerning the history of the ICMI published in any Korean journal. In readiness for the upcoming ICME-12, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of the IMCI from the perspective of Mathematics education.

  • The research on the Olympic mathematics education has become an internationally recognized educational activity. In some cities of China, especially big cities, the Olympic mathematics education is developing like raging fire. Many parents send their children to training school to get the Olympic mathematics education, no matter whether the children are willing to or not. They hope that through the training, their children can be outstanding when entering higher school. However, this practice has deeply affected children's learning initiative. In this paper, we analyzed both the history and the present situation of the Olympic mathematics education in China. We have some suggestions based on the problems emerging nowadays.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a teaching/learning model for the mathematical enculturation of elementary and secondary school students. It is clear that the development of teaching and learning in the classroom is essential for the realization of global innovations in mathematics education. Research questions for this purpose are as follow: (1) What can be learned from literatures reviews of the socio-cultural perspective on mathematics education, and of ethnomathematics as a mathematics intrinsic to cultural activities? (2) What is the direction of teaching and learning from the perspective of mathematical enculturation? (3) What is the teaching /learning model for mathematical enculturation? (4) What is the instructional exemplification based on the developed model? This study promotes the establishment of mathematics education theory from the review of literatures on the socio-cultural perspective, the development of a teaching/learning model, and the instructional exemplification based on the developed model.

  • The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in mathematics education has advanced as a means for promoting understanding of mathematical concepts, academic achievement, computational thinking, and problem-solving. From a total of 13 studies in this special issue, this editorial reveals threads of potential and future directions to advance mathematics education with the integration of AI. We generated five themes as follows: (1) using ChatGPT for learning mathematical content, (2) automated grading systems, (3) statistical literacy and computational thinking, (4) integration of AI and digital technology into mathematics lessons and resources, and (5) teachers' perceptions of AI education. These themes elaborate on the benefits and opportunities of integrating AI in teaching and learning mathematics. In addition, the themes suggest practical implementations of AI for developing students' computational thinking and teachers' expertise.

Domestic research trends of mathematics teacher education: Focused on the journals published since 2000 by the Korean Society of Mathematics Education (국내 수학 교사교육 연구의 동향 분석: 2000년 이후 게재된 한국수학교육학회의 학술지 논문을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends of domestic research on mathematics teacher education in terms of the period, topics, methods, subjects, and mathematics content strands. For this purpose, a total of 220 research articles dealing with mathematics teacher education were analyzed, which have been published since 2000 by the Korean Society of Mathematics Education in the three journals: (a) The Mathematical Education; (b) Education of Primary School Mathematics; and (c) Communications of Mathematical Education. Regarding the period when the research was conducted, the number of articles on mathematics teacher education has been rapidly increased since the late 2000s. Regarding the topics, research on teacher orientation has been the most frequent topic and the studies dealing with professional development for teachers, teaching practices, or teacher knowledge tend to be popular. Regarding methods, survey and case study have been most frequently employed in studying mathematics teacher education. Regarding subjects, the main participants were in-service teachers, pre-service teachers, elementary school teachers, and secondary school teachers, respectively, who were in charge of a regular class. Finally, regarding mathematics content strands, previous studies on mathematics teacher education were not specific to mathematics content strands. Given these results, this paper closes with important implications for future research directions on mathematics teacher education in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to review the trends of international and domestic research in mathematics education for social justice and to present the meanings to the mathematics education in Korean mathematics education. For Korean mathematics educators and teachers, interest and research in mathematics education for social justice is still insufficient. For this study, the researcher analyzed the concerned research on mathematics education for social justice. According to the study, international research on social justice were started with Freire's critical mathematics education in the 1970s and has been actively conducted from various perspectives and has been applied to their mathematics lessons. However, domestic studies on mathematics education for social justice have recently been started. The implications of mathematics education for social justice is that it provides an opportunity for reflection on traditional mathematics lessons and enables integration and convergence with humanities perspective. This approach can also foster a positive attitude toward mathematics and deepen the view of mathematics and the world of teachers and students. The researcher proposed to include mathematics education for social justice in Korean mathematics curriculum and textbooks, support teachers' professionalism by teacher training programs, and continue to develop a more sophisticated education model through practical applications.
