  • Purpose: Recently, Universal design has been applied to a variety of concepts of social integration in the national legislation and institutions, however, the applying to urban railway station is not satisfied. Most of cases, the handicapped can not work continuously, universal design must be provided. Methods: This study derives the detailed criteria through comparing and analyzing an national and international universal design-related system in transit zone. And the status is investigated in transit zone of domestic urban railway station. Improved national standard requirements are derived considering the type of the handicapped and universal design principles. Result: The domestic status shows that the most lacking entry criteria is not specified in national standards or the design is a lowest-level required by criteria through comparing detailed criteria drawn into domestic analysis. Therefore, in order to provide a pedestrian environment to meet the universal design principles and requirements for the handicapped, there is a need to re-establish with a specific national standards. Implications: This study will draw on universal design standards for seamless transfer in transit zone of urban railway station. The next studies are needed to target the overall paths ranging from outside to landing in urban railway station.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the living environment design of orphanage based on universal design. The 3 orphanages which were rebuilded recently was selected and evaluated by checklists. The checklists which are based on 'Universal Design Principles' are consist of 120 items. The major results are summarized as follows: 1) The items related to safety were insufficient such as separation of pedestrian passage, rounded edge. 2) The items related to accessibility were high grade such as width of corridor, curb height. 3) Private zones for sleep, study and storage are needed more and living room is needed more furnitures for activities to increase friendship in the family of orphanage. The results will be expected to make contributions to developing orphanage environment design based on universal design, to understanding the nature of universal design paradigm.

  • The recent diversification of society surrounding libraries is influencing the services of libraries. This study suggested the directions of public library services from the aspect of the universal design based on the analysis of related systems and cases to provide all users with universal services in accord with the nature of public libraries amid rapidly changing social environment. This study suggests four directions: the "universal design" which is the keyword for pursuing universality of public library services; the pursuit of economic value of public library services based on the universal design; the universal design for the improvement of perception of public library services; change in policies and systems related to public library services through the application of the universal design.

  • If the architecture will made the focus of real user for convenience, it must be the real user, which is the multiple specified persons, more over, the most disadvantages side person will be considered that would be the convenient architecture for all. This principle of universal design has been started the latest 1950's, in USA, Sweden, Canada has considered to the disabled person in the concept of universal design, at 1960's. In case of our country, after 1988's handicapped Olympics, the induction of universal design is started to adapt in the era of architecture. Nowadays, in the group of study, their research, presentation increasing the example, which is carried out the enthusiasm of legislatiov. But we are much as far behind the senior nation, in regard to the lack of the vouluntary participating as the professional. This study is to analyze the principle, concept of Universal design from the department store, which is the convenient facilities, present the usable checklist in time of induction of Universal desigv.

  • The modern public facility has been changed by complexity and diversity. It pursues public facility applying safety and amenity based on universal design. Among public facilities, the importance of street furniture is emphasized currently due to offer for pedestrians rest ares in a city street. However, it is very difficult for pedestrians to use street furniture conveniently and safely, because on the planning street furniture has not been considered thoroughly in aspects of universal design. The Purpose of this study is to evaluate street furniture in aspects of universal design. Also, this study suggests the Improvement plan for considering users of street furnitures. The method of this study is literature review and questionnaire survey. Firstly, we collected the data related to public facility and universal design, analyzed the data. Secondly, the items of questionnaire survey deduced based on analyzed data of literature review. Thirdly, we analyzed the result of questionnaire survey and evaluate the street furniture. Lastly, We discussed the solution to improve the present street furniture for a rest through the results and overseas cases. It has contributed in the improvement plan of street furniture thanks to deal with the evaluation of street furniture for pedestrians in aspects of universal design.

  • Universal Design is comprised of three main concepts known as barrier-free, adaptive and life-span design. It does not focus on accessibility for the disabled, but rather expands its breadth to the comfortable use and easy access in ail physical environments and facilities. In this study, the researcher views the present and future of universal design through the cases of kitchen design. Based on the market changes in design guidelines and the changes of time uncovered from past studies, this researcher suggests that universal design would develop through mass customization for personalized use, application of new technology and consideration of psychological aspects. Additionally, for the diffusion of universal design appropriate solution in economic cost problem, social recognition and conversion of problem cognizance in designing is needed. In Korea design models of universal design concepts are not yet in production over various fields. In order to develop and study universal design which suits our country, cultural and regional characteristics should be considered as well as physical, perceptual, psychological aspects.

  • Purpose: Recently accomodations are required to apply universal designs to all the types of rooms in order to increase accessibility to everyone. Especially universal designs are considered as one of the important methods to help disabled users utilizing accomodations with minimizing difficulties. The current research attempted to apply universal designs to ordinary rooms for promoting usage of rooms in accomodations. Methods: The field study were executed about all the types of rooms and shared spaces in 42 accomodations in 14 cities, Also, the managers working in the studied accomodations were asked to answer the online survey about awareness in universal design. Results: In many cases, ordinary rooms are partially renovated for the disabled with adding some convenient facilities. This raises negative recognition for the rooms specially designed for the disabled as well as absence of needs for universal designed rooms. Meanwhile, universal designed rooms have been required not only for the ordinary but also for the disabled. Implications: Regarding adopting universal design to rooms in accomodations, it should be reviewed throughout all the processes from designing to planning.

  • The concept of universal design has recently emerged as an important aspect of product design. Universal design is considerably analogous to ergonomic design in a way that it takes the capabilities and limitations of users into consideration during the product development process. However, relatively few studies have been devoted to reflect the practical use of ergonomic principles on universal design. This research attempts to develop a universal design index for mobile phone design to quantify how well a product complies with principles of universal design. The research also emphasizes on ergonomic principles as a basis of evaluation. A generation of the evaluation items was done by cross-checking among the personal, activity and product components. Personal components consist of human characteristics including age, physique, perceptual capacity, life-style, etc. Activity components were derived from those scenarios of mobile phone use while product components were composed of the parts to which a user interacts. Further analysis systematically generated a universal index from relationship matrices among the three components. The index was then used to test its suitability by applying to the evaluation of mobile phones currently on the market. This study demonstrates a development process through which evaluations can be made possible for universal design. The research suggests an improved approach to the appraisal of how well mobile phones are universally designed based on ergonomic principles.

  • The necessity of universal design for forestry is increasing. Although several studies applied universal design in forest site, they had been only concentrated on the barrier-free design for the limited activities rather than overall utilization for considering all visitors from the disabled, the elderly and the infirm to the baby and child. The purpose of this study is to find out the principle of the universal design within forest welfare service facilities by analysing how socially disadvantaged people perceive overall usage of natural recreation forest area. This study figures out the main principles of universal design in forest welfare through analyzing usage of children and disabilities in Yumyeongsan natural recreation forest where is one of the popular type of forest welfare area. By doing focus interviews targeted on children and disabilities, the results are analyzed through semantic network analysis, objectively. The result proves that universal design in forest welfare area contains four principles; convenience, safety, diversity and amenity. Also it confirmed that disabilities need better internal space facilities and priority care. Through those characters of universal design, forest area will be able to cover more various type of users as forest welfare area.
