To design the minor structures in the small watersheds, it is required to calculate the peak discharge. For these calculations the simple peak flow prediction equations, the unit hydrograph method. the syntheic unit hydrograph methods or the runoff simulation models are adopted. To use these methods it is generally requried to know the amount and the distributions of the design rainfall; which are the uniform distribution, the trangular distribution, the trapezoidal distribution, or the Huff type distribution. In this study, the peak discharges are calculated by the different rainfall distributions and the results are compared.

To estimate the nutrient loads from an agricultural watershed, SWAT model and Unit Loading Factor method which was proposed by Ministry of Environment were applied for study watershed. The observed hydrologic and water quality data were compared with estimated methods for the Balhan HP#6 study watershed having an area of $3.86km^2$. The estimated nutrient loads were found to be similar values with the observed.

This study aimed to develop the indicator-based approach to assess water use vulnerability in watersheds and applied to the unit watershed within the Han River watershed. Vulnerability indices were comprised of three sub-components (exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity) with respect to water use. The indicators were made up of 16 water use indicators. Then we estimated vulnerability indices using the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution approach (TOPSIS). We collected environmental and socio-economic data from national statistics database, and used them for simulated results by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. For estimating the weighted values for each indicator, expert surveys for subjective weight and data-based Shannon's entropy method for objective weight were utilized. With comparing the vulnerability ranks and analyzing rank correlation between two methods, we evaluated the vulnerabilities for the Han River watershed. For water use, vulnerable watersheds showed high water use and the water leakage ratio. The indices from both weighting methods showed similar spatial distribution in general. Such results suggests that the approach to consider different weighting methods would be important for reliably assessing the water use vulnerability in watersheds.

This thesis is the final report which has long been studied by the author to obtain the design basis for various hydrological constructions with the specific system suitable to the natural environmental conditions in Korea. This report is divided into two parts: one is to estimate runoff volume from watersheds and the other to estimate the peak discharge for a single storm. According to the result of observed runoff record from watersheds, it is known that Kajiyama formula is useful instrument in estimating runoff volume from watersheds in this country. But it has been found that this formula shows us 20-30% less than the actual flow. Therefore, when wihed to bring a better result, the watershed characteristics coefficient in this formula, that is, f-value, should be corrected to 0.5-0.8. As for the method to estimate peak discharge from drainage basin, the author proposes to classify it in two ways; one is small size watershed and the other large size watershed. The maximum -flood discharge rate $Q_p$ and time to peak Pt obtained from the observed record on the small size watershed are compared by various methods and formulas which are based upon the modern hydrological knowledge. But it was fou.d that it. was not a satisfied result. Therefore, the author proposes. tocomputate $Q_p$, to present 4.0-5.0% for the total runoff volume ${\Sigma}Q$.${\Sigma}Q$ is computed under the assumption of 30mm 103s in watershed per day and to change the theoritical total flow volume to one hour dura tion total flow rate when design daily storm is given. Time to peak Pt is derived from three parameters which are u,w,k. These are computed by relationship between total runoff volume (ha-m unit)and $Q_p$. (C.M.S. unit). Finally, the author checked out these results obtained from 51 hydrographs and got a satisfied result. Therefore the author suggested the model of design dimensionless unit-hydrograph. And the author believes that this model will be much available at none runoff record river site. In the large size watersheds in Korea when the maximum discharge occurs, the effective rainfall is two consequtive stormy days. So the loss in watershed was assutned as 6Omm/2days,and the author proposed 3-hour-daration hydrograph flow distribution percentage. This distribution percentage will be sure to form the hydrograph coordinate.
Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) System has been used to improve water quality in the Youngsan·Tamjin river basin since 2004. The Basic Policy of TMDLs sets up the standard flow based on the average dry condition or mid-range flow during the last 10 years. However, Target Water Quality (TWQ) assessment on TMDLs has been used to evaluate water quality through eight-day intervals over 36 times a year. The results for allocation evaluation and target water quality evaluation were different from each other in the same unit watershed during the first period. In order to improve the evaluation method, researchers applied Load Duration Curve (LDC) to evaluate water quality in nine unit watersheds of the Youngsan·Tamjin river basin. The results showed that achievement rates of TWQ assessment with the current method and LDC were 67~100% and 78~100%, respectively. Approximately 11% of the achievement rates with use of LDC were higher than those with use of the current method. In conclusion, it is necessary to review the application of the LDC method in all Four Major River Watersheds.

