  • Korean university libraries are increasing their library collection each year according to the standard set by the Ministry of Education. The standard states that all the university libraries are required to keep 3 books for newly enrolling students, 30 books for each enrolled student and 5, 000 books for each department. The increasing number of the university library collection brings many problems in the libraries. 1. The size of the library collection is not related to the satisfaction of the library user's requests. The satisfaction is usually related to number of the new publications received in the library. Z. The Korean publication is limited to a small number. It could not meet the university standard. Therefore, the number is filled with the foreign publications. But the use of them is not frequent. Even the number of the domestic and foreign new publications together could not meet all the requests of the university library users. Only cooperation with other libraries will be able to meet most of the diversified requests. 3. Most of the present library collection are not likely to be used in the future and they should be eventually discarded. Present library administration put too much emphasis on the size of library collection and only the aquisition of the material is main concern of the university librarians. They need to consider other factors in the aquistion of the library collection. They should make their collection development in accordance with user's requests in addition to meet the university standard.

  • Research is one of main roles of university and its importance has been emphasized gradually since a few decades ago. Yet, the objective and concrete criterion lot the definition of the research university is not available in Korea, Accordingly, the role of the research university library is not established as a key system for research university. In this study the criterion for the United States research university is applied to domestic universities, thereby current status of research universities and their libraries between the United States and Korea is analyzed comparatively. Fundamental data including budget, employees and information resources for pursuing high research competitiveness necessary for the research university library are provided based on comparative analysis of 98 research university libraries in the United States and 38 domestic research university libraries. Correlation analysis data between library investment and research Publication are also provided. Finally this study can be used, hopefully, as a milestone for the establishing strategy of domestic research university libraries.

  • This thesis investigated disabled students' actual status of applying for university libraries. This thesis investigated how many times the university disabled students utilized the libraries, if facilities, apparatuses, materials, and regular employees were operated properly, and if they were established actually on the target at thirty private university libraries located at Seoul and Gyeonggi regions in operation of specially screening the objective students for special education in 2008. The investigation found that the general operation level of university libraries for disabled students were less than "medium"(average 2.38). As for utilization ratio, the most university students responded that "they didn't utilize libraries so many times(60%)". As for the response ratio of university library facilities and services, the most university students responded, "very insufficient", 99 items(32.27%), and the least university students responded, "very excellent", 28 items(7.0%). On the other hand, as for the analysis of each field, building facilities, in all of the items, were established more than "medium"(average 3.26), but material preparation level(average 1.8 point), employee education for softly supporting disabled students, and library utilization education on the target at disabled students(average 1.87) were less than "insufficient". Especially, the field of service was "insufficient level"(average 2.48), and standard deviation was more than 1.4. Manpower stationing and material delivery services have the biggest standard deviation between universities. So, this investigation found that university libraries reformed access to facilities a lot, but that its level of fundamental policy for library, such as materials, manpower, and the education on utilization, were in insufficient level.

  • This study investigated the influence of job motivation on job performance of library personnel in university libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design type was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of 164 library personnel in university libraries in Oyo State. An adapted questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. PPMC were used for hypotheses testing at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the level of job performance of library personnel among university libraries in Oyo State was high ( x =2.85) and that the level of job motivation (promotion, compensation, conducive work environment) of library personnel among the sampled universities was also high ( x =2.77). More so, the findings of the hypothesis disclosed that there is a significant and positive relationship between job motivation (p= 0.029 < 0.05) and job performance of library personnel among universities in Oyo State. It was recommended that library leadership should make provision for motivational ingredients that can serve as an encouragement for the library personnel to enhance the level of their job performance.

  • Gene expression in five tissues of the abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) was investigated using an expressed sequence tag (EST) analysis. Randomly selected clones were obtained from cDNA libraries constructed with gill (GI), digestive diverticula(DD), hepatopancreas (HP), foot/mucus (FM) and rectangular muscle (RM). Of 1,235 clonesanalyzed (288 clones for GI, DD, HP each,166 for FM, and 205 for RM), 741 (60.0%) clones in total turned out to share significant similarity with the sequences from NCBI GenBank (less than 10/sup -3/ of e-values), 423 sequences showed poor similarity (> 10/sup -3/), and 71 sequences didn't match with any sequences in GenBank. The percent unique sequence (singleton) was ranged from 56.1% (RM) to 74.7% (FM) among libraries. On the other hand, overall percent singleton was 55.3% when all the ESTs from five libraries were assembled into contigs. Analysis of the organisms represented by the best hit for each EST (e-values < 10/sup -3/) showed that 23.8% matched with mammalian entries, 24.0% with mollusks, 14.4% with insects, 11.6% with fish and 26.2% with others. The expressed patterns differed among the tissues when judged by the categorization of the sequences from each library into 10 broad functional classes. In all the libraries, the class I (no hit o. poor similarity) was the largest category with an average of 40.1%. This largest class was followed by class V (general metabolisms) in DD (21.9%), GI (14.6%) and HP (16.7%), while the 'cell structure and motility'(class VI) was the second largest class in remaining two libraries (31.2% for RM and 9.6% for FM). The class IX (cell division and proliferation) was the smallest class in all the libraries (less than 3%). This report provides the first tissue-specific lists of expressed abalone genes, which could be a fundamental basis for genomics program of abalone species.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the operational state of Distance universities' electronic libraries through the Lifelong Education Law, and to find out the related problems. The main investigational focus was on the operational methodologies of the libraries and the usage levels of the full-text service. The data were collected through accessing the URLs of 17 Distance universities authorized till 2005. The result is that every university is operating their libraries either on their own $(17.7\%)$ or by using the links to the external libraries $(82.4\%)$. However, only $(35.3\%)$ of the surveyed universities provide the full-text service available on the Internet. Thus, in order to establish the fourth generation Distance university based on the Internet and Web, it is urgently needed to improve the construction and operation standards of electronic libraries in the Lifelong Education Law.

  • This study is aimed at examination and analysis of current status of university library's line and staff organization especially the private university's. Motivation for this study is based on the following facts : First, the library work now is changing from the conventional one to automated one. Second, librarians in the front line must be trained in the newly set work because of the separation of work process in automated libraries. Methodologies of this study, apart from theoretical aspects, were visiting and interviewing librarians at 30 university libraries, examining the current status and problems of the line and staff organization of the university libraries. The result from the study is as follows: First, interviewing reveals that 35% of the 75 private university library is having 'associate directorship by librarian' system. Benefits from this system are described, recommending other University libraries adopt this system. This system su n.0, pplements the weak point of concurrent director's office of lay professor, as well as encourages librarian's morale by promotion. Second, the current organization of the university libraries are to be reformed. Namely, 1) the name of each division must be newly and a n.0, ppropriately set of changed suiting for the work of automated library, thus reforming the division. This must be conducted via collection of opinions of the Korean Library and Information Science Society' and associated organizations. 2) Newly formed division(for example, administrative division or division of operation and management, division conducting digital library work, etc.) must be added to the line and staff organization. 3) For information service division, there must be a certain number of subject specialists. 4) Status of the directorship of university library, librarianship, issue of renaming of university library are also described.
