Background: The aim of the study was to determine whether the expression of baseline phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) levels were prognostic in terms of stage and overall survival (OS) in newly diagnosed non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. Materials and Methods: Retrospectively, 130 patients were selected at the time of diagnosis oflung cancer (100 with NSCLC and 30 with SCLC), before the initialization of any chemo-radiotherapy. The median age was 67 (range 29-92). IA, IB, IIA, IIB, IIIA, IIIB and IV stages were present in 3, 4, 19, 6, 25, 8, and 65 patients, respectively. After centrifugation, the levels of serum P and Mg were measured using the nephelometric method/ photometry and evaluated before any type of treatment. Results: Higher than normal levels of P were found in 127/130 patients, while only four patients had elevated Mg serum values. In terms of Spearman test, higher P serum values correlated with either stage (rho=- 0.334, p<0.001) or OS (rho=-0.212, p=0.016). Additionally, a significant negative correlation of Mg serum levels was found with stage of disease (rho=-0.135, P=0.042). On multivariate cox-regression survival analysis, only stage (p<0.01), performance status (p<0.01) and P serum (p=0.045) showed a significant prognostic value. Conclusions: Our study indicated that pre-treatment P serum levels in lung cancer patients are higher than the normal range. Moreover, P and Mg serum levels are predictive of stage of disease. Along with stage and performance status, the P serum levels had also a significant impact on survival. This information may be important for stratifying patients to specific treatment protocols or intensifying their therapies. However, larger series are now needed to confirm our results.
We have characterized the parametric and functional properties of live cell and cancer cell according to plasma treatment conditions using Atmospheric Pressure (AP) Plasma with uniquely designed low temperature arc-free unit. AP plasma system showed very highly efficient capabilities of reacting and interfacing directly with live and cancer cells. The parametric results with the types of gases, applied power, applied gap, and process times on cells will be presented in accordance with functional studies of the works. The growth of cancer cells is directly influenced by AP plasma exposure with evaluating plasma conditions in several human cancer cells and understanding how plasma exposure alters molecular signaling pathways. The cells exhibit a slower or faster growth rates compared with untreated cells, depending on the cell types. These results strongly support the conclusion that alterations in one or more of each gene are responsible, at least in part, for plasma-induced apoptosis in cancer cells. In addition, it also will be presented that AP plasma has an important role for the improvement of sensor performance due to excellent interface property between enzyme and metal electrode for bio sensor manufacturing process.
The present study focused on the segmented cell which has the similar performance to unaltered (not segmented) cell in real operating condition. Many literatures have been made the segmented cell to observe the behavior of local current density distribution in the single cell. However, it has been lack of scheme to segment the cell in that the detailed interpretation of segmenting in analytic point of view was insufficient. Hence, the basic idea of segmenting was introduced to determine the component to be segmented in anode side of unit cell. The electrical contact/bulk resistance was measured by using four wire/probe method through each part of cell components including MEA, GDL, Bipolar Plate and Current Collector. Electron transport mechanism was predicted by comparing resistance values which were obtained from the experiment. As a result, this offered a great benefit to segment the cell efficiently. With this method further experiments would be conducted in research areas which require current density distribution at the same operating condition as unaltered cell.
Because of the low temperature operation, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell has a water phase transition. Therefore, water management is an important operation issue in a PEM fuel cell because the liquid water in the fuel cell causes electrode flooding that can lower the cell performance under high current density conditions. In this study, in order to understand the reactant distributions in the cathode channels of the PEM fuel cell, an experimental technique that can measure the species concentrations of reactant gases by using gas chromatograph (GC) is applied for an operating PEM fuel cell. The oxygen distribution along the cathode flow channels of PEM fuel cell is mainly investigated with various operating conditions. Also, the relations between cathode flooding and oxygen concentrations and oxygen consumption pattern along the cathode channel configurations of the unit cell adopted for this study are discussed using GC measurement and visualization experiment of cathode flooding. It is found that the amount of oxygen consumption is very sensitive to various operating conditions of the fuel cell and was much affected by the flooding occurrence in cathode channels.
The comparisons between measured performance of lab-scale PEMFC and calculation were conducted to understand the detail phenomena of PEMFC for the various inlet oxygen humidity of cathode side. Experiments were performed at $65^{\circ}C$ operation temperature and different inlet humidity conditions such as 40%, 60% and 80%. We used the MEA manufactured by oneself which include $Nafion^{(R)}$ 112 membrane, Nafion solution 20%, and carbon paper(E-TEK). As a result of this experiment, cell performance was getting higher by increasing inlet humidity condition at cathode side because ion conductivity of electrolyte membrane is increased. A 3D CFD simulation model of PEMFC was developed using commercially available CFD code that is one of the STAR-CD module, es-pemfc under same operating conditions. Model calculations results were compared with experimental ones on the polarization curves and calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental ones. Local water distribution and current density inside PEMFC are discussed in detail.
Single-chamber solid oxide fuel cells (SC-SOFCs) consist of only one gas chamber, in which both the anode and the cathode are exposed to the same fuel-oxidant mixture. Thus, this configuration shows good thermal and mechanical resistance and allows rapid start-up and -down. In this study, the unit cell consisting of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3$ (cathode) / $Zr_{0.84}Y_{0.16}O_{2-x}$ (electrolyte) / $Ni-Zr_{0.84}Y_{0.16}O_{2-x}$ (anode) was fabricated and its electrochemical property was investigated as a function of temperature and the volume ratio of fuel and oxidant for SC-SOFCs. Impedance spectra were also investigated in order to figure out the electrical characteristics of the cell. As a result, the cell performance was governed by the polarization resistances of the electrodes. The cell exhibited an acceptable cell-performance of $86mW/cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ and stable performance for 3 hs under 0.7 V.
