In Total Water Pollutant Load Management System of Korea, unit load approach based on land register data is currently used for the estimation of non-point pollutant load. However, a problem raised that land register data could not always reflect the actual land surface coverages which determine runoff characteristics of non-point pollution sources. As a way to overcome this, we tried to establish quantitative relationships between the aerial images (0.4m resolution) which reflect actual land surface coverages and the land registration maps according to the 19 major designated land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed. Analyses showed different relationships according to the land-use categories. Only a few land-use categories including forestry, road and river showed essentially identical and some categories such as orchard, parking lot and sport utility site showed no relationships at all between image data and land register data. Except for the two cases, all the other categories showed statistically significant linear relationships between image data and land register data. The analyses indicate that using high resolution aerial maps is a better way to estimate non-point pollutant load. If the aerial maps are not available, application of the linear relationships as conversion factors of land register data to image data could be an possible option to estimate non-point pollutant loads for the specific land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed.

The parking brake is an essential unit embedded in the track-driving motor of an excavator. The parking brake plays an important role in keeping the excavator in place not only when it is parked, but also during the digging operation. In fact, the load placed on the parking brake during the digging operation is significantly higher than the parking load, because the impact and rating loads caused by the bucket digging force cycle frequently and have very high load ranges. Therefore, the load conditions during the digging operation should be taken into account in the parking brake certification test. In this study, a series of experiments was carried out in which various operating pressures were applied to the parking brake, where repeated loads were reciprocally placed on the brake by locking the multifriction disc and releasing the hydraulic cylinder. The characteristics of the parking brake were investigated by comparing the obtained experimental results and the theoretical design specifications.
PURPOSE. The aims of this pilot study were to introduce implant loading devices designed for animal study and to evaluate the validity of the load transmission ability of the loading devices. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Implant loading devices were specially designed and fabricated with two implant abutments and cast metal bars, and orthodontic expansion screw. In six Beagles, all premolars were extracted and two implants were placed in each side of the mandibles. The loading device was inserted two weeks after the implant placement. According to the loading protocol, the load was applied to the implants with different time and method, simulating early, progressive, and delayed loading. The implants were clinically evaluated and the loading devices were removed and replaced to the master cast, followed by stress-strain analysis. Descriptive statistics of remained strain (${\mu}{\varepsilon}$) was evaluated after repeating three cycles of the loading device activation. Statistic analysis was performed using nonparametric, independent t-test with 5% significance level and Friedman's test was also used for verification. RESULTS. The loading devices were in good action. However, four implants in three Beagles showed loss of osseointegration. In stress-strain analysis, loading devices showed similar amount of increase in the remained strain after applying 1-unit load for three times. CONCLUSION. Specialized design of the implant loading device was introduced. The loading device applied similar amount of loads near the implant after each 1-unit loading. However, the direction of the loads was not parallel to the long axis of the implants as predicted before the study.
Moving train load parameters, including train speed, axle spacing, gross train weight and axle weights, are identified based on strain-monitoring data. In this paper, according to influence line theory, the classic moving force identification method is enhanced to handle time-varying velocity of the train. First, the moments that the axles move through a set of fixed points are identified from a series of pulses extracted from the second derivative of the structural strain response. Subsequently, the train speed and axle spacing are identified. In addition, based on the fact that the integral area of the structural strain response is a constant under a unit force at a unit speed, the gross train weight can be obtained from the integral area of the measured strain response. Meanwhile, the corrected second derivative peak values, in which the effect of time-varying velocity is eliminated, are selected to distribute the gross train weight. Hence the axle weights could be identified. Afterwards, numerical simulations are employed to verify the proposed method and investigate the effect of the sampling frequency on the identification accuracy. Eventually, the method is verified using the real-time strain data of a continuous steel truss railway bridge. Results show that train speed, axle spacing and gross train weight can be accurately identified in the time domain. However, only the approximate values of the axle weights could be obtained with the updated method. The identified results can provide reliable reference for determining fatigue deterioration and predicting the remaining service life of railway bridges.

