  • Because of the high unit cement content in the concrete mix, major concrete temperature rises are observed in the initial stages of hardening in structural members with large cross-sections made of high-strength concrete. While this temperature rise in the initial stages of hardening contributes to the initial development of the concrete strength, it also causes thermal cracking and obstructs medium to long-term increases of the concrete strength. In the study reports below, investigations were made on the effects of the concrete temperature rise in the initial stages of hardening on the medium to long-term development of the strength of structural concrete between the ages of 28 and 91 days. In the study, comparisons were made, for example, between the compressive strength of a control specimen subjected to standard curing at 28 days and the compressive strength of core specimens taken from structural members, and observations were made on the methods of evaluating the concrete strength in structure, defined here as the compressive strength of core specimens at 91 days. The results obtained indicate that, when the maximum temperature of the concrete is the structure does not exceed $60^{\circ}C$, the concrete strength in structure at the age of long-term will generally be greater than the compressive strength of the standard-curing specimens at 28 days, allowing one to evaluate the strength of the structural concrete in terms of the compressive strength of the 28-days standard-curing specimens. When, on the other hand, the maximum temperature of the concrete in the structure exceeds $60^{\circ}C$, the strength in concrete structure may be smaller than the compressive strength of the 28-days standard-curing specimens, creating risks in the evaluation of the concrete strength in structure by latter.

  • Recently, high performance concrete developed has a good quality at fresh and hardened state, but high binder contents results in spending much money on manufacturing and many cracks by drying and autogenous shrinkage, Therefore, in this paper, not only prevention of cracks caused by drying and autogenous shrinkage, but improvement of quality and accomplishment of economy by applying F.A(fly ash), S.F(silica fume) and CSA(calcium sulfa aluminate) expansive additives as an inorganic admixtures in W/B 35% are discussed. According to the experimental results, when 5% of CSA expansive additives and 15:5(F.A:S.F)are replaced at unit cement content, high performance concrete with both good fluidity at fresh state and high compressive strength, compensation of drying and autogenous shrinkage at hardened state are accomplished.

  • To investigate the relationship between compressive strength ($q_u$) of Lightweight Air-mixed soil (LAS) and its physical deformation coefficient ($E_{50}$), a series of unconfined compressive tests have been performed on specimens of LAS according to various dredged soil types by percentage of sand, silt and clay. From the results it was found that the cement content ($C_i$) and unit weight (${\gamma}_m$) are most influence factors on strength, and percentage of sand, silt, clay by grain size analysis (KS F2302) have more effect on compressive strength than other physical properties of soil. It was also found that the rate of strength (a) increases with curing time, but it reduces with the increase of percentage of clay ($C_%$).

  • This study investigated the effect of artesian pressure on mechanical properties of deep cement mixing (DCM)-improved specimens. Various laboratory tests such as unconfined compression test and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were conducted on DCM specimens which curied in a water tank with different artesian pressures. The artesian pressure was determined in consideration of the laboratory scale and the hydraulic gradient in field conditions. Results of experimental tests indicated that unconfined compressive strength, secant modulus, and unit weight of specimen decreased and water content tended to increase as an artesian pressure increased. The stress-strain behavior changed brittle to ductile behaviors as an artesian pressure increased. The outflow water from the water tank reacted with the phenolphthalein solution due to the leaching phenomenon of the improved specimen. SEM analysis also confirmed that a small amount of ettringite was formed between soil particles in the specimens with artesian pressure.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data which can be applied to the use of concretes. The data was based on the properties of concrectes depending upon water-cement ratios and addings to compare those of plain concrete. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. In case the proper quantity of water reducing agent was added, unit weight of water is decreased to 12.9% with WR-LG of water reducing set standarding agent and to 8.6% with HF-SP of high fluid agent and to 17.2% with AH-WR of water reducing set accelerating agent, respectively, as compared with plain concrete. With the increase of water reducing agent content unit weight of water was greatly decreased. 2. The adding rate of water reducing agent which produce maximum strength was 0.2% with WR-LG and 0.4% with HF-SP and AH-WR, respectively. The increasing rates of strengths were showed that WR-LG is 24.1% and that HF-SP is 41.8% and that AH-WR is 43.3%, respectively, as compared with plain concrete. 3. The correlations between compressive and tensile strength were highly significant as a straight line. the multiple regression equations of compressive and tensile strength were computed with the variables of curing age and addition of water reducing agent. They were highly significant. 4. In case the proper quantity of water reducing agent was added, the correlations between water-cement ratio and compressive strength were highly significant as a straight line. The increasing rates of strength were showed higher than the decreasing rates of water cement-ratio.

