  • Using several accessible published data sets, we analyzed the temporal change of 137Cs radioactivity (per unit mass of sample) in marine sediments and investigated the effect of the water content of sediment on the 137Cs radioactivity, to understand the behavior of 137Cs present in marine environments. The 137Cs radioactivity in sediments decreased more slowly in the Baltic Sea (near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant) than in the ocean near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP). The 137Cs radioactivity in the sediment near the FDNPP tended to increase as the water content increased, and the water content decreased at certain sampling sites near the FDNPP for several years. Additionally, the decrease in the water content contributed to 51.2% of the average 137Cs radioactivity decrease rate for the same period. Thus, it may be necessary to monitor both the 137Cs radioactivity and the water content for marine sediments to track the 137Cs that was discharged from the sites of Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants where severe accidents occurred.

  • To resolve the problem which is demand and supply imbalance of fine aggregate by the shortage of natural fine aggregate and the environment regulations, the studies for the application of recycled fine aggregate made from waste concrete have been recently carried out. The objective of this study is to shed light on the mechanical properties and durability performance of concrete using recycle fine aggregate with various water to cement ratios and unit water contents. And it is intend to propose the fundamental data for structural application of recycled concrete. In particular, the effects according to the variations of water to cement ratios and unit water contents in recycled concrete with recycled fine aggregate replacement of 100 percent are discussed by the test results, such as air content, slump, time of set, compressive strength, tensile strength, carbonation, chloride penetration.

  • Cracks in soil provide significant preferential pathways for contaminant transport and rainfall infiltration. Water exchange between the soil matrix and crack is crucial to characterize the preferential flow, which is often quantitatively described by a water exchange ratio. The water exchange ratio is defined as the amount of water flowing from the crack into the clay matrix per unit time. Most of the previous studies on the water exchange ratio mainly focused on cracked sandy soils. The water exchange between cracks and clay matrix were rarely studied mainly due to two reasons: (1) Cracks open upon drying and close upon wetting. The deformable cracks lead to a dynamic change in the water exchange ratio. (2) The aperture of desiccation crack in clay is narrow (generally 0.5 mm to 5 mm) which is difficult to model in experiments. This study will investigate the water exchange between a deformable crack and the clay matrix using a newly developed experimental apparatus. An artificial crack with small aperture was first fabricated in clay without disturbing the clay matrix. Water content sensors and suction sensors were instrumented at different places of the cracked clay to monitor the water content and suction changes. Results showed that the water exchange ratio was relatively large at the initial stage and decreased with the increasing water content in clay matrix. The water exchange ratio increased with increasing crack apertures and approached the largest value when the clay was compacted at the water content to the optimal water content. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the crack-clay matrix interface was about one order of magnitude larger than that of saturated soil matrix.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the influence of the various soil water regimes on photosynthesis and growth and development of ginseng plant (3 years). The results were as follows: optimum soil water content for root dry weight and diameter appeared to be 62% of field capacity (13.9% fresh weight basis). The 62% field capacity showed superiority in leaf area, leaf dry weight and also in number of flower, fruit, seed per plant. Net photosynthesis rates per unit area increased with increasing soil water content but net photosynthesis rates per plant were superior in 62% field capacity. Rates of transpiration increased linearly with increasing soil water content but density of stomata decreased with increasing soil water content.

  • This paper presents the optimized mixing design of lightweight aerated concrete using hydrogen peroxide. Design of experiments in order to the optimized mixing design was applied and commercial program (MINITAB) was used. Statistical analysis was used to Box-Behnken (B-B) method in response surface analysis. The influencing factors of experimental are unit cement content, water ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio. According to the analysis of variance, at the hardened state, water ratio and hydrogen peroxide ratio affects on dried density, compressive strength and bending strength of lightweight aerated concrete, but unit cement content affects on only dried density. In the results of response surface analysis, to obtain goal performance, the optimized mixing design for lightweight aerated concrete using hydrogen peroxide were unit cement content of 800 kg/$m^3$, water ratio of 44.33% and hydrogen peroxide ratio of 10%.

  • In this study, a series of laboratory tests based on 'Unit-cell concept' are performed to investigate improvement characteristics of clay ground in sand compaction pile method. Settlement reduction characteristics of composite ground and improvement characteristics of clay part could be qualified. In these procedure, the new strain-compression index($C_{\epsilon}$) of composite ground are adopted to show compressibility of composite ground according to the area replacement ratio, which is similar to the compression index($C_c$) in pure clay ground. Also, using normalization of reduction of water content in composite ground to the initial water content, improvement characteristics of clay part are investigated.

  • In this research, by examining the influence that high quality fine aggregate and low quality fine aggregate have on the strength of concrete through tests, the manifest strength of concrete according to high quality fine aggregate was reviewed. The results showed that compared to low quality fine aggregate usage mixture, the unit volume to achieve the same liquidity decreased and accordingly the W/B also decreased therefore increasing the strength of concrete, and as high quality fine aggregate was used, it is determined that there can be improvements to the economically feasibility of usage mixture and improvement in durability etc.

  • Recently inappropriate aggregates are used as a raw material for ready-mixed concretes, due to the shortage of natural aggregate resources and the prohibition of their extraction for the environmental protection. We, therefore, have conducted experiments to obtain some knowledge of properties of domestic aggregates and to investigate subsequent changes in the properties of the fresh and hardened concretes. To this end, aggregates currently used in 13 domestic ready-mixed concrete plants were collected. Most of aggregate used in this experiment satisfied the KS in density and unit weight. But some of the aggregates have the particle size distribution that can effect bad influence on concrete. In this experiment the aggregates are found to have a bad particle size distribution, resulting in high amount of a unit water content and a unit cement content in concrete.

  • The aim of the research is, for normal strength range concrete mixture, to evaluate the fluidity development and robustness of the mixture depending on various water reducers. Although a usage of water reducer has been essential to make a concrete under the current conditions of worsen aggregate quality, selection of appropriate performance of water reducer is significant. Hence, in this research, regarding the normal strength range mortar, three different performance of water reducers were evaluated in aspects of securing fluidity, and robustness, rheological behaviors. Additionally, for the concrete mixture, the fluidity change was evaluated depending on unit water content for each different water reducer, and the water reducing performance with manufacturing cost was compared and analyzed. By the result of this research, it is expected to provide a case of determining appropriate kind of water reducer and to contribute on conditions of securing sufficient fluidity with stable quality and economical advantage.