Rock-socketed drilled shafts are widely used to transfer the heavy loads from the superstructure especially in mountainous area. Extensive research has been done on the behavior of rock-socketed drilled shafts under compressive load. However, little attention has been paid to uplift behavior of drilled shaft in rock, which govern the overall behavior of the foundation system. In this paper, a series of centrifuge tests have been performed to investigate the uplift response of rock-socketed drilled shafts. The pull-out tests of drilled shafts installed in layered rocks having various strengths were conducted. The load-displacement response, axial load distributions in the shaft and the unit skin friction distribution under pull-out loads were investigated. The effects of the strength of rock socket on the initial stiffness, ultimate capacity and mobilization of friction of the foundation, were also examined. The results indicated that characteristics of rock-socket has a significant influence on the uplift behavior of drilled shaft. Most of the applied uplift load were carried by socketed rock when the drilled shaft was installed in the sand over rock layer, whereas substantial load was carried by both upper and lower rock layers when the drilled shaft was completely socketed into layered rock. The pattern of mobilized shaft friction and point where the maximum unit shaft friction occurred were also found to be affected by the socket condition surrounding the drilled shaft.
This paper represents a new method for computing reliability indices by using Large Deviation method which is one of the probabilistic production cost simulations. The reliability measures are based on the models used for the loads and for the generating unit failure states. In computing these measures it has been tacitly assumed that the values of all parameters in the models are precisely known. In fact, however, some of these values must often be chosen with a considerable degree of uncertainty involved. This is particularly true for the forecast peak loads in the load model, where there is an inherent uncertainty in the method of forecasting, which are frequently based on insufficient statistics. In this paper, the effect of load forecasting uncertainty on the LOLP(Loss of Load Probability), is investigated. By applying the Large Deviation method to the IEEE Rilability Test System, it is verified that the proposed method is generally very accurate and very fast for computing system reliability indices.
NiTiCu alloys can produce a large force per unit volume and operate with a simple mechanism. For this reasons, it has been widely studied for application as a micro actuator. So in this study, one-way and two way shape memory effects of Ti-42.5at%Ni-2.0at%Cu alloys are studied. In the case of one-way shape memory effects, shape memory recoverable stress and strain of this alloys were measured by means of tension and compression tests under constant temperature. The strains by tension and compression stress were perfectly recovered by heating at any testing conditions also shape memory recoverable stress increased to 116 MPa in tension tests and to 260 MPa in compression tests. In the case of two-way shape memory effects, transformation temperatures from thermal cycling under constant uniaxial applied tension and compression loads linearly increased by increasing external loads and their maximum recoverable strain is 3.8% at 100MPa tensile condition and 2.2% at 125 MPa compression condition.
In thrust bearings, the thrust collar and bearing surface need to be parallel to each other to ensure that all pads share the same load. In rotating machines, the shaft system cannot achieve perfect alignment. Misalignment of the thrust collar results in some pads supporting a higher load than others and excessive loads being placed on some pads. Consequently, high loads and high temperatures may occur in the bearing. Thus, in this study, we aim to analytically evaluate the performance of a misaligned non-equalizing direct lubricated tilting pad thrust bearing. We define the oil film thickness of the misaligned thrust bearing using the Byrant angle. Additionally, we calculate the pressure distribution and temperature distribution of the thrust bearing using the generalized Reynolds equation and energy equation. The design limit of the thrust bearing is defined by the load and temperature. Therefore, we evaluate the allowable misalignment angle as the limit of the maximum load and temperature. The analysis results demonstrate that an increase in the speed and load corresponds to a smaller allowable misalignment angle. However, as this is not the same for all thrust bearings, evaluating the allowable misalignment angle at each thrust bearing is essential.
In this study, two large pile load tests were performed in the deep sand gravel deposit of Nakdong river basin so that the characteristics of the load transfer was identified. The fully instrumented rectangular barrette pile in the size of $1.5\times3.0m$ and the circular bored pile of the diameter 1.5 m were placed into the ground below 50 m. Under the applied loads of 2,400 tonf and 4,000 tonf, the test results of the load transfer showed the portion of 83% and 93% of the applied loads on the barrette pile and the bored pile, respectively, were supported by the skin friction along the pile shaft. It was revealed that the most of these skin friction mobilized in sand layer underlying clay layer having N-value more than 30 and that the friction per unit area of the bored pile was larger than the friction of barrette pile. However, if embedded in the stiff sand graval layer, the both piles were proven to be sufficient for using as the friction piles.

In this paper, we propose to a method to estimate the elasto-plastic buckling for single layer latticed domes. First, we assume that each member consists of the rigid zone and elastic spring at both end joint, the elastic element and three elasto-plastic spring to judge for yeilding the member. Next, the member which has most influence on buckling for structures is determined by a distributed pattern of the strain energy which is calculated through linear eigenvalue analysis. And then, normalized slenderness ratio of the element is derived considering the axial force at elastic buckling load. Later, we execute elasto-plastic nonlinear analysis that based on loading increasement method and displacement increasement method. From this results, we discusses the effect of the joint rigidity and the half open angle $\theta$$_{0}$ on the buckling strength of single layer lattice domes ; (1) how the joint rigidity contributes to the reduction of buckling loads, (2) how the reduction can be interrelated to compressive strength curves in terms of the generalized slenderness for the member most relevant to the overall buckling of domes.s.