  • Recently, as there has been growing demand for aesthetic quality in structural materials, the development of excellent color cement concrete having good coloration properties has become a requirement. This study is designed to analyze the basic physical properties of mortar and the properties of keeping the coloration under an ultraviolet ray accelerated weathering test environment according to changes in the mixing ratio between carbon black and iron oxide used as colorants. The test results show that the use of carbon black and iron oxide reduces the initial flow by 6.3~17.2 % and the air content by 3.5~31.5 % but increases the unit volume weight by 3.4~5.5 %, compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In addition, the study shows that the addition of iron oxide increases the self drying shrinkage. So, caution needs to be taken on the workability of the concrete. The brightness value L represented by black showed the most excellent black colour when carbon black 3 % and iron oxide 5 % are added. According to UV accelerated weatherproof test, the brightness value L was found to increase in all experiment specimens by 4.28~11.97 %, and the color change by UV was found to be higher for the case where carbon black colorant was not used. Therefore, in terms of color revelation characteristics, the case using carbon black 3 % and iron oxide 5 % was found to show the best black color.

  • In this study, in order to develop ultra rapid hardening mortar(URHM) for tunnel repairs using bottom ash of low recycle ratio and Admixture as Eco concept, watertightness and durability properties of URHM on temperature condition of construction field were performed. Test result, seepage quantity and water absorption coefficient regarding watertightness of URHM were as in the following : series II > series I. Seepage quantity for the standard condition were smaller than low temperatures. all specimens were satisfied below 20g as standards of seepage quantity on KS F 4042. Because of the decrease of unit cement content by to replacement of blast furnace slag, the neutrlization resistance for durability properties was reduced. The result of alkali resistance and acide resistance, compressive strengths for specimens soaked in calcium hydroxide solution of seriesI were lower than compressive strengths for specimens not soaked. On the other hand, the case of series II show that the deterioration of compressive strengths for specimens was not almost showed. Compressive strengths of specimens soaked were similar with specimens not soaked except series II-C in $5^{\circ}C$. Therefore, specimens using both blast furnace slag and bottom ash were good in alkali resistance and acide resistance.

  • Recently, the press and institute recognized fly ash as it had excellent performance. Its research and applications are on the rise largely as a substitute for cement. On the contrary, it is in a situation that the regulation of high fineness fly ash remains at a low level. As for the fly ash in $3,000{\sim}4,500\;cm^2/g$ class fineness regulated in KS L 5405, it is used by substituting it around the unit weight of cement 20%. Accordingly, the regulation in upper classification is in a situation of being insufficient. Therefore, this study aimed to establish 4000, 6000, and 8000 class of fineness of fly ash and three levels of substitute like 15%, 30%, and 45% in order to analyze the substitute and effect of water-binder ratio for fly ash that affected the properties of ternary system concrete. As a result of experiment by planning water-binder ratio for two levels like 40% and 50%, the more replacement ratio and fineness of fly ash increased in the performance not hardened, the more the fluidity increased. This study has found out that the air content decreased, and that there was setting acceleration and it decreased the heat of hydration. In addition, as for the strength properties in a state of performance hardened concrete, the more the replacement ratio and the ratio of water-binding materials increased, the more it had a tendency of being decreased.

  • Many researches on alternative materials as construction materials is continuing by recycling industrial byproducts due to shortage of sitereclamation and natural aggregates. In this paper, engineering properties in early-aged OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete are evaluated with EOS aggregate replacement. The related experiments were carried out with 0.6 of water to binder ratio, three levels of EOS replacement ratios (0%, 30% and 50%) for fine aggregate, and two levels of cement replacement with GGBFS (0% and 40%). Several tests such as slump air content, and unit mass measurement are performed for fresh concrete, and compressive strength and diffusion coefficient referred to NT BUILD 492 method are measured for hardened concrete. Through the tests, it was evaluated that the compressive strength in concrete with EOS aggregate increased to 3 days and 7 days but slightly decreased at the age of 28 days. In the accelerated chloride penetration test, GGBFS concrete showed reduced diffusion coefficients by 60 - 67% compared with OPC concrete. The lowest chloride diffusion coefficient was evaluated in the 50% replacement with EOS aggregate, which showed an applicability of EOS aggregate to concrete production.

  • Evaluation of chloride penetration is very important, because induced chloride ion causes corrosion in embedded steel. Diffusion coefficient obtained from rapid chloride penetration test is currently used, however this method cannot provide a correct prediction of chloride content since it shows only ion migration velocity in electrical field. Apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion based on simple Fick's Law can provide a total chloride penetration magnitude to engineers. This study proposes an analysis technique to predict chloride penetration using apparent diffusion coefficient of chloride ion from neural network (NN) algorithm and time-dependent diffusion phenomena. For this work, thirty mix proportions with the related diffusion coefficients are studied. The components of mix proportions such as w/b ratio, unit content of cement, slag, fly ash, silica fume, and fine/coarse aggregate are selected as neurons, then learning for apparent diffusion coefficient is trained. Considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient based on Fick's Law, the technique for chloride penetration analysis is proposed. The applicability of the technique is verified through test results from short, long term submerged test, and field investigations. The proposed technique can be improved through NN learning-training based on the acquisition of various mix proportions and the related diffusion coefficients of chloride ion.