High-definition, geo-referenced digital climate maps can be produced by applying watershed-specific modules to adjust synoptic observations for local effects including cold air drainage. Since there is no information available on North Korean watersheds, existing geospatial technology for digital climate mapping cannot be transferred to North Korea. We applied a watershed extraction algorithm based on ArcHydro to the North Korean portion of ASTER GDEM and utilized geographical information on major rivers and mountains to adjust the products. Proposed hydrologic zoning system for North Korean watersheds consists of 21 river basins, 93 stream basins and 885 catchments. Combined with the existing 840 South Korean hydrologic units, we now have a complete set of 1,725 catchments which may serve a framework for digital climate modeling across whole land area of the Korean Peninsula.
Reliable long-term flows by SWAT-K model were applied to the relationship between stream flow and pollutant load derived from 8-day measured data of Ministry of Environment (MOE) in order to obtain continuous loadograph and evaluate accuracy in water quality modeling for the Chungju dam watershed. The measured flow were compared with flow duration curve from the model, and it showed that measured values corresponded to the almost full range of stream flow conditions except at Odae A. And there was significant relationship ($R^2=0.60{\sim}0.97$) between measured flow and water quality load at all unit-watersheds. Applying this relationship to simulated flows, continuous loadograph was obtained and compared with modeled pollutant loads. Although there were some differences during some dry and flood seasons, those were not significant and overall trend showed a good agreement. From the results, we would be able to derive a continuous loadograph based on measured data at total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) unit-watersheds on a national scale, in which stream flow and water quality have been measured at 8-day intervals since 2004, and this could be helpful to utilize distributed water quality models with difficulty in calibrating and validating parameters from lack of measured data at present.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate five types of eco-village planning in order to introduce a landscape unit concept and theory in Korea. Although they had different backgrounds and motives of eco-villages planning, their common goal is to always maintain ecological planning and design in their villages. As concrete methods of ecological planning, we suggest three fundamental planning theories. 1. The boundary of a plan unit should be a watershed. 2. The survey and analysis of village ecotopes should be done in that defined watershed. 3. These results should be applied in the site and lot planning of eco-villages. These 3 steps should be done in a process and relevantly. In the evaluation of the five eco-village planning types, we found three results. 1. On a viewpoint of watershed, most planners recognized a watershed in survey and planning stages unconsciously. But they did not mention watersheds concretely and did not use this concept in the planning stage. 2. They did not define the concept of ecotope, but most planners recognized land-uses and vegetations of villages and vicinities as ecotopes. Also these could be proper ecotopes, but they did not use these compartment of ecotopes in the planning of ecosystem structure in villages. In addition, they did not deeply survey and analyze the ecotopes of villages and its vicinity. 3. On the viewpoint of sites and lots planning, they did not relevantly use the characteristics of watersheds and ecotopes in sites and lots planning. Therefore, they failed to implement the indigenous lots and subdivisions plan. In the size of lots and sites, they did not seriously consider the carrying capacity of ecosystem. We hope that our suggestion about the establishment of eco-villages planning is a fundamental theoretical framework of ecological planning in future eco-village planning.
In this study, the methodologies for evaluating the low-flow at the ungauged watershed are reviewed and assessed. The ungauged watershed can be classified into different situations such as the partially recorded watershed and the completely ungauged watershed. The extension method and the percentile method are used to evaluated the low-flow at the partially recorded watershed. The drainage-area ratio method and the regional regression method are used at the completely ungauged watershed. These four methods are applied and validated based on the hydrological and geometric data acquired from unit watersheds in Han River basin for TMDLs. In case of partially recorded watershed, the values of low-flow evaluated by the extension method are in better agreement with measured flow-rate rather than those by the percentile method. In case of completely ungauged watershed, the drainage-area method is broadly used to estimate the low-flow. It must be paid attention to consider the treated sewage discharge produced at watersheds when applying the method.

A hydrologic and water quality monitoring network were established in the Balkan-reservoir watershed, which has 29.79 $km^2$ in size, to analyze the characteristics of pollutant loading from an agricultural small watershed. Soil type, land use, hydrologic soil group, population and livestock were also surveyed to make clear the pollutant sources and to calculate the pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method which was proposed by the Ministry of Environment. From the 5-year hydrologic monitoring results, sub-watersheds located in the upstream of the reservoirs showed higher average runoff ratio. The calculated daily pollutant loadings by the unit loading factor method from HP#2 sub-watershed in the downstream of Balkan reservoir, were much greater than observed.
